A key Pixel Watch 3 tool will finally arrive six months late in the U.S.
The FDA has signaled approval for the Loss of Pulse Detection feature on the Pixel Watch 3.
It detects if the user is experiencing "primary cardiac arrest" or "respiratory or circulatory failure."
Loss of Pulse Detection was previously available in 14 European countries, but will not arrive in the U.S. until late March 2025.
A key draw to the Pixel Watch 3 is its Fitbit-branded health sensors for detecting heart issues. On Wednesday, Google announced that the FDA has given clearance for Loss of Pulse Detection to be used on its smartwatch in the United States, signaling that the feature is accurate enough to be trusted on a consumer device.
As the name implies, Loss of Pulse Detection can "detect when you've experienced a loss of pulse." It will then vibrate with a check-in message before starting an alarm to alert people nearby; if you continue to be unresponsive, it will attempt to call 911 and send an automated message with your location to the emergency responder.
Google heavily advertised this feature when launching the Pixel Watch 3 in September, but while it arrived quickly in 14 countries in the EU and United Kingdom, Google had to get regulatory approval before launching it in the United States. Since this isn't an active feature, many American Watch 3 buyers may have assumed it was available.
Thankfully, Google announced that "we'll begin rolling it out in the U.S. at the end of March," so we won't have too much longer to wait. This feature won't be available on older Pixel Watch models, however.
The Pixel Watch 3 sells in 32 countries, meaning a majority of them still don't have Loss of Pulse Detection. The current list is Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; Google claims that "additional countries will be added as regulatory clearance is obtained."
While this feature only becomes necessary in drastic circumstances, the Pixel Watch 3 also has more preventative heart health tools. It has an ECG to detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) during active checks, as well as automatic irregular heart rhythm notifications to catch warning signs throughout the day.
Plus, the Watch 3 can detect if the user experiences a sudden fall or a car crash, with a similar method of calling emergency services if the wearer cannot respond to prompts.
Among Android smartwatches, the Pixel Watch 3 is one of the most accurate when it comes to heart rate data, both generally and during workouts, so we're happy to have this feature arriving for worst-case scenarios. And we're curious what new health features will come to the Pixel Watch 4.

ProKidney Reports Statistically and Clinically Significant Topline Results for the Phase 2 REGEN-007 Trial Evaluating Rilparencel in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetes

Rilparencel is an autologous cellular therapy that has received Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and is currently being evaluated in the ongoing Phase 3 REGEN-006 (PROACT 1) trial to demonstrate the therapy's potential to preserve kidney function in patients with advanced CKD and type 2 diabetes. Phase 2 REGEN-007 Overview and Topline ResultsREGEN-007 is a multi-center Phase 2 open-label 1:1 randomized two-arm trial in patients with diabetes, CKD, and an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 20-50 mL/min/1.73m². At randomization, patients were assigned to one of two treatment groups using different dosing regimens. Group 1 replicated the dosing schedule of the ongoing Phase 3 PROACT 1 study in which patients received two scheduled rilparencel injections (one in each kidney), approximately three months apart. Group 2 tested an exploratory dosing regimen to investigate whether disease progression triggers, rather than a time-based trigger, could optimize multiple administrations of rilparencel. In Group 2, patients received a single rilparencel injection in one kidney and a second injection in the contralateral kidney only if triggered by a sustained eGFR decline from baseline of ≥ 20%, and/or an increase in the urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) from baseline of ≥ 30% and ≥ 30 mg/g. The prespecified primary endpoint for REGEN-007 is the difference in annual eGFR slope (calculated using a linear mixed effects model) in the pre-injection period versus the period following the last rilparencel injection. The pre-injection period included all historical eGFR values collected up to 24 months before the screening visit as well as the on-study central laboratory eGFR results prior to first rilparencel injection. The period following the last injection included eGFR values from the last rilparencel injection to the end of study (EOS) visit. Median follow-up after the last injection was approximately 18 months in both Group 1 and Group 2. Fifty-three patients were randomized in the study, of whom 49 patients (mITT population) received at least one rilparencel injection. Four patients did not receive any rilparencel injections. The majority of patients were male (69%), and the mean age was 60 years. At baseline, 38 of 49 patients (78%) had type 2 diabetes mellitus and 11 (22%) had type 1 diabetes. Thirty-nine (80%) patients were receiving an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) or an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and 18 (37%) were receiving a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT2i). At baseline, the mean (SD) eGFR was 33±10 mL/min/1.73m2. Notably, the median UACR was higher in Group 1 (792 mg/g) compared to Group 2 (229 mg/g). As a reminder, the Phase 3 PROACT 1 protocol was amended in 1H 2024 after a similar eGFR efficacy signal was observed in the Phase 2 RMCL-002 study subgroup analysis (n=23) of high-UACR, Stage 4 CKD patients with type 2 diabetes. In Group 2 (n=25), the annual change in kidney function as measured by eGFR slope was -3.4 mL/min/1.73m2 in the pre-injection period versus -1.7 mL/min/1.73m2 in the period following the last rilparencel injection, resulting in an improvement of 50%, or 1.7 mL/min/1.73m2 per year. This difference was not statistically significant (p=0.085) but suggests evidence of a dose response. Out of the 25 patients in Group 2, 15 (60%) met the re-dosing trigger and received a second rilparencel injection. The median time between the first and second injections in these 15 patients was approximately 11 months. No rilparencel-related serious adverse events were observed across all patients in the study who received at least one rilparencel injection (n=49). The safety profile was consistent with previously reported study results and comparable to a kidney biopsy. Full results from REGEN-007 are being held and will be submitted to the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) 2025 Kidney Week as a late-breaking clinical trial. Phase 3 PROACT 1 Regulatory ProgressAs previously communicated, the FDA confirmed during a Type B meeting in Q4 2024 that the accelerated approval pathway is available for rilparencel if an acceptable surrogate endpoint, such as eGFR slope, is used. ProKidney has an upcoming FDA Type B meeting this summer to confirm the approach to using eGFR slope as the surrogate endpoint for accelerated approval. Additional details are expected in mid-2025. About Chronic Kidney DiseaseCKD is a progressive condition characterized by the gradual decline of kidney function, which can ultimately lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) requiring dialysis or transplantation. Google releases July's Pixel software update with bad news for the Pixel 6a

Along with the security patch, this update starts the Pixel 6a's Battery Performance Program. It's July and a new software update is waiting for your Pixel phone. This month's update, unfortunately, comes with some bad news if you own a Pixel 6a. Google has announced that it is rolling out the monthly software update for July, along with the July security patch. This update features the build number BP2A.250705.008 and is available for the Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a. Interestingly, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were left off the list. Another notable tidbit is that the security bulletin mentions there are 'no Android security patches' in this month's update. Google later confirmed that it intends to issue 'a mandatory automatic software update to Android 16' in a Battery Performance Program support page for the Pixel 6a. Today's update happens to be the start of that rollout. Although this is the beginning of the Pixel 6a's Battery Performance Program, not all owners will see changes to their battery life. Google says 'only Impacted Devices will receive the battery management features.' Women past menopause with a higher body mass index were more likely to develop breast cancer if they had heart disease, researchers reported Monday in the journal Cancer. BMI is an estimate of body fat based on height and weight. Women with heart disease had a 31% increased risk of breast cancer for every 5-point increase in their BMI, results show. By comparison, women without heart problems had a 13% increased risk for every 5-point BMI increase, results show. "This suggests that among postmenopausal women with cardiovascular disease, prevention of obesity may lead to a greater reduction in breast cancer incidence compared to the general population," concluded the research team led by Heinz Freisling, a scientist of nutrition and metabolism with the International Agency for Research on Cancer. For the study, researchers pooled data from two large-scale European health studies - the ongoing UK Biobank research project and the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition. They wound up with data on nearly 169,000 postmenopausal women, including almost 6,800 who developed breast cancer after an average follow-up of nearly 11 years. Researchers estimate that the combination of excess weight and heart disease could cause an additional 153 cases of breast cancer per 100,000. On the other hand, developing type 2 diabetes did not seem to affect women's breast cancer risk, researchers found. "Emerging experimental research suggests that certain types of cardiovascular disease -- such as myocardial infarction [heart attack] -- can accelerate breast cancer growth by reprogramming of the innate immune system," researchers wrote. Proteins secreted after heart failure have been shown to promote tumor formation and accelerate cancer growth, researchers said. "The findings of this study could be used to inform risk-stratified breast cancer screening programs," Freisling said. "This study should also inspire future research to include women with a history of cardiovascular diseases in weight loss trials for breast cancer prevention."
