KUALA LUMPUR: Beloved animated character Ejen Ali delighted fans with a surprise appearance during KL Car Free Day this morning, drawing an enthusiastic crowd in what turned out to be a cleverly executed social media stunt.
The unexpected sight of the Ejen Ali mascot strolling through the city streets quickly became the highlight of the event, with people of all ages rushing to snap photos and interact with the character.
Excitement filled the air as fans warmly welcomed the iconic figure, many expressing eager anticipation for the highly awaited sequel, Ejen Ali The Movie 2, which is set to hit cinemas on May 22.
Primeworks Studios and Media Prima Television Networks (MPTN), the creative forces behind the franchise, said the overwhelmingly positive response — both on the ground and across social media — had significantly boosted momentum in the lead-up to the film's release.
"The crowd's reaction was incredible... the content generated strong engagement online and even gave the impression that the event was entirely organised by us, which ultimately benefits the film's promotional efforts," the studios said in a statement.
The original Ejen Ali film attracted over 2.5 million viewers nationwide, and its creators are hopeful that the sequel will exceed this impressive milestone.
Carrying the tagline "Aksi Animasi Mempesona, Meledakkan Emosi", the sequel promises an emotionally charged cinematic experience packed with action.
More promotional activities involving fans are in the pipeline, with updates to be shared via the social media channels of Primeworks Studios, TV3 Malaysia, and Ejen Ali.

Claims abound of animated high-flyer Upin & Ipin 'trapped in toxic workplace culture, comfort zone'

IT could not have come at a worse time. With the launch of the Upin & Ipin Universe Game set to be launched in just over a week (July 17), gaming forums are abuzz with news that retrenched staff of Streamline Studios (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd – the videogame development outfit – have not received their dues. Likewise, with the second instalment of Ejen Ali breaking all sorts of box office record at home and abroad, one would have expected a pioneer in the local animation scene to be also generating plenty of pleasant headlines. After all, that was what the Upin & Ipin Universe Game is supposed to do – a game changer. Instead, the creators of Upin & Ipin c hildren's animated television series – Les' Copaque Production Sdn Bhd – has been described as a toxic workplace with a management that was aloof. This was presumably Upin & Ipin fan rei🍉 (rest)'s (@peulreiii) reaction on X to another post highlighting the Streamline Media woes. Les Copaque is also a VERY problematic company. Toxic workplace with their higher ups mostly hidung tinggi gila. Shit talks other local animations and even as far as threatening their employees if they speak highly of another. — rei🍉 (rest) (@peulreiiii) July 6, 2025 Editor's Note: Les' Copaque partnered with American online game developer, Streamline Studios in 2023 to create a console game based on the Upin & Ipin franchise, ie the Upin & Ipin Universe . The crux of the matter is that gaming forums are abuzz with news of the disgruntlement among Streamline Studios' ex-employees which soon rub on Les' Copaque. That the post by rei🍉 (rest) has generated over 301.7K views at the time of writing is itself an indication that enough eyeballs are reading about alleged wrongdoings being perpetrated on employees of Les' Copaque. As one commenter rightly pointed out, the franchise was seemingly static while Ejen Ali: The Movie 2 (a film by Primeworks Studios and Wau Animation based on an animation series of the same name) was conquering new frontiers. That sentiment was echoed in another comment which observed that the brand did not forge ahead to do better content but has instead stagnated within its comfort zone. Concern is raised that it could soon be overtaken by rivals. This comment though ignores the fact that the game itself is meant to up the ante significantly. This toxic work culture was cited by one commenter as a reason for the dip in quality in Upin & Ipin . While both Les' Copaque and Streamline Studios may not be all-conquering as Ejen Ali 2 or even Mechamoto , it would do well to avoid such negative publicity on social media. The consequence is a very negative perception about the organisations and which will ultimately hurt the product it is trying to sell. The Upin & Ipin Universe Game is set to be officially launched on July 17. With the big date just days away, it could very well do with such negative publicity. – July 17, 2025 Main image credit: #ZHAFVLOG (@zhafvlog)/X

Ejen Ali 2: Hit movie scores big in Indonesia as versatile actor Azman Zulkiply continues to shine as voice actor

Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2), the highly anticipated sequel to Malaysia's hit animated feature, is enjoying a strong run in Indonesia, with its theatrical release now extended to 240 cinemas, more than triple the number when it premiered on June 27. In just five days, the film has attracted over 174,000 moviegoers of all ages, especially children, marking a significant milestone for the homegrown animation in a competitive entertainment market. WAU Animation chief executive officer and EATM2 director Usamah Zaid Yasin said the team had not expected such an overwhelming reception, particularly as Indonesia does not operate a 'mandatory screening' system like Malaysia. "We entered the market at the perfect time during the school holidays, backed by strong local partnerships, distributors and a communications agency that truly understands the Indonesian audience,' he told Bernama. Usamah attributed the film's early momentum to the loyal Ejen Ali digital fanbase in Indonesia, cultivated over the years through YouTube and social media, alongside strategic collaborations with Indonesian animation studios and a soundtrack feature with popular local band Nidji. He said these localisation efforts gave the film a familiar touch and a sense of ownership for Indonesian viewers, and he expects viewership to continue rising in the coming weeks. With momentum building, EATM2 is expected to debut in Cambodia, following recent successful runs in Singapore and Brunei, cementing its growing regional footprint. In another development, there is no doubt that Rizwan's character in Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2) is one of the characters that most captured the audience's attention, not only because of his solid fighting skills, but also because of his cool appearance and gruff voice. Behind this character stands the figure of a very experienced and versatile actor, Azman Zulkiply. Interestingly, Rizwan is not the only character voiced by Azman in EATM2. He also plays the roles of General Rama and Viktor, each representing three different racial backgrounds, namely Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Of course, it is not easy to bring a character to life with different speaking styles and accents, but Azman said he loved the experience. "This is my proudest achievement in my career. (EATM2) What a ride, the opportunity to play three characters was an amazing experience," said Azman in a special interview. "I have many friends. Malays, Chinese and Indians, they are amazing people. That is why this country is so great. It is my utmost honour that I could voice over for all three characters. "I thank the EATM 2 team for giving me this opportunity, it is something I will never forget," added Azman. Even more impressive is that Azman has been voicing these three characters for almost a decade, spanning more than half of his career in voice acting, and it also makes it easier for him to delve deeply into each character and give each one a unique touch. "Being involved here is one of the happiest moments of my career. I'm so glad EATM 2 is also doing so well in many countries besides Malaysia. The support is wonderful and I hope we keep on going for more," Said Azman. For the record, EATM 2 is produced by WAU Animation in collaboration with Primeworks Studios (PWS). The film, which follows the story of a 12-year-old boy who accidentally becomes a spy, has grossed nearly RM60 million to date, with more regional releases in the pipeline.
