It's a joke – Enzo Maresca unhappy at long delay in Chelsea-Benfica tie
The tie took almost five hours to complete after the teams were forced inside, with the Blues 1-0 up with four minutes remaining thanks to Reece James' free-kick, due to 'the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium'.
On the resumption, Angel Di Maria equalised with a controversial stoppage-time penalty to take the game to extra time, only for Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to seal Chelsea's win.

Maresca, in his press conference, said of the long delay: 'I think it's a joke, to be honest.
'It's not football, it's completely something new, I struggle to understand.
'I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition.
'It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero.
'We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games, there is some problems for me personally.

'I'm talking as a manager because when you're two hours inside and you have to try to keep them (the players) in the game, they're speaking to their families outside for safety reasons, they're eating, they're playing, they're laughing, how can you keep them inside focused for two hours? It's a joke.'
One of Maresca's players at least was able to make light of the delay, which saw the game finish at 1.40am UK time, with defender Trevoh Chalobah posting on social media: 'Game started Saturday and ended Sunday'.
Players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break and Maresca told broadcaster DAZN: 'Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult.

'But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy.'
Gianluca Prestianni saw red for Bruno Lage's men in extra time for a second yellow card as Chelsea booked their place against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals.
The Blues could now come up against Palmeiras' Stamford Bridge-bound Estevao Willian, whose side defeated fellow Brazilian club Botafogo on Saturday.

But a cross-party group of MSPs on the Scottish Parliament's Constitution, Europe, External Affairs and Culture Committee wants to see free coverage of the national team enshrined in law, and expanded to include Euro qualifiers. It has asked for the UK Government's position on categorising Scotland men's and women's national team games under Group A events, which requires full coverage to be offered to free-to-air broadcasters - like the World Cup finals, European Championships, Olympic Games, and Wimbledon. Fans' groups have rallied behind the proposals and called for more free-to-view fixtures. Andy Smith, chair of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, said: 'It's great if they're serious and are going to do something about it. 'We've been campaigning on this for two years. Scotland games should be free on TV and we found that there's nobody who disagrees. 'More kids and young people would like to watch Scotland. It's short-term thinking to try and squeeze money out of TV companies. 'The reason it might not happen is money but this could be great for the long-term success of the game. They're better off broadcasting it for the nation, instead of short-term TV deals. 'It's good that politicians are touching base with what the people want. Our position is that all Scottish football and rugby games should be free to view.' Hamish Husband, of the Association of Tartan Army Clubs, added: 'In an ideal world, all Scotland qualifying games would be free. This would be good news for fans of Scotland's men's and women's teams. In a letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy MP, SNP MSP Clare Adamson wrote: 'The Committee invites you to set out the current UK Government's position on potentially including expanding the specific Scottish events covered under the listed events regime, to include in Group A, not just the Scottish FA Cup final but also Scotland's World Cup and European Championship qualifiers.' The cross-party body also requested the views of SFA chief executive, Ian Maxwell, and the Scottish Government's Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture, Angus Robertson MSP. In the UK, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport is in charge of the Group A list - dubbed "crown jewel" sporting events. These events are considered to be of national interest and are subject to specific broadcasting regulations to ensure wide availability. Steve Clarke's men will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Denmark on September 5. A Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'The Scottish Government has long called for national sporting events like Scotland's men's and women's football qualifiers to be protected for free-to-air broadcast and we'll continue to make that case on behalf of fans across the country. "It is welcome news that all of Scotland men's international football matches will be broadcast live on the BBC in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup. 'We will consider the Committee's recommendations and respond in due course.' An SFA spokesperson said: 'Since 2014, television rights for men's international qualifying matches [European Qualifiers and Nations League] have been centralised by UEFA. "This has enabled the Scottish FA to support growth in all aspects of the game: from grassroots level, girls' and women's participation, investment in facilities, and improved provision across all men's and women's national teams. "We are in favour of ensuring as many supporters as possible can watch all national teams and, in that regard, we welcome BBC Scotland's recent acquisition of rights from UEFA. "Any discussion on extending Listed Events would need to consider UEFA's jurisdiction as well as the implications for other Home Nations under the centralisation umbrella. "The commercial implications to Scottish football would be significant, with potential revenue loss amounting to millions of pounds that would in turn significantly reduce investment in the aforementioned areas of the association's responsibility." A UK Government spokesperson said it has no current plans to review listed events but that it supports widespread accessibility of sport. They added that it is for the Scottish Government to evaluate whether there is a right balance between generating income for reinvesting in Scottish sport and providing access for audiences across the country.

Former Chelsea wonderkid confirms retirement from football at just 28
Charly Musonda, once predicted to be a future superstar for Chelsea and Belgium, has retired from football at just 28 years old. The winger joined the Chelsea academy from Anderlecht in 2012 and big things were expected of him, starring in the Blues youth sides that racked up silverware at the time. However, he only ever made seven first team appearances for the Blues, spending time away from the club on loan at Real Betis, Celtic and Vitesse. Injuries badly hampered the Belgian and he eventually left Chelsea permanently in 2022 for Spanish side Levante, then moved to Cypriot outfit Anorthis a year later. I have been thinking about it for the last couple of years,' Musonda told Rising Ballers. 'Purely because of my own experiences and who I am as a person. 'I want to be doing things with purpose. I want to inspire and motivate people. I want to create opportunities. I am starting something new that will hopefully help players. 'Today, I have made a decision. It is a decision I have been wrestling with for a long time, but I am going to retire from professional football. It is not an easy decision, but I am building up towards the next stage now. 'I will still be involved in football. In roles to help players express themselves and giving them an opportunity to showcase how good they are. 'I'm still young but I want to help players who don't have the chance to showcase their talent. 'I know how it feels and with football changing so much, many players never get the opportunity to show what they can do, I want to make a difference.' Musonda's worst injury was picked up while on loan at Vitesse, suffering a knee problem which left doctors predicting he would never play again. He did make a return to the pitch and played for Chelsea's Under-23 side as he built back his fitness, but left Stamford Bridge when his contract ended in 2022, something which he says damaged him badly. 'The exit killed me. It killed me mentally. It was the worst thing,' he said. 'I was obviously with the reserves at that time so the plan was to pick up with the reserves, get some training in and if there were a few games where I could fit in toward the back end of the season, that was the plan. 'Because I literally had just gotten better. I came back in December-January and was training with the reserves. Feeling amazing, happy to be back—obviously it was a long way for me to be fully fit, but just being able to train was amazing. 'The first team was doing really well. It was COVID, so the buildings were split and you wouldn't really see the first team. More Trending 'Then toward the back end of the season in the car park I ran into Thomas Tuchel, the manager. 'They were getting ready for the semi-final of the Champions League and he just said, 'How are you feeling? How are things going?' 'It was my first time meeting him. He said, 'I'm looking forward to seeing you back' and I said, 'Don't worry, I'll be back for pre-season.' 'Because in my mind, it was always pre-season and I'd be back with the first team and we'd see from there. So I came back for pre-season and that's where things got tricky. That was the end of my time at Chelsea.'
