Ludhiana Municipal Corporation to launch 100 electric vehicle charging stations for sustainable urban transport

Time of India2 days ago
In a major step towards
sustainable urban transport
, the
Ludhiana Municipal Corporation
(MC) plans to establish 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city. With over 60,000 EVs already on the roads, the move aims at addressing the growing demand for accessible charging infrastructure.
Under the project, which is to be executed under a
Public-Private Partnership
(PPP) model, a private firm will be hired to install and operate the charging stations, while the MC will provide land for the installations. In return, the firm will share a fixed portion of its revenue with the civic body.
Before installation begins, the selected company will conduct a survey of major roads to identify suitable locations for the stations. A detailed list will be compiled to determine whether the land falls under the jurisdiction of the MC or whether it belongs to other departments. For locations outside city limits, land under
Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority
(Glada) will be considered.
MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal confirmed the development, stating, "We will soon float the Request for Proposal (RFP) to initiate the project. Having more EVs on the road will reduce pollution, making this a timely and necessary move."
The initiative comes at a time when rising fuel prices are pushing residents toward
electric mobility
. The popularity of
electric two-wheelers
and e-rickshaws is surging, and the city is also set to receive electric buses under the central government's
PM E-Bus Sewa scheme
. These developments further highlight the need for a robust charging network.
Currently, Ludhiana lacks sufficient mid-route charging options, which has been a concern for EV users. The proposed stations will not only support existing vehicles but also encourage more residents to make the switch to cleaner transport.
Once approved by the Finance and Contracts Committee, the RFP will be floated, and the groundwork for Ludhiana's
green mobility
future will begin.

RSRTC floats tender for third time to buy electric buses

Jaipur: The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) has issued a tender for the third time to procure electric vehicle buses. The corporation plans to acquire 300 electric buses which are to be deployed on routes within the National Capital Region (NCR). Officials said that electric buses will be taken on contract, and bus operators will be paid up to Rs 60 per km. Before this, tenders were invited in Dec 2024 and May 2025. Officials added that the tender for 300 buses is two-fold: one with the infrastructure for charging the buses and the second without charging infrastructure. The corporation aims to procure a total of 900 EVs, which will replace the existing diesel-based fleet used for these routes. For the initial 300 buses, RSRTC has floated the tender, said officials. "Due to the two-fold nature of the tender, we have not received bids as expected till now. The tender has been floated for the 300 EVs that were announced in the state budget. By next month, we'll be able to understand what the response of the bidders is," said a senior official. Officials said that by June 2026, RSRTC will replace all its 900 buses currently plying on the Delhi-NCR routes with EV buses complying with the guidelines of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cách giao dịch ETH/USD mà không cần nắm giữ Ether IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The corporation is also working on procuring 600 EV buses as part of a central govt scheme, PM E-Drive, for which the state govt has also given the sovereign guarantee, said officials. "The PM E-Drive, which is the scheme of the Department of Heavy Industries, is primarily for intra-city operations, but we have requested the central govt to allow us to procure buses under this scheme due to the requirements, explaining our situation," said Shubhra Singh, RSRTC chairperson.

Karnataka transport minister urges Centre to provide direct subsidy to states for electric buses

MANGALURU: Karnataka Transport Minister B. Ramalinga Reddy has called on the central government to directly provide subsidies to state governments for procuring electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, instead of routing them to private operators through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Speaking at the inauguration of the automated driving test track at Pajir near Mangaluru on Sunday, Reddy said the procurement and operation of electric buses was much smoother during the UPA regime. 'At that time, electric buses cost around Rs 20 lakh. The central government provided 50% of the funding, while the state government and transport corporations each contributed 25%. This model worked efficiently for state-run services like BMTC, NWKRTC, and NEKRTC,' he said. Under the current NDA government, however, Reddy pointed out that subsidies are granted directly to private companies through a bidding process. 'These private operators own the buses, hire drivers, and manage maintenance, while state corporations only provide conductors and pay the operator on a per-kilometre basis,' he added. He urged the Centre to revert to a model where subsidies go directly to state transport corporations. 'This would ensure better accountability, especially when drivers are employed directly by the state,' he said. Reddy also highlighted the steep rise in electric bus costs—now around Rs 2 crore—and appealed to the Centre to offer GST input credits to manufacturers. 'This will bring down manufacturing costs, making buses more affordable for states and beneficial for passengers,' he said. He further recommended that operators be allowed to charge electric buses at any facility, not just at government-run charging stations. 'Private stations offer power at Rs 3–Rs 4 per unit, compared to Rs 8 at government facilities,' Reddy noted.
