Black box of crashed AI plane is in India, being examined by AAIB: Minister

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Tuesday said the black box of the Air India plane which crashed in Ahmedabad earlier this month was being examined by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, and dismissed speculation that it would be sent abroad for an inquiry.
The London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport there on June 12 afternoon, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board. One passenger survived.
The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane was recovered from the site on June 13.
A black box is a small device that records information about an aircraft during its flight. It helps in the investigation of aviation accidents.
Asked about some media reports suggesting the black box would be sent abroad for a probe into the incident, Naidu said, "...it is all speculation. The black box is very much in India and it it currently being investigated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)." To a query on when is the black box data expected to be retrieved, the minister said it is a very technical matter.
"Let the AAIB conduct the probe and go through the entire process," he added.
Naidu was speaking here on the sidelines of the Helicopters & Small Aircraft Summit 2025, organised by FICCI jointly with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
A high-level panel has been set up to investigate the causes of the Ahmedabad plane crash and the investigation is progressing smoothly, the government said after the incident.
"Decoding the black box is going to give an in-depth insight into what happened moments before the plane crash," Naidu had earlier said.

Earlier, SIT had uncovered a video during the investigation showing Naidu managing a cash stash at a safe house, allegedly acting as the in-charge of the location where the scam money was stored. The latest leak of his videos and photos further illustrates the extravagant lifestyle funded through alleged illegal proceeds. Surprisingly, it was learnt that the video was found in Venkatesh's mobile phone itself. SIT sources confirmed that Venkatesh Naidu is a close aide of YSRCP senior leader and former Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The two are believed to share an inseparable political association. During the 2024 general elections, Chevireddy contested from the Ongole Lok Sabha constituency as YSRCP candidate, and Venkatesh Naidu filed a nomination as an independent from the same seat. Though his nomination was later rejected it was widely felt that he filed it as a dummy for Chevireddy. SIT has noted that Chevireddy remained in constant contact with Naidu throughout the process and was actively involved in directing the movement and delivery of scam-related funds. Investigators have concluded that Naidu played a crucial role in ensuring that the money was transported and handed over as per Chevireddy's instructions. Venkatesh was said to have born in Nandyal and educated in Hyderabad, while his background has drawn renewed attention. Despite his apparent access to vast sums of money, Naidu in his 2024 election affidavit declared an annual income of only Rs 4.95 lakh for the financial year 2022–23. He reported assets worth Rs 10.70 lakh, including bank balances and cash, and claimed he owned no immovable property. The sharp contrast between his declared financial status and the opulence seen in the videos has sparked widespread outrage online. The chief minister, who took stock of the gross state domestic product (GSDP) status with finance and planning minister P Keshav and senior officials on Monday, said improving the per capita income would enhance people's living standards. He set a target of achieving a per capita income of ₹3,47,871 by the 2025-26 fiscal year and projected a goal of ₹5.42 lakh per capita income by 2029. He reiterated that govt depts must prepare and implement advance plans in their respective sectors. "We should work with vision aligned to short, medium, and long-term goals. We must identify global trends and seize emerging opportunities. Programs should be implemented with a focus on people, society, families, and individuals," he said, and asked the planning dept to work like Niti Aayog and devise the best plans to put Andhra Pradesh on the growth corridor. He asked the officials to take a family as a unit while designing schemes and programs, providing basic needs. Along with welfare schemes, initiatives should be taken to increase their incomes, he observed. He noted that the policies and public mindset should align in a way that benefits the environment. Kerala man held while celebrating theft at Tasmac outlet
A 43-year-old man from Kerala was arrested from a Tasmac outlet near Coimbatore railway station when he was celebrating the theft of valuables belonging to a passenger on Sunday. Syeed Ahammed Mubeen, who hails from Vellayil in Kozhikode, was arrested by a joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), its Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) - Salem and the Government Railway Police (GRP). According to the RPF, S. Vijay Nagaraj, 41, from Cromepet in Chennai complained that his shoulder bag containing laptop and a few other items went missing when a Chennai-bound train he travelled departed from Coimbatore station around 5.40 p.m. on Sunday. A joint RPF, CIB Salem and GRP swiftly acted and apprehended Mubeen, who went to a Tasmac outlet close to the railway station, after the theft. He was found with a black shoulder bag containing a laptop valued ₹3 lakh, an earbud priced ₹38,000, driving licence and registration certificate belonging to the complainant. When questioned, he admitted to having stolen the bag of the passenger. He went to the Tasmac outlet to celebrate the successful theft. The accused was brought to the GRP station, Coimbatore, where a case was registered against him. He was arrested and produced before the Sixth Judicial Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
