Pixar Gives First Look at ‘Toy Story 5,' Teases New Original ‘Gatto' at Annecy
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter took the stage to present behind-the-scenes material from Toy Story 5, revealing early footage and confirming the return of franchise veterans Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cussack. Directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris and produced by Jessica Choi, the fifth installment in Pixar's flagship franchise is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.

Docter shared that the new film will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. 'It's Toy meets Tech,' he said, outlining the film's plot, which will see the original movies' team of toys facing up to the challenge presented by the new favorite plaything of their 8-year-old owner Bonnie Anderson: A tech tablet called Lillypad. Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang will confront a new generation of children more enamored with screens than playthings.
Docter screened the world premiere of the film's opening scene, in which a container full of Buzz Lightyears awakens on an isolated desert island and struggles to reconnect with 'star command.'
Toy Story 5 will also feature Ernie Hudson voicing Combat Carl, taking over the role originally voiced by the late Carl Weathers. In honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary, the Annecy audience was also treated to archival footage from the making of the original 1995 Toy Story, Pixar's first full-length feature.
Docter also announced a brand-new animated feature, the original Gatto. The feature, to be directed by Luca filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, follows Nero, a water-hating black cat living in the picturesque city of Venice, Italy, who befriends Maya, a lonely street musician. Docter gave a sneak peek at the first animated tests and character drawings for the movie, which will have a much more painterly design than is typical of Pixar. Gatto is set to premiere in the summer of 2027.
The studio also debuted a first-look clip from Hoppers, an original Pixar comedy about Mabel (Piper Curda), a nature-loving young woman trying to stop the local Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm), from building a highway that will destroy her local woodlands. Thanks to a secret brain-swapping experiment, Mabel is able to transfer her mind into a robot beaver and heads to a pond, where refugees from the encroaching industrialization have landed. There, she tries to convince the animals, led by the regal beaver King George (Bobby Moynihan) to join her and stop the highway.
The Annecy session also included a preview of Elio, directed by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, and produced by Mary Alice Drumm. The science fiction adventure, which premieres in theaters on June 20, follows 11-year-old Elio Solis (voiced by Yonas Kibreab), who is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador after being abducted by aliens. The voice cast includes Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson. Elio premiered earlier this week in Los Angeles. The Annecy crowd was treated to a full 25 minutes of footage.

Pixar's ‘Elio' reportedly stripped of queer representation after test screenings
The version of 'Elio' that hit theaters on June 20 is not the same movie that Adrian Molina, the film's original director, intended to put out. Pixar removed LGBTQ+ elements from the animated feature after receiving negative feedback from test screenings with audience members and executives, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film follows an 11-year-old boy named Elio who is mistaken for Earth's ambassador by aliens and is beamed up to the Communiverse — an intergalactic organization — to represent the planet. Trouble began in the summer of 2023 during a test screening in Arizona. After the film was over, audience members were asked to raise their hand if the movies was something they'd pay to see in theaters. No one did, causing Pixar executives to worry. According to THR, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter informed Molina after a separate screening for company executives that storyboard artist Madeline Sharafian would be promoted to co-director. Molina, who is gay, was given the option to co-direct the film with Sharafian but chose to exit the project instead after his original vision was changed. Shortly after, Docter announced internally that 'Turning Red' director and co-writer Domee Shi would join 'Elio' as co-director. Changes to the film included getting rid of a scene in which Elio shows off a pink tank top made out of beach litter to a hermit crab, as well as removing picture frames from Elio's bedroom wall that displayed a male crush. Executives also asked him to make the main character more 'masculine.' 'I was deeply saddened and aggrieved by the changes that were made,' former Pixar assistant editor Sarah Ligatich, who was a member of the company's internal LGBTQ+ group and provided feedback during the production of 'Elio,' told THR. Ligatich added that a number of creatives working behind the scenes left after the new directors went in a different direction. 'The exodus of talent after that cut was really indicative of how unhappy a lot of people were that they had changed and destroyed this beautiful work,' she said. Actor America Ferrera was originally attached to the project as the voice of Elio's mother, Olga. Following Molina's departure, the 'Barbie' actor left the production because the film lacked 'Latinx representation in the leadership.' The character was later changed to be Elio's aunt and was voiced by Zoe Saldaña. In March 2025, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger announced Molina would return as co-director for 'Coco 2,' a follow-up to the 2017 film he co-wrote and co-directed. 'Elio' earned Pixar its worst domestic opening after it premiered on June 20. he film made $21 million at the box office and currently holds a 'fresh' 83% critics rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes. 'The Elio that is in theaters right now is far worse than Adrian's best version of the original,' a former Pixar staffer who worked on the film told THR. '[The character] Elio was just so cute and so much fun and had so much personality, and now he feels much more generic to me,' added another Pixar staffer. In a 2018 interview with the Huffington Post, Molina said he was 'all for it' when asked what it would take for an animated studio to green light a story with a queer protagonist. The Times reached out to Pixar for comment, but the studio did not respond.

The Sandman Season 2, Volume 1 Finale: Dream Spills Family Blood, Setting Up a ‘Spectacular' Run of Final Episodes, EP Says
Heads up: The first half of The Sandman's second season ends with the normally stoic Dream bent in half and sobbing over the choices he's made. In a minute, we'll talk with showrunner Allan Heinberg about how the events of the Season 2, Volume 1 finale set Dream and his siblings up for some serious badness when Volume 2 arrives later this month. But first, a quick recap of Episode 6, 'Family Blood.' More from TVLine Ironheart Boss Explains That Fight Set at a White Castle, 'One of the Truest Midwest Things You Could Do!' Nine Perfect Strangers' Finale Leaves the Door Open for Season 3 - Do You Hope to See It Return? The Sandman EP Allan Heinberg Details Neil Gaiman's Involvement in Season 2 The hour begins with Dream contacting Lady Johanna Constantine in the late 1700s to ask for her help: He needs her to go to Paris and retrieve the disembodied head of his son, Orpheus, which has ended up confiscated by Maximilien Robespierre during his Reign of Terror. Robespierre is convinced that the head is an object of 'superstition and decadence,' and he wants it destroyed. So he throws Johanna in prison until his men locate where she's hidden her contraband: in a pile consisting of the noggins of Robespierre's other victims. Just when it looks like all is lost, Orpheus opens his mouth and begins singing a song so powerful it causes all the other dead heads to join in. Robespierre and his men are transfixed, frozen to the spot as Johanna grabs Orpheus and slips away. (The song, we also learn, spurred the French people to put an end to Robespierre's reign soon after.) After successfully ferrying Orpheus to a temple where he will be kept safe for all eternity — because he can't die, remember? — Johanna asks Dream for her payment, and when we return to the present, we see that he granted it: She was buried near Orpheus' temple after she died. Dream asks Orpheus where Destruction has been hiding all this time, and it turns out that he's been holed up on an island near Orpheus' temple — because he knew his brother was trying to stay as far away from Orpheus as possible. We learn that Destructions' scrying pool was responsible for all the carnage they'd encountered along the way (Ishtar, etc.) Destruction then says he won't return with his siblings; destruction will continue to happen, regardless, and he doesn't want it to be his fault. So he takes his sword, entrusts Barnabas to Delirium's care (or maybe the other way around), and tells Dream to remember that he left out of love for humankind. 'Love is the only good reason to do anything,' he adds. Then Dream returns to Orpheus' island, alone, and grants his son's wish: He kills Orpheus with a powerful and bloody punch to the middle of his face. After, he comes home to the Dreaming and washes Orpheus' blood off his hands, crying as he does so. In the hour's final scene, we see the three Fates, hanging out and knitting. Two of them seem inclined to give Dream a little leeway, but one makes it clear that she's ready to hold him accountable for spilling family blood. 'Got to finish sometime,' she says, grabbing a pair of scissors and cutting some yarn in decisive fashion as the episode goes to black. When I spoke with showrunner Allan Heinberg, he said Dream's inner journey this season is just getting underway. Read on to hear his thoughts on what's ahead when Volume 2 starts streaming on Thursday, July 24. TVLINE | This is quite a reckoning for Morpheus this season, right? He is grappling with stuff that I feel like he didn't think all that much about in the first HEINBERG | Absolutely. So much of the first season was about his reaction to his captivity and his rage. He was so righteous in [the idea of] he's a victim. He was going to fix things, even with the Corinthian. It wasn't an inward journey. It was very much a 'I've been away and I'm going to put my house in order' journey, and I think he came out of it with an increased appreciation for Lucienne's contribution. And I think Death offered him some perspective. Season 1 humanized him to the degree that his journey toward empathy was just sort of starting… It had never occurred to him that he's the villain in the Nada story, that he acted dishonorably. And it's his pride and his ego that dictates the trip back to Hell, more than anything else. Even when he says to Nada, 'Now I rescued you from Hell, will you marry me?,' he's still not getting it.[Laughs] He's still not thinking about things from her point of view… You're right: We're peeling away the layers. Because the Orpheus stuff cuts even deeper with him. And then once he makes the decision he makes at the end of Episode 6, the back half of the season becomes a fundamental question of 'Who am I, and what is important to me?' You know? And 'What am I fighting for, in the back half? Am I fighting for my ego? Am I fighting for my kingdom?' He's definitely fighting in the back half. I can't wait for you to see Tom's [Sturridge, who plays Dream] work in the back half. It's truly spectacular. Now it's your turn. Grade both the episode and Season 2, Volume 1 via the polls below, then hit the comments with your thoughts! Magic Johnson Enjoys His Vacation On $140 Million Yacht
Magic Johnson Enjoys His Vacation On $140 Million Yacht originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Magic Johnson is living the kind of summer most people can only dream about and he's doing it in grand, billionaire style. The NBA legend, Hall of Famer, and business tycoon has taken over the Mediterranean aboard the PHOENIX2, a $140 million superyacht so luxurious it caught the attention of Tom Brady, who couldn't resist commenting on Magic's Instagram post. With six weeks of luxury travel lined up alongside his wife Cookie and a roster of celebrity friends, Johnson is proving once again that his post-basketball life may be as legendary as his playing career. The PHOENIX2 yacht, rented by Magic for a reported $1.25 million per week, is more floating five-star resort than mere boat. Built by the famed Lürssen Yachts, it boasts seven cabins, a two-level main suite with panoramic ocean views, multiple pools, a full gym, wellness center, salon, cinema halls (both indoor and outdoor), and a jacuzzi-laced private terrace. The vessel can house 12 guests and includes 29 crew members, all dedicated to ensuring the ultimate luxury experience. Magic's six-week odyssey began in Antibes, France, and has so far taken him through Italy (Capri, Sicily, Portofino), Greece (Mykonos, Santorini, Oia, Kalami), Croatia, and Montenegro. Along the way, Johnson has dined at world-famous venues like the Four Seasons Hotel in Sicily made famous by The White Lotus and Da Paolino Ristorante in Capri, where he was joined by none other than Michael Jordan, Samuel L. Jackson, Judge Greg Mathis, and their spouses. Naturally, the yacht life includes extravagant celebrations. Magic and Cookie hosted a Greek-themed toga party with friends while sailing through the Ionian Islands, a moment he proudly shared online: 'We had a fun toga party on the yacht last night with our friends and the crew!' Later, they were joined by their children and grandchildren, turning the floating palace into a family affair. Despite the luxurious escape, Magic's business empire remains firmly intact. Worth an estimated $1.5 billion, Johnson's portfolio spans ownership stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), Washington Commanders (NFL), LA Sparks (WNBA), LAFC (MLS), and Washington Spirit (NWSL). He's also invested heavily in real estate, urban development, and healthcare, often with a focus on underserved communities. From an NBA career that earned him just under $40 million, a sum OG Anunoby will eclipse in a single season, Magic has transformed into a business mogul through vision, discipline, and savvy investments. His historic $25 million contract with the Lakers in the '80s, then the richest in sports, was just the beginning. Today, he's waving to fans from the top deck of a yacht that costs more per week than most Americans earn in years. As Magic and Cookie toast another sunset in the Mediterranean, one thing is clear: Magic Johnson is still showtime just with waves and wine instead of basketballs and buzzer-beaters. This story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 3, 2025, where it first appeared.
