Lions LB Alex Anzalone ‘disappointed' with contract talks
Anzalone has reached the final season of his three-year, $18.75 million deal signed in 2023 but believes he is underpaid relative to other linebackers around the league.
"I want to retire a Lion. I want that opportunity," Anzalone told reporters Tuesday. "That's how I feel."
Anzalone is working through a hamstring injury and has yet to practice at camp. Asked if he believes he will return to the practice field without a new deal, he said he had "no clue."
That follows coach Dan Campbell telling reporters Sunday that he did not believe Anzalone was conducting a "hold-in," in which he reports to camp but sits out of team activities.
Anzalone, 30, followed Campbell from the New Orleans Saints to the Lions in 2021 and instantly became a starting inside linebacker for Detroit. In 57 games (all starts) with the franchise, he has amassed 395 tackles (22 for loss), 6.5 sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
"I'm disappointed, I'll just say that. I'm disappointed," Anzalone said.

July 26 - Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon is expected to miss multiple weeks of training camp due to a foot injury, NFL Network reported Saturday. He will be re-evaluated later this summer to see if he'll be ready for the Sept. 7 season opener against the host Los Angeles Rams, per the report. Blackhawks G Arvid Soderblom signs 2-year extension
July 26 - The Chicago Blackhawks signed goaltender Arvid Soderblom to a two-year, $5.5 million extension on Saturday. The deal runs through the 2026-27 season for Soderblom, who avoided arbitration. Soderblom, 25, posted a 10-18-7 record with a 3.18 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in 36 games (33 starts) last season. He set career highs in both wins and games played. Giants' pitching staff dwindles as Landen Roupp hits IL
July 26 - The San Francisco Giants' rotation took another hit when right-hander Landen Roupp landed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. The move announced Friday is retroactive to Wednesday for Roupp, whose MRI exam showed no structural issues, according to The Athletic. The Giants are down to three regular starters with All-Stars Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. "In flux," manager Bob Melvin said of his rotation. "Probably Tuesday we'll have to make a move. ... We have to be prepared for anything." Roupp, 26, is 7-6 with a 3.11 ERA through 20 starts. He allowed four hits and struck out six in five scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday. In a corresponding move Friday, San Francisco recalled right-hander Tristan Beck from Triple-A Sacramento.
