His sister turned out to be his mother: Oscar-winner actor found family secret while doing movie about family deception

Synopsis
Jack Nicholson spent nearly four decades believing his grandmother was his mother and that his real mother, June, was his sister. The truth was revealed in 1974 when Time magazine researchers uncovered his true parentage while preparing a profile on the actor. Nicholson later confirmed the details through family members, but both women had already passed away by then. While he described the discovery as dramatic, he said it was not traumatic and expressed admiration for how well the secret had been kept.
Jack Nicholson Lived Through a Family Lie for 37 Years Hollywood icon and three time Oscar-winner actor Jack Nicholson spent nearly 40 years of his life unaware of a deeply personal family truth that mirrored the kind of dramatic plot twists found in his films. Born in 1937 in Neptune, New Jersey, Nicholson believed the woman who raised him, Ethel May, was his mother and that June, the woman he called his sister, was just that—an older sibling. But in reality, June was his biological mother, and Ethel May, his grandmother.According to Unliad, the complex arrangement was the result of the social stigma around unwed pregnancies during that era. June was just 18 years old when she became pregnant with Nicholson. The father, identified only as Don, was a married man. In an effort to avoid public disgrace, Ethel May decided to raise the baby herself, while June was introduced to the world—and to Nicholson—as his older sister.
At age four, Nicholson's 'sister' June left for Miami to pursue a career as a showgirl. Nicholson remained in New Jersey with Ethel May. When he turned 17, he moved to Los Angeles to reunite with June, who by then had moved west to explore opportunities in entertainment. 'Since my only relative in the world was June, who was out here, I came out to look around,' Nicholson recalled in a 1986 interview with Rolling Stone. He began his career at MGM Studios as an office assistant in the animation department, where his talent and charm quickly led to acting opportunities. But as his fame grew, so did interest in his personal life.In 1974, just as Chinatown was set to release, Time magazine prepared a profile on the actor. During the research process, the magazine's team uncovered startling details about Nicholson's parentage. They contacted him directly to verify findings that contradicted the actor's understanding of his family: that June was in fact his mother and Ethel May his grandmother. They also believed his father might still be alive and residing in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.Shocked by the revelation, Nicholson reached out to a family member for clarification. According to biographer Patrick McGilligan in Jack's Life, the actor phoned his aunt Lorraine's husband, Shorty, saying it was the most disturbing information he had ever received. Initially, the family member denied the claim, but later admitted it was true. Sadly, by then, both June and Ethel May had died, robbing Nicholson of the chance to speak to them about the long-kept secret.Despite the unexpected nature of the discovery, Nicholson later described the experience as 'dramatic' rather than 'traumatizing.' In his interview with Rolling Stone, he expressed a certain respect for the family's ability to maintain the secret for so long. 'I was very impressed by their ability to keep the secret, if nothing else,' he said, acknowledging that the situation, while unconventional, had not harmed him emotionally. 'It's done great things for me.'Interestingly, the revelation coincided with Chinatown, a film in which Nicholson's character unearths a disturbing family truth—adding a haunting parallel between his real and reel life. While Nicholson has rarely spoken about the matter publicly, he has jokingly referred to June as his 'sister-mother' in past interviews.

Oscar-Nominated Cinematographer Máté Herbai Joins Amit Rai For Dharma Starring Pankaj Tripathi

Máté Herbai collaborates with OMG 2 director Amit Rai for Dharma starring Pankaj Tripathi. The film explores morality and nature through visual poetry. Celebrated Hungarian cinematographer Máté Herbai, known globally for his hauntingly lyrical work on the Oscar-nominated and Berlinale Golden Bear-winning On Body and Soul, has collaborated with Indian filmmaker Amit Rai for Dharma, an emotionally charged drama that recently wrapped shooting in Bihar. Headlined by the ever-versatile Pankaj Tripathi, the film marks Rai's directorial return after the massive critical and commercial success of OMG 2 in 2023. An original tale rooted in environmental consciousness and moral inquiry, Dharma brings together an eclectic ensemble cast including Pawan Malhotra, Geeta Agrawal, Rajesh Kumar, and several actors from the Bhojpuri film industry. But what truly elevates the cinematic promise of Dharma is the visual craftsmanship of Máté Herbai, whose work is renowned for its sensitivity, poetic realism, and atmospheric depth. Speaking about how the collaboration came to be, Herbai shared, 'Arindra, the producer, had reached out to me with a few scripts before, but we never managed to match my schedule with the shoot. This time, there was a slight delay, but it finally worked out — and I was happy to say yes, especially because I really liked the script. And maybe most importantly, as a cinematographer, I found Amit (the director) super interesting just from our initial talks." That early instinct proved right. Herbai and Amit Rai struck a creative rapport quickly once filming began. 'Working with Amit was great — we clicked right away. He's full of creative ideas, and his directing style, the way he guides scenes and works with actors, is often actually fun. That's something I really appreciate — he doesn't take everything too seriously, which brings a good vibe to the scenes. Also, as a cinematographer, it's a huge plus when the director thinks in visuals — and Amit definitely does," he added. Having worked across a range of international productions in countries including the UK, Turkey, Japan, and the US, Herbai also praised the Indian crew for their professionalism and spirit. 'I had everything I'm used to, maybe even more. Here, the 1st AD takes on way more than usual, which really lightens the load for the DP. And our crew was fantastic — just a bunch of awesome people and top-notch pros. Couldn't have asked for better!" he said with enthusiasm. There was, however, one cultural curveball: 'Honestly, the only challenge was the spicy food — but even with that, the production really tried to help me out," Herbai quipped. As anticipation builds for Dharma, which promises to be as thought-provoking as it is visually rich, a release date is expected to be announced soon. With Amit Rai's storytelling prowess, Pankaj Tripathi's gravitas, and Máté Herbai's lens weaving visual poetry, Dharma is poised to be one of the most compelling Indian films of the year. Hans Zimmer joins Euphoria: Season 3's soundtrack is about to go cosmic

In a twist that has electrified both film and TV fans, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer has officially joined Euphoria Season 3 — marking a rare venture into episodic television for the musical mastermind behind Inception (2010), Gladiator (2000), and Interstellar (2014). He'll be teaming up with Labrinth, who returns after shaping the show's signature sonic landscape across its first two seasons. Zendaya in Euphoria and Hans Zimmer 'It's an honour to join this incredible team of storytellers led by the visionary Sam Levinson,' Zimmer said in a statement. 'Together, they have crafted such a bold and moving series that has meant so much to audiences. Labrinth's music has shaped the show's identity and I'm looking forward to contributing to the ongoing story and helping shape this new season through music.' Labrinth, the artist behind unforgettable tracks like I'm Tired and All for Us, is equally thrilled to be collaborating with Zimmer. 'Another chapter in the Euphoria universe! So great to join Hans, one of my heroes in film score, and bring some new magic to this new season. Love x,' he said. Zimmer's involvement is especially fitting, given that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has long cited him as an influence. 'It's a true honour to be working alongside Hans. I wrote this season to the score of Interstellar and True Romance. So he's been ingrained in the creative DNA since the beginning,' Levinson shared. 'I'm really proud of the work Labrinth and I have done in previous seasons and am excited for Hans to push us to new heights.' With production finally underway and a star-studded cast — including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and newcomers like Sharon Stone and Rosalía — Euphoria Season 3 is aiming for a 2026 release. If the music is any clue, this next chapter will be its most emotionally resonant and cinematic yet.

Vanessa Kirby's fake baby bump in Fantastic Four was heavier than real pregnancy: ‘Gave myself a backache for no reason'

Before stepping onto the Avengers: Doomsday set with a real baby bump, Hollywood star Vanessa Kirby had already rehearsed pregnancy—sort of. While filming the recently released MCU film Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Oscar-nominated actor wore a foam prosthetic belly to play Sue Storm, who is expecting a child in the film. But Vanessa revealed she wasn't convinced by its lightness. Vanessa Kirby is currently shooting for Avengers: Doomsday In a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the 37-year-old actor revealed that she kept telling her costume handler the bump needed to feel heavier. 'It was like this light foam thing, and I kept saying, 'I want more. It needs to be heavier,'' she recalled. Eventually, they stuffed the prop with rice packets to increase the weight. The result? It became so heavy that Kirby ended up with a serious backache. 'I gave myself backache for no reason at all,' she joked, noting that her real pregnancy belly turned out to be much lighter in comparison. That 'crazy timing,' as she put it, made its way into her next major project. Now actually pregnant, Vanessa is shooting Avengers: Doomsday, the latest installment in Marvel's mega-franchise. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she opened up about the surreal experience of filming a superhero blockbuster while expecting her first child. Calling it 'the coolest thing,' Vanessa praised the support she's received from the cast and crew on set. 'They've been utterly amazing,' she said, singling out directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, for their encouragement and understanding throughout the shoot. In Fantastic Four: First Steps, Vanessa's Sue Storm is not only navigating pregnancy but also preparing for life as a mother to Franklin, her and Reed Richards' (Pedro Pascal) super-powered child. For Vanessa, the parallel between fiction and reality couldn't be more uncanny—or more poetic.
