Devil's Den double homicide victims identified; manhunt continues

Yahooa day ago
WEST FORK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A couple was killed July 26 while hiking with their two daughters at Devil's Den State Park; the girls, ages 7 and 9, were unharmed and are safe with family.
Arkansas State Police identified the victims as Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. The couple had recently moved to Prairie Grove from out of state, according to the release.
The double homicide was reported around 2:40 p.m. on July 26. Investigators with ASP's Criminal Investigation Division say the Brinks were found dead along a walking trail in a remote area of the park.
Suspect still at large
Law enforcement continues to search for the suspect, described as a white male of medium build. Witnesses last saw him wearing dark pants, a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a dark ballcap, sunglasses, fingerless gloves and a black backpack.
He was seen driving a black four-door sedan, possibly a Mazda, with the license plate obscured by electrical or duct tape. The vehicle was reportedly headed toward a park exit and may have traveled on State Highways 170 or 220.
Authorities are asking park visitors to review any cellphone, GoPro or camera footage from Saturday for possible images of the suspect. Residents near the park are also asked to check their security or game camera footage.
Anyone with information should contact ASP Troop L at (479) 751-6663.
'Investigators urge anyone with photos or video to not post footage on social media, as this may inadvertently jeopardize the investigation,' ASP said in the release.
Devil's Den State Park closed
Devil's Den State Park remains partially closed as of July 27, with the area where the attack happened still secured by law enforcement. The park's rugged terrain, thick vegetation and lack of cell service have complicated the search efforts.
Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism Secretary Shea Lewis said the agency is working closely with ASP and has increased law enforcement presence in state parks.
'We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil's Den State Park,' Lewis said in a statement. 'Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.'
ASP Col. Mike Hagar thanked the public for their support and emphasized the agency's commitment to solving the case.
'We are using all available resources to apprehend this suspect and bring him to justice,' Hagar said. 'This was a heinous crime, and we won't stop until he's found.'
The investigation is ongoing.Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Arkansas Police Arrest Suspect In Devil's Den State Park Double Homicide

Arkansas State Police arrested Andrew James McGann, 28, of Springdale, on Wednesday in connection with the brutal slayings of a married couple at Devil's Den State Park. The victims, Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were killed while hiking with their two young daughters on Saturday. McGann was apprehended at 4:57 p.m. at a hair salon in Springdale, about 30 miles north of the 2,500-acre park, and charged with two counts of capital murder. Authorities said the couple's daughters, ages 7 and 9, were unharmed and are now with relatives. The Brinks, who recently relocated to Prairie Grove from South Dakota, were found dead on a remote trail after police received reports of a double homicide at 2:40 p.m. Saturday. Clinton Brink was set to start work as a milk delivery driver in Fayetteville, while Cristen Brink was a licensed nurse, according to their employer and public records. Investigators have not disclosed the cause of death or a motive, citing the ongoing investigation. Maj. Stacie Rhoads of the Arkansas State Police said public-submitted video footage was 'instrumental' in identifying McGann, who recently moved from Oklahoma and was hired as a teacher for the upcoming school year at Springdale School District. Superintendent Jared Cleveland confirmed McGann had not yet interacted with students or families. Previously, McGann taught fifth grade at Sand Springs Public Schools in Oklahoma during the 2024-25 school year and worked at Broken Arrow Public Schools in 2023-24, where he passed required background checks, according to district statements. Prior to that, McGann was employed in Texas at Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, CBS reported. He resigned in 2023 after he was investigated for 'poor classroom management and poor professional judgement.' 'While our investigation did not find any evidence of inappropriate behavior with a student, we did find his classroom management and professional judgment to be below our district's expectations,' a school administrator said in an email to parents in 2023. Flower Mound resident Sierra Marcum told CBS News that her son was in McGann's fourth-grade classroom three years ago at Donald Elementary, and she described him as 'Pretty cold. You could ask him a question and he would give you a one word response. Overall just pretty disinterested in his students.' Marcum's son told her that McGann touched the girls in the class inappropriately, put them on his lap, and kept them in the classroom during recess. 'It was reported to the principal, Heather Shorter, at the time and he was allowed to resign without any consequence and even went on to continue teaching in another district,' Marcum wrote in a Facebook post. 'Finding out he went on to kill a couple in front of their two little girls is horrifying and the fact that there were warning signs and he was continually allowed around children is a travesty.' Although investigators have not commented on a possible motive for the murders, McGann's reported previous history of inappropriate conduct with female students has fueled speculation that McGann may have targeted the Brink family's two daughters, and the parents may have been killed while protecting their children. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed grief over the 'senseless and horrific crime,' stating, 'No news can heal the enormous harm done to the Brink family in last weekend's crime, but this arrest is a comfort and reassurance for our State.' She praised the collaborative efforts of state police, park rangers, local law enforcement, and federal partners, adding, 'Let there be no mistake—we do not tolerate violent crime in Arkansas.' Col. Mike Hagar, director of Arkansas State Police, commended the investigation, saying, 'Because of their hard work and investigative skill, we were able to take a monster off the streets, and bring relief to those two precious girls, and the rest of our citizens.' The Brink family described the couple as 'heroes' who died protecting their daughters. 'Clinton and Cristen died heroes, protecting their little girls, and they deserve justice,' their family said in a statement. Police had earlier released a composite sketch and a photo of a man seen leaving the park in a black, four-door sedan, possibly a Mazda, with a license plate that had been taped over. The FBI provided manpower and resources to aid the investigation. McGann is held at the Washington County jail, with court appearances pending. It is unclear if he has legal representation. All trails at Devil's Den State Park remain closed, according to Arkansas Secretary of Parks Shay Lewis. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Arkansas State Police.

Teacher Confesses He Killed Couple In Arkansas State Park

A 28-year-old teacher has admitted to fatally stabbing a married couple who were hiking with their two young daughters at Devil's Den State Park on Saturday, in what authorities describe as a random and chilling attack. Andrew James McGann, of Springdale, was arrested Wednesday at a barbershop and is being held without bond after a brief court appearance on Friday. Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were attacked Saturday while hiking with their daughters, ages 7 and 9, on a trail about half a mile into the 2,500-acre park near West Fork, about 45 miles north of Fort Smith. The couple, who had recently moved to Prairie Grove from North Dakota, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their children were unharmed and are now in the care of relatives, authorities said. 'We believe that the mother took them to safety, and then returned to help her husband,' said Maj. Stacie Rhoads, commander of the Arkansas State Police's criminal investigation division, during a Thursday press briefing. Investigators said Clinton Brink was stabbed first, followed by his wife, who was attacked after returning to aid him. The couple's third daughter was not present during the incident, according to Arkansas State Police Director Col. Mike Hagar. McGann, who had recently relocated from Oklahoma to take a teaching position with Springdale Public Schools, was apprehended after a days-long manhunt. Authorities tracked him down using a witness's description of a black Kia Stinger, its license plate taped over, seen leaving the park. A preliminary prosecutor's report noted a witness observed a person with blood on their face emerging from the trail and entering the vehicle. Investigators later found what appeared to be blood inside the car at the barbershop where McGann was arrested. DNA evidence from blood at the crime scene matched McGann's, and he sustained cuts on his hands during a struggle with the victims, according to a law enforcement official. Hagar confirmed McGann confessed to the killings during an interview, stating he 'made statements indicating that he had committed the two homicides.' The prosecutor's report described the attack as planned, pointing to the taped-over license plate as evidence of premeditation. He alleged that McGann 'waited with deliberated purpose and killed two hikers at the Devil's Den State Park.' 'In my 27 years that I've been with the State Police, this is probably one of the most heinous that we've had, especially the aspect of just how random it was,' Rhoads said. No motive has been disclosed, with Hagar noting it remains under investigation but appeared to be a 'completely random event.' Authorities found no prior connection between McGann and the Brinks. Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter said the state will not waive the death penalty if McGann is convicted. McGann, who has no known criminal record, was appointed a public defender during a brief court appearance Friday, where he entered a not guilty plea, according to Little Rock ABC affiliate KATV. McGann had not yet started his role at Springdale Public Schools, and the district confirmed he had no contact with students or families. He previously taught fifth grade in Oklahoma and fourth grade in Flower Mound, Texas. The attack has shaken Northwest Arkansas, prompting the closure of the trails at Devil's Den State Park. 'Our entire state is grieving for the tragic loss and senseless and horrific crime that's taken place in this area,' Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a Wednesday press conference.
