Daily Mail12-07-2025
An 11-year-old girl plunged 230ft to her death after running off from her parents during a family vacation.
Bianca Bernardon Zanella let her curiosity get the better of her when she ran towards the biggest canyon in Brazil on Thursday and lost her footing.
Her dad said the family was about to return to the base of the Fortaleza Canyon in Cambara do Sul when the tragedy unfolded at about 1pm local time.
Died: Bianca Bernardon Zanella died after falling off a cliff at Fortaleza Canyon in Cambara do Sul, Brazil on Thursday. The 11-year-old, who was diagnosed with autism, reportedly ran from a bench where her parents were about to sit and was chased by her father, who was unable to prevent her fall
Zanella's father told CambarA do Sul police chief Fernanda Aranha they were about to return to the base of the canyon before his wife escorted their two sons, ages 5 and 9, to a snack bar.
He stood behind with Zanella, who had autism. They were about to sit on a bench located in an area of the canyon that is considered the highest point.
Zanella at one point ran while her father was not looking and was chased before falling off the cliff around 1pm local time.
The youngster's body was located in the canyon around 5.30pm with the use of a drone that was deployed by the fire department.
A search mission via helicopter was postponed due to fog and bad weather at the canyon.
A team of firefighters rappelled into the mountain in a mission and found Bianca dead at around 11pm.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was shocked by Zanella's death.
'The death of little Bianca Zanella, 11, moved me deeply,' Lula wrote on his X account Friday morning.
'She fell from a cliff in the Serra Geral National Park, in Rio Grande do Sul, and despite the brave efforts of security forces, it was not possible to rescue her alive.
'I express my deepest sympathy to his parents and family, and I pray that God brings them comfort in this time of grief.'
Serra Geral National Park was closed to visitors on Friday as part of a Rio Grande do Sul Civil Police investigation.
Fortaleza Canyon, which is 4.7 miles long and 6,561ft wide, is 3,795ft above sea level and 14 miles from the city center.
The site features several guarded trails, including the Mirante Trail, which offers a complete view of the canyon.

Fast Show actor's transgender child took own life after 'traumatic' stint in hospital, inquest hears

The transgender child of a Fast Show actor took their own life after a 'traumatic' stint in hospital, an inquest heard. Cal Shearer, 25, was found hanged at home in Oxford on October 30. The Neuroscience PHD student's famous father Paul Shearer starred on the comedy series The Fast Show between 1994 to 1997. He paid tribute to Cal, who was also autistic, at an inquest into the Oxford University student's death. Paul said: 'There were many facets to their personality. After their death, Cal's mum in a social media post said they were brave, beautiful and compassionate. 'They were capable of warmth and love. They spent many hours helping at Oxford Nightline. 'Cal's death was a tragedy and incomprehensible to those around them.' The 25-year-old had a 'long battle' with suicidal thoughts and spent two 'traumatic' months in hospital last March, Oxford Coroner's Court heard. The family launched a complaint with the Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust over the handling of their child's care, saying there should have been more done to account for Cal's autism. Dr Stephen Merson, a consultant psychiatrist at the Trust, strongly denied that the care team had been 'dismissive' of Cal's autism, when asked at the inquest. He replied: 'No. We are improving our awareness of the implications of autism. I don't think we ignored the risk aspect.' Cal, who was raised in Bethnal Green, London, met their NHS worker wife Imogen Voysey-Shearer when they were seven-years-old classmates attending the private City of London School for Girls in 2006. Imogen told the inquest she did not think the mental health team knew how to provide adequate support to her partner. She added: 'Cal was someone who everyone liked. They helped others in so many ways. 'Cal was kind, funny and compassionate. Cal was liked in every area of their life, but felt their death was inevitable. Area coroner Nicholas Graham recorded a verdict of suicide and offered his condolences to the heartbroken family. He added: 'Concerns have been raised around Cal's mental health care and treatment. 'The trust has accepted failings in these areas. It was accepted there was an absence of a documented care plan. Brazil's top court rules out Bolsonaro arrest, for now

BRASILIA, July 24 (Reuters) - Brazil's Supreme Court decided on Thursday not to order the arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro for an "isolated" breach of court-imposed restrictions, but warned he could be imprisoned for future violations. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the case in which Bolsonaro is charged with plotting a coup, kept in place the restraining orders he imposed on the former president and clarified he is not forbidden from giving interviews. Moraes last week ordered Bolsonaro to wear an ankle bracelet and stop using social media over allegations he courted the interference of U.S. President Donald Trump, who tied new tariffs on Brazil to what he called a "witch hunt" against his ally. On Monday, the justice threatened Bolsonaro with arrest, saying he breached the restrictions on his social media use - including through third parties - when he talked to journalists in Brasilia. Moraes wrote in his Thursday decision that there is "no doubt" the order has not been complied with, saying that Bolsonaro's son Eduardo, who is in the U.S. to drum up support for his father in Washington, posted the former president's remarks on social media to benefit him. The justice added, however, that given that the breach was "isolated," it did not call for an arrest order. Bolsonaro's lawyers did not immediately comment on Thursday's decision, but the former president has always denied any wrongdoing. In an last week, Bolsonaro described Moraes' decision to prohibit his social media use as "cowardice," and said he intended to continue engaging with the press to ensure his voice was heard.
