The film was pre-acquired by Pyramide Distribution for France, which has set a September release, and Progress Film for Germany.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by physicist and Gulag survivor Georgy Demidov, the film is set in the Soviet Union's era of Great Terror, or Great Purge, in the late 1930s, in which Joseph Stalin consolidated his power by either killing or incarcerating political opponents in harsh labor camps.
The film focuses on a young prosecutor who sets out to challenge a system during this period after discovering a letter from a prisoner who is a desperate plea for help.
Deadline critic Damon Wise noted the contemporary resonance of the story, calling the film 'a bleak warning from history' in his review, adding it held 'relevance to every country wrestling with authoritarian political parties right now.'
The film is produced by Kevin Chneiweiss for France's SBS Productions, alongside Loznitsa's Netherlands-based banner Atoms & Void.
Additional producers include Germany's Looks Film, Latvia's White Picture, Romania's Avanpost Media, and Lithuania's Studio Uljana Kim. SBS International is handling rights for the U.S. and U.K.
Loznitsa, who is best known for his politically charged documentaries and strong fictional narratives, most recently presented his documentary The Invasion in the Special Screening Section at Cannes 2024.
His past feature credits include My Joy (Cannes Competition 2010), In the Fog (Cannes Competition 2022), A Gentle Creature (Cannes Competition 2017) and Donbass (Best Director, Cannes Un Certain Regard 2018).

Kaitlin Olson Explains Why, Even on ‘High Potential,' Her Characters Always Find Humor in the Darkness

Kaitlin Olson believes that being able to create genuine moments of levity in depressing situations is the secret to compelling television. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans know that dark humor has been one of Olson's specialties since the Lethal Weapon sequels. On her smash hit ABC crime drama High Potential, Olson has had the opportunity to deviate from her typical TV type and play an intelligent, emotionally stable and productive member of society, as opposed to the mercurial addict roles she's used to knocking out of the park. Olson's High Potential character, Morgan Gillory, is a genius-level cleaning-lady-turned-crime-solver who helps the LAPD investigate some of the most grisly murders in Southern California while navigating her complicated personal life and raising her three kids on her own. Compared to Olson's other most famous characters on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Hacks, Morgan is a much more grounded and sympathetic figure to the massive High Potential audience, but Olson insists that, even on a broadcast TV police procedural, there's always room for a good laugh at a gory crime scene. In a recent talk with Deadline, Olson discussed her shift in focus from comedy to drama for High Potential, explaining that she still felt it was important for her to incorporate comedic elements into her performance, even if the show wasn't as joke-y as her usual projects. 'I wanted to create a character that was very well-rounded, and there's a lot going on in her life, she's always overwhelmed," Olson said. 'There's always a lot going on in her brain, and sometimes she's able to laugh at herself.' 'She definitely feels fine making fun of people, especially when they're underestimating her, so there's comedy in that,' Olson continued. 'That's just human nature.' And, even if Morgan's version of making fun of people is a calm, concise quip that deconstructs their facade, that doesn't make her casual destructions any less entertaining than when Sweet Dee drunkenly screams swears into a stranger's face. 'I think that the best character-driven dramatic pieces of material, whether it's TV or movies, have comedy sprinkled in, because that's life,' Olson posited. 'There are funny moments and there are snarky things to be said that can be funny, and you have to be able to laugh in dark times. That's just the way the world works, it's also just more fun to watch.' But, to be clear, Olson's dramatic chops are in no way overshadowed by her preternatural comedic timing in High Potential. Said Olson on her recent switch from comedy to drama, 'I grew up doing theater, so I've done all kinds of things and you get to see little glimpses of it in Hacks and the film Champions.' We also got to see her thespian side in a little regional theater production called The Nightman Cometh: Get more Cracked directly to your inbox. Olivia Rodrigo's Wimbledon Look Sets the Standard for Summer Style

Olivia Rodrigo is the master of effortlessly cute style. The Guts singer was spotted earlier today at Wimbledon in London with her recently hard-launched boyfriend Louis Partridge, with whom she first sparked dating rumors back in October 2023. Rodrigo went all-in on color coordination, wearing a vintage Ralph Lauren gingham shirtdress from the spring 2000 collection. She paired the look with a Khaite Simona shoulder bag in an electric red rebel suede and red-rimmed Karen Wazen oval sunglasses. Though her dress is vintage, she has just cemented gingham as one of this summer's chicest print trends. Emma Watson also recently turned heads in Nice during the Cannes Film Festival in a powder-pink gingham midi dress—perfect for the sea breeze in the south of France. Whether you're dressing for a garden party, running errands on a hot summer day, or jetting between red carpet premieres, gingham is guaranteed to add a fresh pop of color to any look. Rodrigo was all smiles as she and Partridge chatted during the match. The singer is fresh off an incredibly successful string of performances—first at Gov Ball earlier in June, where she surprised fans by bringing out the legendary David Byrne of Talking Heads for a surprise performance, and most recently as the final headliner at Glastonbury. Over the weekend, she closed out the festival's Pyramid Stage with another iconic surprise: Robert Smith of The Cure. Together, they teamed up to perform the band's classics 'Just Like Heaven' and 'Friday I'm in Love.'

Cannes 2025: TikTok Redefines Film Culture On The Global Stage

As an official partner of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, TikTok returned to the Croisette with a robust programming slate designed to connect the global creative community with one of cinema's most iconic events. Through platform-native storytelling, creator-led content, and thoughtfully curated in-person moments, TikTok showcased its growing influence in shaping how global audiences engage with film. Over the course of the festival, TikTok gave users unprecedented access through exclusive behind-the-scenes content, red carpet highlights, interviews with talent and more, all discoverable through the official #Cannes2025 hashtag and the dedicated Festival de Cannes Hub in-app. The platform became a cultural lens through which audiences experienced the festival in real time, with creators capturing the energy, fashion, and love of film from their unique perspectives. In the lead-up to the event, TikTok launched the TikTok Film & TV Competition, inviting the global #FilmTok community to submit original content using #TikTokFilmTVCompetition. Running from April 10 to May 7, the competition garnered over 300,000 entries from creators in the US, France, UK, Germany, Korea, and Japan. Selected winners were hosted by TikTok during the second week of the festival, gaining exclusive access to premieres and industry events. TikTok has also sparked a new wave of film reviewers whose commentary and festival coverage shape audience perception in real time. Red carpet moments and festival highlights go viral, showcasing the platform's power to drive immediate engagement. Fan engagement is so impactful that today's audiences influence the narrative before a film's release, prompting studios to embrace TikTok-driven storytelling into their marketing strategies. Hollywood's biggest stars are recognizing the influence of the #FilmTok community. In a conversation during Kering's Women In Motion Talks, Nicole Kidman spoke about TikTok's role in helping her film Babygirl find its audience, showing how the platform is shaping modern film discovery and audience connection. As Dawn Yang, TikTok's Global Head of Entertainment Partnerships explained: Together, creators, fans, and stars are reshaping the traditional press cycle, putting TikTok at the center of modern movie buzz. TikTok is putting creators at the center of how stories are told, shared, and experienced, and these creators are helping to shape culture in real time, bridging the gap between audiences and the entertainment industry. Reece Feldman (@guywithamoviecamera on TikTok) is a filmmaker and creator best known for his behind-the-scenes content that offers an insider's look at the film industry. What began as behind-the-scenes on-set videos as a production assistant quickly evolved into red carpet coverage, film festival access, and a growing reputation as a cultural bridge between Hollywood and TikTok. In just a few years, Feldman has become a recognized voice in both the creator space and the film industry, helping define how studios and streaming partners build relevance to a younger, authenticity-seeking audience. TikTok invited Reece to the 78th Cannes Film Festival not only as a creator but as a recognized filmmaker. Closing out the week, Reece premiered his debut short film Wait, Your Car? starring Whitney Peak, Ruby Cruz, Minnie Mills, and Noa Fisher, earning rave reviews. Reece's journey exemplifies TikTok's unique role in shaping modern film culture—where fans become filmmakers, platforms become stages, and creators help rewrite the rules of promotion and storytelling for the next generation. From competition entries to red carpet commentary, and from creator-led panels to official film premieres, the 78th Cannes Film Festival made clear that TikTok is not just capturing the moment, it is helping define the future of entertainment.
