PAU opens training centre for UPSC aspirants
PAU vice-chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal, praised the Punjab Government's initiative to establish such centres across the state. He said the centre at PAU, the first of its kind at the university, would be instrumental in shaping the future of aspiring bureaucrats and scholars. Highlighting the vital contribution of civil servants and agricultural scientists to nation-building, Gosal emphasised that the centre will provide free coaching to meritorious students, especially those from financially weak backgrounds. He added that a dedicated building for the centre is already in the pipeline and students will have full access to PAU's central library and other academic facilities.
Director of students' welfare, Nirmal Jaura, elaborated on the centre's purpose, calling it a step towards equal opportunity in education and public service. He informed the audience that PAU's centre is among eight, recently approved by the Punjab Government to train candidates for top government roles including IAS, IPS, PCS, IRS, and ARS. Jaura noted that a qualifying test, to be conducted by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, will be used to select deserving students, who will also be eligible for scholarships.
Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu, principal of Government SCD College, lauded the initiative as a 'guiding light' for students determined to join civil services. The advisory panel includes top officials like the PAU vice-chancellor, director of higher education, deputy commissioner of Ludhiana, and PAU registrar, while the working committee is headed by Vipan Kumar Rampal with a team of dedicated faculty members.
As part of the inaugural ceremony, two outstanding students were honoured by the vice-chancellor. Parisdeep Aulakh, from the College of Horticulture and Forestry, secured an All-India Rank of 172 in UPSC CAPF 2024. Sourav, an alumnus of the College of Agriculture and now assistant director with MSME, was also recognised for his achievements.
International Day for Biological Diversity celebrated
The department of forestry and natural resources, in collaboration with the NSS unit at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity on June 16. The event was organised under the global theme 'Be Part of the Plan', with the aim to promote environmental awareness.
The ceremony supported by the National Biodiversity Authority through the Punjab Biodiversity Board and the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, drew participation of around 250 students.
The highlight of the day was an expert lecture by Renu Bhardwaj, former professor at Guru Nanak Dev University, on 'How to Sustain Development and Preserve Biodiversity.' Bhardwaj captivated the audience by addressing the urgent need to protect natural resources amid growing environmental challenges like climate change, urban sprawl, and industrialisation.
Chief guest RIS Gill, estate officer, PAU, spoke about the root causes of biodiversity erosion and stressed the importance of its conservation through sustainable practices. The programme also included several interactive student competitions such as poster-making and slogan-writing.
The poster making competition was triumphed by Jasmandeep Kaur, Dhami Kapila, and Mehakpreet Kaur while Tanya Kaur, Arppita Sharma, and Avreet Kaur bagged prizes in slogan writing.
Concluding the event, GPS Dhillon, head of the department, highlighted PAU's commitment to biodiversity conservation, especially through nursery production of traditional tree species.

UP PCS (Main) 2024 begins; papers feature AI, Make in India & startups
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) commenced the Uttar Pradesh Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services (Main) Examination-2024, commonly known as UP PCS (Main)-2024, on Sunday across 34 centers in Prayagraj and Lucknow. Candidates coming out of a centre on Day 1 after appearing in UP PCS (Mains)-2024 in Prayagraj (HT Photo) On the first day, the morning session from 9 am to 12 noon featured the General Hindi paper, followed by the Essay paper from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The Essay paper was divided into three sections, each offering three topics. Candidates were required to write an essay of up to 700 words in Hindi, English, or Urdu on any one topic from each section. Each essay carried 50 marks, according to a candidate. In Section 'A', topics included Human Values and Literature, The Concept of 'New Woman' in India: A Myth, and The Impact of Youth Participation in Nation Building. Section 'B' covered Artificial Intelligence (AI): Opportunities and Challenges, Startups: India's Future, and Technological Innovations and Sustainable Development in Agriculture. Section 'C' included essays on India's Growing Popularity on the International Stage, Global Warming: A Crisis for the Future, and Make in India. The General Hindi paper featured two prose passages worth 30 marks each. Additionally, there was a 10-mark letter-writing task and a 10-mark circular-writing exercise. Candidates were asked to write a letter on behalf of the Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police to the District Police Superintendent, instructing strict measures to curb crime in the district. Another circular was to be written on behalf of the Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, addressing all state governments to enforce a complete ban on prenatal sex determination to support the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign. Other questions in the General Hindi paper included antonyms worth 10 marks, one-word substitutes worth 10 marks, sentence formation and spelling correction worth five marks each, and 30 marks assigned for writing the meanings and usage of ten idioms/proverbs. The main examination will continue with two General Studies papers daily until July 2, totaling six papers. On the first day of the PCS main exam, candidates appeared satisfied with the papers. Most found the General Hindi and Essay papers to be of moderate difficulty. Ankur Gupta from Jaunpur, appearing for the mains for the first time, said the paper was easy and all questions were from the syllabus. Adesh Tripathi from Sultanpur, who has been attempting the mains since 2017, said the paper was good and no section was particularly difficult. First-time mains candidates Amit Agrahari from Jaunpur, Mehak Srivastava from Lucknow, and Sakshi Sonkar from Varanasi also found the paper manageable and said the questions were such that every candidate could answer them comfortably.

UPPSC PCS Mains exam begins across Uttar Pradesh in two shifts
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) PCS Mains Examination began on Sunday, in different phases for thousands of aspirants aiming for Civil Services in the state. In November last year, UPPSC aspirants supported the decision of the state government to conduct the examination in a single day.(PTI) The examination was conducted in two shifts. The first shift started at 9:00 am and continued till 12:00 pm, while the second shift began at 2:30 pm and ended at 5:30 pm. Pankaj Pandey, an aspirant, told ANI, "We had submitted four memoranda earlier, but no decision was made. Following this, we called a major agitation on 11th November. The agitation has continued since then. Students were creating. Finally, the government took cognisance of this and we thank them for this. The government made a decision in our favour. We had two demands, for PCS and for RO/ARO. 100 per cent of demands regarding PCS have been accepted. But there was a little confusion regarding RO/ARO. They then formed a committee for it. When the decision of the committee comes, we will decide our further course of action. As of now, we have called off our protest." Another aspirant, Narendra Tiwari, said that he is "satisfied" with the government's decision."We are satisfied with the decision of the Commission, Administration and Government. One remaining demand, regarding one shift exam for RO/ARO is yet to be received by us. A committee has been formed for it. We hope that the committee will decide in our favour... The students in my area believe that we need not protest there anymore. The protest has been completely called off," he added. Rajkumar Verma, a third aspirant, highlighted that the District Magistrate and the Secretary visited them too."DM and the Secretary came here yesterday. They decided to conduct the PCS exam on one day, and RO/ARO exam has been postponed. They have formed a committee for RO/ARO exam. We will decide the further course of action as per the decision of the committee. The PCS exam is scheduled to be held on 22nd December," he said. Last year, the Commission's release said that the exam will be conducted in two shifts: the first from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and the second from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. "In view of the nature of the Combined State/Senior Subordinate Service Examination, the Commission has decided in principle to conduct it on a single day, as was done earlier," stated the UPPSC in an official statement.
