Detroit Lions training camp medical preview: Linebackers

The linebackers suffered significant casualties last season as well as a surprise offseason surgery. All that along with Alex Anzalone's contract status means there are a lot of uncertainties going forward. The lack of quality, proven depth could be an issue this season if the starters don't stay healthy.
Last season, the Lions kept six LB's on the initial 53-man roster (Anzalone, Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Malcolm Rodriguez, Ben Niemann).
Here is the list of LB's starting with the players with the biggest medical question marks entering the season. Ages are at the start of the season.
#1: Malcolm Rodriguez - 27yo
The ACL isn't a long-term concern, but it will keep Rodriguez out for about half this season. He is entering the final year of his 4-year rookie deal so has a lot of motivation to prove recovery.
As expected, he was placed on PUP at the start of training camp.
Projection: An estimated 11-month recovery would have him return on November 2 vs the Vikings. He may not start looking like his former self until late in the season or 2026 though.
#2: Derrick Barnes - 26yo

An MCL/PCL injury ended his season in Week 3. This offseason, the Lions showed a lot of confidence by giving him a 3-year deal with $16 million guaranteed.
Despite his visible right leg atrophy this offseason and a limited participation at OTA last month, he should be ready for the season. He was not placed on PUP at the start of camp which confirms his readiness.
Projection: Barnes is in the starting lineup for Week 1.
#3: Jack Campbell - 25yo
Campbell has played every game in his two-year NFL career. However during OTA, Campbell revealed that he had a minor hip surgery this offseason. He didn't seem too concerned which is reassuring. In related news, Kerby Joseph had hip surgery the previous offseason and then became an All-Pro.
Campbell was not placed on PUP at the start of camp which confirms that he is ready.
Projection: Campbell starts Week 1 and continues to anchor the middle of the defense.
#4: Alex Anzalone - 30yo

A forearm fracture cost him six games last year, but he was able to return for the final two games. There is no concern with the arm going forward.
He has a history of a chronic right shoulder dating back to college but has been playing through that just fine.
The main question for Anzalone may be his contract status. He was one of only two players who skipped OTA (Ragnow, retired), and there are multiple hints that he is seeking a new or adjusted deal. He has posted many offseason workout videos suggesting he is healthy and ready for the season.

Projection: Even if he holds out all of camp, Anzalone will be a starter in Week 1.
#5: DaRon Gilbert - 24yo
Last year as an undrafted rookie, Gilbert was waived by the Lions in preseason with an unspecified injury designation.
Projection: The lack of young depth means that Gilbert has a shot to make the 53-man roster.
#6: Trevor Nowaske - 26yo
Nowaske had a concussion in practice last season and missed a game. He played a healthy 349 snaps last season for the Lions on defense, and another 284 on special teams.
Projection: He makes the 53-man roster with his experience and youth.
#7: Grant Stuard - 26yo
The Lions signed Stuard as a free agent this offseason. He has been remarkably reliable being available for every game in his 4-year NFL career. He does have a remote history of a torn meniscus which isn't a significant concern in the short-term.
Projection: With a fully-guaranteed, 1-year contract, Stuard will make the 53-man roster.
#8: Anthony Pittman - 28yo
Pittman joined the Lions late last season and appeared in the final three regular season games. He should be healthy going into the season.
Projection: He may compete for a final roster spot.
#9: Ezekiel Turner - 29yo
Turner got 111 snaps last year on defense with the Lions. Most of his snaps (189) came on special teams. He should be healthy going into the season although his age is nearing 30.
Projection: If he makes the team, it will be because of special teams.
#10: Zach Cunningham - 30yo
Last year with the Broncos, he missed a few games with a hamstring but that's not a concern going forward.
Projection: The Lions likely would prefer to stay younger at the LB position.

Steelers legend James Harrison's wild interaction with K Chris Boswell resurfaces

A hilarious and frightening interaction between Steelers kicker Chris Boswell and legend James Harrison has begun to resurface and make waves on social media. The viral story in question is from a January episode of The Christian Kuntz Podcast, where Boswell revealed how his first interactions with Harrison went. "I got to go home for the weekend and come back, and Deebo, my very first practice, stood over the holder," Boswell said. "So the holder's waiting to get a snap, standing over his shoulder, and [James Harrison says], 'I dare you to miss this kick. I dare you to miss it. You miss this kick, you wash my back in the shower.' "Even after, I obviously had a decent season that year, but team meeting room, when I used to go, I would sit here and Deebo would sit here — and he would just stare at me. Mike Tomlin's up there, giving his team presentation, and he's just staring at me like this the entire meeting. Just intimidating." As hilarious as Boswell's retelling of the story was, he admitted that the Steelers' kicking woes likely painted the positional group in a bad light — clearly in the crosshairs of Harrison, where no sane man wants to be. Harrison's intimidation may have helped create one of the best to ever do it, as Boswell has an opportunity to become the most accurate kicker in NFL history this season — just 1.1% behind former Ravens K Justin Tucker's 89.1% all-time record. Is Jared Goff underrated? Lions embracing their ‘not too flashy' QB as offense shifts out of Ben Johnson's hands

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Amon-Ra St. Brown understands the public perception. The wide receiver doesn't agree with it, but he doesn't expect it to change. Jared Goff, the 2016 first overall draft pick whom the Los Angeles Rams would later trade to the Detroit Lions, is underrated. St. Brown believes it. 'I think he's been underrated his whole career and I don't think that'll ever go away,' St. Brown told Yahoo Sports from training camp practice. 'You look at a guy like Josh Allen: He's big, can run, crazy arm strength. You look at a guy like Lamar [Jackson]: fast, one of the best running quarterbacks you've ever seen, does stuff on the field that only he can do. 'You look at Patrick Mahomes: His arm angles, the throws he makes, just unconventional, his ability to win big games.' And Goff? 'You look at a guy like Jared, I mean he's not too flashy,' St. Brown says of his quarterback. 'But he's consistent.' [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Goff's consistency led the Lions to a 15-2, best-in-NFC record last season. The Lions hope Goff's consistency will help them transition from Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator and play-caller the prior three seasons, to now-OC John Morton. They'll hope Goff can maintain consistency even as the quarterback and his linemen re-divide protection calls in the wake of four-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow's retirement. Last year, Goff's consistency proved potent. While he may not have dominated highlight reels to pace Jackson, Allen or Mahomes, Goff did put up numbers that were both his career-best marks and also challenged his counterparts for best in the league. Only Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow topped Goff's 4,629 passing yards, and only Jackson surpassed his 111.8 passer rating. Goff's 37 total touchdown passes ranked fourth overall, while his 54.7% success rate (a metric that awards players who on first down gain at least 40% of yards to go; on second at least 60%; and on third and fourth 100%) was best in the league. 'The game has slowed down for him, from a protection standpoint,' Morton told Yahoo Sports. 'Being in Year 3 in the offense, you should be hitting on all cylinders, and that's what he was doing last year.' Under Morton, the goal is to recapture that magic. Morton returns to the staff he served on in 2022 looking to accentuate his players' matchups and skill sets, with extra emphasis on teaching the offense from the quarterback's perspective. Morton wants all of his offensive players to learn the quarterback responsibilities even if they won't all have to act on that knowledge. He wants skill players to understand when they're facing man defense and when it's zone; when to anticipate one high safety and when it's two. 'Not every receiver can do that, but the great ones I've been around — they see it just like the quarterback,' Morton said. 'The game slows down for them and they play free.' That quarterback perspective, paired with technician-level routes, have helped make St. Brown 'trustworthy' to Goff, Morton said. [Get more Lions news: Detroit team feed] Morton is implementing his wrinkles into the game plan while offensive line coach Hank Fraley continues to carry run game coordinator responsibilities. How will the two backgrounds mesh? 'In Johnny's background, he likes to throw the ball,' left tackle Taylor Decker told Yahoo Sports. 'That's kind of what the league has been going toward recently. But us, the Lions, we run the ball a lot. We run the ball a lot on third down, third-and-long. We go for it on fourth down a lot. So we have that luxury. 'I think the bulk of what you're going to see that's different with him is his pass-game route concepts. But still there are things that we've been good at here.' Things at which the Lions have been good and Goff has been good. Lions teammates and coaches look at Goff and, in some ways, believe in him for the same reasons others don't. That unassuming, unflappable, not-spectacular-to-a-point-that's-almost-spectacular quarterback of theirs? 'He is a superstar, but he's not a diva,' Decker said. 'And I say that endearingly, in a positive light: He's just like a regular guy.' And one destined, the Lions believe, to be perpetually underrated. A club that leans into its underdog mentality wouldn't have it any other way. 'I feel like he's always going to be underrated no matter what he does,' St. Brown said. 'Even if he wins the Super Bowl MVP, there's still going to be people saying stuff. 'I think that's what gets him going. And I love that for him.'

Bears' Ryan Poles reveals jarring injury update on Jaylon Johnson

The Chicago Bears have been widely regarded as one of the biggest winners of this offseason. The front office, led by general manager Ryan Poles, has given quarterback Caleb Williams a formidable supporting cast while hiring former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach. It's not going to be easy for Chicago, which has, on paper, one of the most demanding schedules in the NFL, but the vibes are high so far in training camp. Poles, however, did give an eye-opening update on an offseason leg injury suffered by one of the Bears most important defenders, Jaylon Johnson. senior writer Larry Mayer revealed Poles' statement on the two-time Pro Bowler's health status after Day 1 of training camp. "It is going to take a few weeks before he can come back," Poles said. "We've got a lot of faith that he's going to put in the time to rehab and be his full self when he comes back. It's going to take a little bit of time, but (I'm) not overly concerned about long-term." The Bears will open up the season with two divisional clashes against the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, with the opening matchup taking place on Monday Night Football. Those two games will go a long way toward indicating whether the hype built over this offseason is real or if this roster is far from contending for a playoff spot. Getting Johnson to 100% by September 8 is one of top priorities for this franchise as it heads into one of its most anticipated seasons of the past decade.
