Kings Park pool R42 million upgrades on track
The 100-year-old pool, which has been closed since November 2024, is receiving a full revamp in two stages.
Project lead Zakhi Mkhize from the municipality says Phase One – focused on emergency repairs following storm damage earlier this year – will conclude by the end of July.
'Phase Two starts now and will run for a full year, until June [2026]. This includes not only structural work but a facelift to enhance the architectural and aesthetic appeal,' said Mkhize.
She added that upgrades would also address compliance and safety issues, including projection and water level regulations, to ensure the facility meets modern standards.
Kings Park Pool is located in a vital sport tourism hub, adjacent to landmarks such as Moses Mabhida Stadium and Durban Country Club.
The area is known as Durban's 'sports precinct', hosting both international and local sporting events.
'This facility is one of a kind. Its revival will complement the city's sports infrastructure and help draw tourism, while providing a high-quality public space for recreation and training,' Mkhize said.
Municipal officials have committed to strict maintenance planning once the upgrade is completed, aiming to prevent further costly refurbishments in the future.
Locals and athletes alike are eagerly awaiting the reopening of the revamped pool, which has long been a favourite venue for competitive swimming and community recreation in the city.

Orlando Pirates top striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set himself a target in the first half of the 2025/26 season. Don strikes late as Boland sink Cheetahs in 88-minute Currie Cup thriller
Donavan Don scored in the dying moments to hand the Boland Cavaliers a dramatic 37-35 win over the Cheetahs in Wellington. Boland dominated early proceedings, smashing into contact and putting pressure on the Cheetahs at scrum time and the breakdown. Fullback James Tedder slotted two penalties to reward Boland's pressure and maintain the scoreboard pressure against an unsettled Cheetahs side. Ashlon Davids finished a flowing move to score the opening try, with Tedder's conversion pushing Boland into a 13–0 lead. The Cheetahs were punished for sloppy restarts and lineout errors as Boland enjoyed almost complete control in the first quarter. Hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg pounced on an overthrow to grab Free State's first try and shift momentum toward the visitors. Scrumhalf Rewan Kruger darted through a gap to score and give the Cheetahs a 14–13 lead midway through the half. Boland retained the restart and launched wave after wave of attacks against a desperate Cheetahs defence in added time. Cheetahs tackled bravely but couldn't clear their lines or force a turnover during nearly eight minutes of extra time. Eventually, Donavon Don found space and sprinted clear to score the match-winning try and spark wild celebrations in Wellington. It was a moment of composure, precision and pace as Don read the defence perfectly and finished under heavy pressure. 'Third floor': Ox Nche celebrates his 30th birthday in style
Springbok Ox Nche celebrated his 30th birthday in style in his hometown of Bloemfontein this weekend. The popular player is known for his love of cake and for being one of rugby's best loosehead props in the world.
