Ministers tried to downplay incident, say oppn leaders
The irresponsible behaviour of ministers led to D Bindu's death, said opposition leader V D Satheesan at Thalayolaparambu on Friday.
Satheesan said the ministers' remarks that the building was closed and no one was inside hindered the rescue operation.
"Normally, if a hospital building collapses, govt should provide adequate compensation. But in this case, since the rescue operation was hampered by the ministers, govt has more responsibility," he said.
He demanded that govt provide compensation of not less than Rs 25 lakh to the family of Bindu, who was killed in the building collapse, and to undertake her daughter's treatment and offer a job to a family member.
Satheeshan said health minister Veena George was incapable of continuing in the position as medical colleges and other hospitals in govt sector were facing shortages of medicines and other materials for treatments.
KPCC president Sunny Joseph, who visited the MCH and Bindu's house on Friday, termed her death as a "murder" alleging attempts by ministers George and V N Vasavan to downplay the incident. He said the ministers' eagerness to justify themselves following the incident resulted in the loss of life.

He added that Congress would strengthen its protest to save the health sector. "The first phase was protests in front of medical colleges. The second phase of protests will be held in front of taluk district hospitals on July 8," Joseph said.
Meanwhile, Puthuppally MLA Oommen on Friday announced a financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to Bindu's family from Oommen Chandy Foundation. Oommen had reached the spot soon after the incident on Thursday.
IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty said George should take moral responsibility for Bindu's death, accusing the minister of having handled the situation irresponsibly. In Malappuram, Kunhalikutty said, "It is not the minister's job to simply echo what officials say. Her response was extremely irresponsible. That is why UDF has demanded her resignation on moral grounds."
Muslim Youth League activists took out a march from Vadakke Bus Stand area to the DMO office in Thrissur. Police erected barricades but the protesters tried to push the barricades and proceed to the DMO office, led to tense moments. Police then used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

'This is sick': Jewish advocacy group slams Zohran Mamdani for sharing video mocking Hanukkah
Zohran Mamdani has been accused of mocking Hannukah. Stop Antisemitism, the Jewish advocacy group, blasted Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani for sharing a video mocking Hanukkah. The video was shared last year but it went viral as Mamdani is dominating headlines after his surprise victory in the primary. Some false claims were made over the video saying Mamdani, who was a rapper before his plunge into politics, was featured in the video. But he was not in the video and shared it on Hanukkah. Mamdani had posted the video in December 2024, adding the caption, "Happy 3rd night of Hanukkah from Astoria and Long Island City." The video originates from the 2015 parody album "Punjabi Christmas Album Hits" from the Geeta Brothers, a side project of Sikh-Canadian musician and comedian Jus Reign. Mamdani posted another video from the same album on Christmas Eve, this one based on "Jingle Bells." "Wishing you all a very merry Christmas from Astoria and Long Island City," he wrote at the time. — StopAntisemites (@StopAntisemites) "Zohran Mamdani posts Indian men cosplaying Jews, spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah," Stop Antisemitism wrote in a statement on X. "Our holidays and traditions are sacred and not for your comedic pleasure, Zohran Mamdani – this is sick," the group added, tagging the mayoral candidate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Mamdani has been accused of antisemitism during his campaign as well as he refused several times to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state. During a primary debate, he said he believed Israel has a right to exist. "As a Jewish state?" he was asked. "As a state with equal rights," Mamdani said. "I'm not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else," he explained later. StopAntisemitism founder Liora Rez said last week that electing Mamdani mayor would not only be "catastrophic" for Jewish residents, but all who reside in the city. "If Zohran Mamdani was elected as mayor, it would be hands down catastrophic for Jewish residents of New York City," Rez said. "And we would even take it a step further where citizens of New York City in general, due to his very troubling stances on socialism, would greatly suffer as well."

LJP (RV) chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan to contest upcoming Bihar polls
Earlier today, Paswan had carried out the 'Nav-Sankalp Mahasabha' from Chhapra to Nav Bihar, starting at the Rajendra Stadium in Chhapra. He said, 'Today, from this sacred land of Saran, I am declaring before all of you that yes, I will contest the election. I will contest the election for the people of Bihar, for my brothers, for my mothers, for my sisters, and we will create a system in Bihar, we will build a Bihar that will truly take the state forward on the path of development.' While hitting out at the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over comprising the development of the state, he added, 'In the coming days, regarding the inheritance tax, the way Congress, RJD, and all their allies think about taxing the property that belongs to you generation after generation. The people who talk about development in Bihar today are the same opposition leaders who had ruined Bihar in the 90.' However, the Union Minister, while reacting over the murder of businessman Gopal Khema, expressed worry over the 'rising crime' and the 'collapse of law and order' in the state, and urged for putting pressure on the state government to bring the perpetrators to justice. 'It is a matter of worry the way crime has risen and law and order has collapsed in Bihar. If such an incident has happened in a posh locality of Patna, then we can only imagine what is happening in villages. It is worrying to see such incidents occur under a government that was known for good governance; then the opposition will have a chance to speak up. Strict action needs to be taken to set a precedent so that such a thing is not repeated,' Paswan told mediapersons here. On July 4, businessman Gopal Khemka was allegedly shot dead near his residence in the south area of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Following the incident, Bihar Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the murder case. The murder has evoked sharp political reactions from the opposition parties and put the spotlight back on the law and order situation in the state. LJP (Ram Vilas) is part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with Janata Dal (United) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). LJP is expected to keep on allying with the NDA for the upcoming Bihar polls, however Paswan has not yet confirmed his stance on it. (ANI) This report is auto-generated from ANI news service.
