Resurgence of India rate-cut wagers revives foreign investor interest in bonds
Foreign investors are showing renewed interest in Indian government bonds, driven by expectations of an upcoming rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India as early as August. Subdued inflation and persistent growth concerns are fueling these expectations. Over the past month, foreign investors have net purchased 129 billion rupees in Indian bonds.

The RBI could implement a modest 25 basis point cut in August if inflation remains subdued and growth concerns persist, said Singapore-based Manish Bhargava, CEO of Straits Investment Management, adding that
bond yields
are attractive at current levels.
Over the last one month, foreign investors have net bought 129 billion rupees ($1.5 billion) of Indian bonds linked to global indexes after selling more than 330 billion rupees in the first two-and-a-half months of the financial year that started on April 1, clearing house data showed.

Analysts said concerns on the growth front are also likely to prompt the central bank to lower rates further.
With recent high-frequency data disappointing and indicating the possibility of a further slowdown in growth, "there is potential for more support from the RBI further down the line," said London-based Giulia Pellegrini, lead portfolio manager, emerging market debt at AllianzGI.
India's overall economic fundamentals remain solid, keeping the country on investors' radar, she said.
A wider gap between interest rates in India and the U.S. would add to the appeal of Indian debt, investors said.
That's why a Federal Reserve rate cut could act as a positive catalyst for Indian bonds, as they have historically helped local currency debt markets, said Nigel Foo, Singapore-based head of Asian fixed income at First Sentier Investors.
However, current Indian bond yields are lower than where they were in the past at similar policy rate levels, and so are relatively unattractive, he added.
The 10-year U.S. yield was around 4.35%, with the Fed expected to cut rates by at least 50 bps in 2025. The Indian 10-year benchmark bond yield was at 6.30%.
"India's local debt story remains very compelling on both FX and rates," said Jean‑Charles Sambor, head of emerging markets debt at TT International Asset Management in London, who expects bond yields to decline through this year and next, and finds the middle of the yield curve attractive.

Wildlife board shoots down ethanol plant near tiger corridor

Hyderabad: The Telangana Board for Wildlife has rejected a proposal for a grain-based ethanol plant and 3 MW power unit at Metpalle village in Kagaznagar mandal in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, citing its proximity to a key tiger corridor and concerns raised by locals and forest officials. Promoted by Aithanoli Cibus Products, the 38-acre project site lies just 30 metres from the reserve forest (Asifabad Range, Garlapet block) and 64 metres from the eastern forest boundary (Gondi beat of Kagaznagar Range, Garlapet Extension IV). Although the land is technically revenue terrain outside notified forest area, it abuts the Kagaznagar forest division, a landscape increasingly recognised for tiger movement and breeding. Forest officials underlined the risks, pointing out that the corridor is regularly used by leopards and tigers. "The project is located very close to the tiger corridor and uses a lot of water and also discharges effluents and poses a threat to tigers and other wildlife," an official said. Importantly, even though the company managed to secure environmental clearance and forest clearance, the project still requires mandatory wildlife approval under section 38(I)(g) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 — applicable to all projects in or near tiger reserves and wildlife corridors. 6 other projects get nod The board, which met on Monday, however, approved six other proposals. Four involved laying of optical fibre cables (OFCs). A forest official clarified: "Wherever there is already an existing right of way, we have cleared the proposals for OFCs. When there is no right of way, we have cleared but forwarded to the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for further clearance." Additionally, the board okayed the improvement of an existing road in the Pakal Wildlife Sanctuary in Mahabubabad district and gave in-principle approval for setting up a hospital on two acres inside the sanctuary, the latter subject to clearance by the NBWL.

Less than 15% of youth skilled under government scheme placed

. NEW DELHI: As unemployment continues to be a concern, government data shows that over 1.6 crore youth across India have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) since 2015, though only about 24.3 lakh secured job placements - less than 15% of the total youth trained. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, skill development minister Jayant Chaudhary said that while placement tracking was done under the first three phases of PMKVY (2015-2022), the current phase (PMKVY 4.0) focuses more on empowering candidates to pursue varied career paths and provides orientation support through platforms like Skill India Digital Hub. The platform connects trained individuals with potential employers and apprenticeship opportunities, with Rozgar Melas and National Apprenticeship Melas providing additional placement support. However, employment outcomes remain modest. Of the 56.89 lakh certified candidates in Short-Term Training (STT) between 2015 and 2022, only 24.3 lakh were reported placed - around 43%. Analysts say the low employment ratio reflects a continued gap between training curricula and industry requirements. The government acknowledged the need to align skilling with local demand and industry trends and has started district-level skill gap studies and state-specific training programmes. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh lead in both training enrolment and loan assistance. Efforts to improve quality outcomes include training through accredited centres, on-the-job training, the National Credit Framework, and regular third-party evaluations. A third-party assessment of PMKVY 4.0 is currently underway to guide policy corrections. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
