Nine Puzzles delivers gripping psychological thriller
psychological crime series directed by Yoon Jong-bin and penned by Lee Eun-mi. This 11-episode thriller packages emotional trauma, criminal profiling and unresolved mysteries into a layered narrative that keeps viewers guessing.
At the centre of the story is Yoon E-na, played with haunting intensity by Kim Da-mi. As a teenager, E-na stumbled upon the lifeless body of her beloved uncle with a single puzzle piece ominously left at the crime scene. Although the case never led to charges, E-na became the prime suspect in the eyes of detective Kim Han-saem (Son Suk-ku). The stigma stuck and the case went cold but the emotional scars remained.
Years later, E-na has transformed into a profiler for the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, working to understand the minds of criminals while struggling with her own unresolved trauma. When a new murder emerges with disturbingly similar characteristics to her uncle's case, E-na is forced to reopen old wounds. She is also made to partner with Han-saem, the very man who once believed she was a killer.
Their dynamic is at the core of the drama. Da-mi portrays E-na with restrained fury and calculated calm, while Son delivers a subtle performance as a detective grappling with guilt, doubt and professional duty. Their uneasy alliance is less about redemption and more about recognition of each other's pain and shared obsession with the truth.
Visually, Nine Puzzles leans into darkness. Jong-bin's direction favours long silences, dim lighting
and slow reveals, crafting an atmosphere that is as unsettling as it is intriguing. Composer Jo Yeong-wook, known for his work on Oldboy and The Handmaiden, heightens the mood with a
chilling score that creeps in at the right moments.
The pacing is slow in the first few episodes, but purposefully so. Each scene, line of dialogue and expression is loaded with significance. What might feel like a lull is actually the show laying down the emotional groundwork for the twists and turns that follow. Viewers who stick with it will find themselves rewarded with a thriller that values psychological realism over flashy dramatics.
Supporting performances from Kim Sung-kyun and Hyeon Bong-sik add balance and weight to the cast, helping ground the series in procedural reality while E-na and Han-saem pursue a more personal kind of justice.
With just enough questions answered and more still unresolved, the first half sets the stage for an intense escalation.
Nine Puzzles is now streaming on Disney+. The final two episodes will air this Wednesday.

#SHOWBIZ: Cha Eun-woo covers Demon Hunters song 'Free' with movie's lead actress
SEOUL: The wait is over for fans eager to hear the collaboration between South Korean singer-actor Cha Eun-woo and American actress Arden Cho. On July 27, Netflix released a video of their duet for the song 'Free' from the streaming platform's hit animated movie 'KPop Demon Hunters' (2025). The film follows the members of Huntrix, a fictional K-pop girl group, as they battle to save the world from soul-stealing demons, all while competing with Saja Boys, a fictional K-pop boy band from the demon world. "This cover of Free by Huntrix has officially pierced my heart," Netflix posted on Instagram, extending thanks to the two stars. In the film, the romantic ballad is sung by the characters Rumi, the leader and lead vocalist of Huntrix, and Jinu, the leader of Saja Boys. Cho, best known for her roles in the American supernatural series 'Teen Wolf' (2011 to 2017) and the legal drama 'Partner Track' (2022), voices Rumi, with Korean-American singer Ejae providing the character's singing voice. Jinu is voiced by Canadian actor Ahn Hyo-seop, and South Korean singer Andrew Choi provides his singing voice. K-drama idol Cha was reportedly the inspiration behind Jinu. Cho, 39, also posted a video on her Instagram and YouTube channel on July 26, showing her chatting with Cha, 28 – a member of K-pop boy band Astro – about their duet. He is set to begin his mandatory military service on July 28. "I'm here with one of my awesome 'dongsaeng' (Korean for younger sibling or friend)," she said. Cha mentioned they were introduced about five years ago by a South Korean producer who worked on some of his shows. He has starred in K-dramas such as 'My ID Is Gangnam Beauty' (2018), 'Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung' (2019), and 'True Beauty' (2020 to 2021). "When I was in America, she introduced me to a lot of cafés and restaurants," Cha said of Cho. Cho remarked that Cha resembles Jinu, adding: "And I thought it'd be really fun and special if we did a collaboration." Cha also said that Cho resembles Rumi, a sentiment shared by many of his celebrity friends in South Korea. "We were texting about 'KPop Demon Hunters', and when we were talking about the movie, I mentioned I was coming to Korea to do some press," Cho explained. "We were like, wouldn't it be fun if we covered it?" Cha stated he loves all the songs from the movie, especially 'Free'. Cho added that her fiancé is a huge fan of Cha's. She announced her engagement on social media in April without revealing his name.

(Video) Colgate Malaysia Teases Collaboration With K-pop Icon IU; Is She Coming To KL?
These brands do love to tease fans when it comes to collaborations with Korean stars – not that we're complaining, of course. Recently, several companies have been teasing their partnerships with idol groups and actors ahead of official announcements to build excitement. These promotions are clearly doing the trick, as fans are almost always able to guess the mystery collaborators based on nothing more than a silhouette. And now, it seems one singer could be making her way to Malaysia very soon. Who is she? Let's find out. Over the weekend, oral hygiene brand Colgate Malaysia posted a video on social media teasing a future collaboration with a K-pop icon. The clip featured a female singer dressed in purple, posing for the cameras with her face obscured, revealing only her smile. 'The queen of K-pop is about to spill her secret beauty hack for a radiant smile 😁✨ Any guesses? Coming your way soon. Stay tuned!' the brand wrote in the captions. If the smile wasn't already a clear giveaway, the hint 'Queen of K-pop' certainly is, as there's only one person known by that title. As expected, fans flocked to the comments section to share their guesses, but the majority had one name in mind: none other than IU (아이유). Not only is she celebrated as a gifted singer-songwriter, but she's also an accomplished actress, having recently won Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Series Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards for her role in 'When Life Gives You Tangerines'. While Colgate Malaysia's teaser is certainly exciting, there has been no confirmation or indication, at the time of writing, that IU will be making a special appearance in Malaysia. Still, that hasn't stopped fans from urging the brand to invite the icon back to Malaysia for an event. The last time IU was here, she performed at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil back in 2024 and even handed out snacks to fans upon her arrival at KLIA. We personally would love to see IU again, but for now, we'll have to wait for the official announcements for more details about this collaboration. Watch the teaser below: Source: Instagram
