Digha temple aimed only at revenue, says Shankaracharya
Addressing mediapersons at Puri on Thursday, he said the Digha temple is aimed at revenue and has nothing to do with devotion for Lord Jagannath.
'Mamata Banerjee has built the temple at Digha to retain the lakhs of devotees from West Bengal who visit Srimandir in Puri throughout the year. This is not about religious sentiments but for revenue generation. Many devotees from West Bengal visit Puri. She has built the temple in Digha keeping this in mind,' he said.
The Shankaracharya further said that while lakhs of devotees come to Puri round the year, their number multiplies during Snana Purnima, Nabajaubana Besha, Rath Yatra, Bahuda and Suna Besha rituals.
Rath Yatra will be celebrated at the Digha Jagannath Temple for the first time this year.
'This will boost the local trade but will not address the thirst of devotion of Lord Jagannath's devotees,' the seer said.

As the Trinamool Congress on Sunday launched its Bhasha Andolan campaign over detention and deportation of Bangla-speaking migrants in several states of the country, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to lead a protest march in Birbhum town on Monday. The march will commence from the Tourist Lodge intersection and conclude at the Jambooni bus stand, followed by the chief minister's speech. On Sunday, she reiterated her charge against the BJP of unleashing a regime of 'linguistic terror' on Bengalis in the country, claiming that members of a migrant family were beaten up by the police in Delhi. Banerjee had last Monday accused the BJP of unleashing 'linguistic terrorism' on Bengalis, asserting that the fight for identity and language will continue until BJP is defeated. Speaking at the TMC's annual Martyrs' Day rally, she had announced that from Sunday, a movement would start in West Bengal to protest against 'attacks on Bengalis, the Bengali language and linguistic terrorism'. Marches were organised in Bhawanipore and Sealdah in Kolkata and elsewhere in Chuchura, Bankura, Birbhum, Cooch Behar by TMC workers, who held placards highlighting 'harassment and persecution' of the migrant workers in Assam, Odisha, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Maharashtra by the police in those states. TMC MLA Asim Majumdar led the rally at Khadina More in Chuchura, where he asserted that the 'double-engine governments' in those BJP-ruled states were 'deliberately harassing' Bengali-speaking migrants despite producing documents like Aadhaar cards and Voter ID cards. 'As stated by our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, we have started this 'language movement' from today, which will hit the streets every weekend till the middle of August in the run-up to Independence Day. We will not take the persecution of Bengalis lightly,' he asserted. TMC leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha led another march at Dinhata in Cooch Behar, vowing to resist the 'attempt by the BJP to strike off names of legitimate voters from voter lists, and send Indian citizens from Bengal to detention camps for electoral gains'. Kolkata July 27 (UNI): A migrant worker's wife and young son, who had travelled from West Bengal to Delhi in search of work, were allegedly assaulted by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested against the incident by posting a video on social media. Launching an attack against the BJP-led Central Government and the ruling party in Delhi, she wrote, "Even a child is not spared from linguistic terrorism." In the video shared by the Chief Minister, a young man is seen showing injury marks on his young son's body, saying, "Look what they have done to my son. The police beat him and injured his forehead." He is also heard alleging in the video that all their essential belongings were thrown away. The man's wife also appears in the video. Mamata launches ‘language movement', condemns targeting of migrant's family in Delhi
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the targeting of a migrant's family in Delhi on the day her party launched a 'language movement' to protest against the targeting of migrants from the State in BJP-ruled States. Ms. Banerjee wanted to know, 'where are they [BJP led government] taking the country now?' On Sunday (July 27, 2025), protest marches were organised across the State in line with plans announced by the Trinamool Congress chairperson. Ms. Banerjee had on July 21, at a Martyrs Day rally, announced the start of a 'language movement' against the targeting of migrants in the BJP-ruled States. The Chief Minister had called for protests every weekend till the next year's Assembly polls. Language movement From the streets of Kolkata to districts across the State, hundreds of people participated in the protests which the Trinamool has described as a 'language movement.' Some protesters also held posters highlighting the Bengali alphabet implying that BJP-ruled States are targeting migrants for speaking in Bengali. Migrants from West Bengal have been detained in different States like Odisha, Haryana and Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Some migrants from West Bengal have also been pushed into Bangladesh. The Trinamool Congress chairperson has claimed that there is a directive issued by Ministry of Home Affairs to detain migrants and so far about 1,000 workers from the State has been detained in BJP ruled states. Along with the protests against migrants the Trinamool Congress has also raised concerns about the possibility of a SIR (Special Incentive Revision). 'The protest against SIR isn't just a reaction, it's a rejection of @BJP4India's plan to introduce the NRC through the backdoor! BJP is targeting poor, marginalised citizens with illegal notices, beyond their jurisdiction. It's a calculated attack on Bengal's identity, a violation of constitutional rights, and a war on the powerless,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted from its official handle, adding, 'We will defend every voice they're trying to erase!'
