Mize, Torkelson lead Tigers to 1-0 win over Guardians
CLEVELAND (AP) — Casey Mize threw seven innings of four-hit ball, Spencer Torkelson homered and the Detroit Tigers dealt the Cleveland Guardians their ninth straight loss, 1-0 on Saturday night.
It is the fifth time during the Guardians' skid they have not scored a run. It was the 11th time this season they have been shut out, tied with Pittsburgh for most in the majors.
It is the third time Mize (9-2) has gone seven innings in 15 starts this season. The right-hander walked two and struck out four as he won for the third time in his last four starts. He threw 102 pitches, only the fourth time in five big league seasons he has reached the century mark.
Tommy Kahnle worked the ninth for his ninth save.
Detroit was held to two hits by four Cleveland pitchers. Torkelson's 20th homer of the season to lead off the second inning was enough, though.
Torkelson drove a fastball from starter Logan Allen (5-7) just over the wall in right-center. It is the first time since 1993 that two Detroit players have hit at least 20 homers before the All-Star break. Riley Greene leads Detroit with 21.
Allen allowed one run on two hits in six innings. The left-hander retired the last sevenhitters he faced.
It was Detroit's 10th shutout, tied for second-most. Key moment
Detroit All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres left the game in the middle of the first inning after he took an elbow to the head while sliding into second base. Key stat
Cleveland has a .165 batting average since its skid started on June 26. It is 4 for 44 with runners in scoring position, including 0 for 5 on Saturday. Up next
Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal (10-2, 2.15 ERA) looks to win his sixth straight start. Cleveland goes with right-hander Gavin Williams (5-4, 3.86), who is 0-1 in his last five starts.

He's back! 41-year-old reliever Jesse Chavez returns again for his seventh stint with Braves
Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Jesse Chavez has returned yet again for his seventh stint with the Atlanta Braves, including his second this season. The Braves added the 41-year-old reliever to their major league roster before Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. It is the sixth move to add the veteran right-hander to Atlanta's roster since 2021 and the seventh overall since 2009. Chavez allowed two runs in three innings in his first stint with the Braves this season after being called up on April 1. He was released a few days later and granted free agency before re-signing with the team. The Braves optioned left-hander Dylan Dodd to Triple-A Gwinnett and transferred right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach to the 60-day injured list. Schwellenbach was placed on the injured list on Wednesday with a fractured right elbow, possibly ending his season. The loss of Schwellenbach led the Braves to use seven pitchers, including Dodd, in a bullpen game in Saturday's 9-6 loss to Baltimore in 10 innings. That prompted the move to add Chavez for pitching depth in Sunday's final game of the series. Chavez first joined the Braves in December 2009 in a trade with Tampa Bay for reliever Rafael Soriano. He played on Atlanta's 2021 World Series championship team after signing a minor league deal. Chavez made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 2008 and has pitched for nine teams in 18 seasons, including multiple stints with Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Barry Sanders, Amon-Ra St. Brown among Lions cited as best picks ever in their draft slots
Doing a full, seven-round mock draft each year is a grueling exercise in and of itself. The exercise recently undertaken by Ben Solak of ESPN takes that to a new level altogether. Solak recently went through and gave his picks for the best draft pick at every draft slot all-time. That's going through every selection through the years, going from 1-262. Knowing that, it's almost expected that at least one Detroit Lions player would find himself on this list. Indeed, there are a few on this list, including a current star on the offense in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown as the best pick ever at slot No. 121. But the big one, as should almost be expected, is the great Barry Sanders at No. 3 overall. Solak does admit this was a challenging one for him as two Hall of Fame offensive linemen, Anthony Munoz and Joe Thomas, were also selected third overall. In the end, Solak goes with the Lions legend. 'The pick at No. 3 was one of the most challenging of the early selections. Both Anthony Munoz and Joe Thomas are Hall of Famers for their longevity -- not just for career length but also for sticking it out with one squad (mostly). Sanders, in comparison, retired earlier than some expected and could have cleared Walter Payton's career rushing record had he kept it chugging (he finished with 15,269 yards, 1,457 behind Payton). 'I gave the edge to Sanders for his stylistic impact on the game and his lasting impact on Detroit football; he is still the best Lion in history, whereas neither Munoz nor Thomas is the best Bengal or Brown, respectively. But this was close.' One more current Lion made this list, that being safety Kerby Joseph at pick No. 97. 'Joseph is the most recently-drafted player on our list thus far, but what do you want from me -- the competition is not steep. Joseph just led the league in interceptions (nine) and got first-team All-Pro recognition. So long as he gets another All-Pro nod, he's almost certainly the best player taken with pick No. 97.' There were a few players who played a late-career year or two in Detroit who made the list too, guys like Adrian Peterson, Pat Swilling and Anquan Boldin.
