Barry Sanders, Amon-Ra St. Brown among Lions cited as best picks ever in their draft slots
Solak recently went through and gave his picks for the best draft pick at every draft slot all-time. That's going through every selection through the years, going from 1-262.
Knowing that, it's almost expected that at least one Detroit Lions player would find himself on this list. Indeed, there are a few on this list, including a current star on the offense in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown as the best pick ever at slot No. 121.
But the big one, as should almost be expected, is the great Barry Sanders at No. 3 overall. Solak does admit this was a challenging one for him as two Hall of Fame offensive linemen, Anthony Munoz and Joe Thomas, were also selected third overall. In the end, Solak goes with the Lions legend.
'The pick at No. 3 was one of the most challenging of the early selections. Both Anthony Munoz and Joe Thomas are Hall of Famers for their longevity -- not just for career length but also for sticking it out with one squad (mostly). Sanders, in comparison, retired earlier than some expected and could have cleared Walter Payton's career rushing record had he kept it chugging (he finished with 15,269 yards, 1,457 behind Payton).
'I gave the edge to Sanders for his stylistic impact on the game and his lasting impact on Detroit football; he is still the best Lion in history, whereas neither Munoz nor Thomas is the best Bengal or Brown, respectively. But this was close.'
One more current Lion made this list, that being safety Kerby Joseph at pick No. 97.
'Joseph is the most recently-drafted player on our list thus far, but what do you want from me -- the competition is not steep. Joseph just led the league in interceptions (nine) and got first-team All-Pro recognition. So long as he gets another All-Pro nod, he's almost certainly the best player taken with pick No. 97.'
There were a few players who played a late-career year or two in Detroit who made the list too, guys like Adrian Peterson, Pat Swilling and Anquan Boldin.

ESPN thinks this Oklahoma player could be a sleeper this year
The Oklahoma Sooners are in desperate need of a bounce-back campaign in 2025. A dismal offensive showing in OU's first season in the SEC led to a 6-7 overall record and a 2-6 mark in conference play. One of the many reasons that Oklahoma had so much trouble moving the ball on offense was the wide receiver play. OU's top five projected receivers missed all or most of the 2024 season due to injury. That forced backups and true freshmen to step into roles they weren't ready for, and the Oklahoma passing game crumbled. Wide receiver certainly wasn't the only problem on an offense full of them, but it's an area that has to improve along with the rest of the offense in 2025. ESPN believes there's a player at this position on the Sooners roster who isa bit under the radar that can help OU right the ship. A handful of ESPN's college football writers identified sleeper players for each of their preseason top 25 teams. For Oklahoma, who came in at No. 25 in the rankings, they chose sophomore wide receiver Zion Kearney. The Sooners were besieged with injuries at the receiver position last season, and some of their more talented pass catchers hit the transfer portal, including Nic Anderson. With new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and his Air Raid offense coming to Norman, that means Oklahoma will utilize even more receivers. Kearney, a true sophomore, has a chance to make a big jump after playing as a backup in 11 games as a freshman. He has the size (6-1, 207 pounds) and speed (4.28 40-yard dash in high school) to be a staple in the Sooners' passing game, especially with John Mateer stepping in at quarterback. - Chris Low, ESPN. Kearney wasn't ready to play the kind of snaps he did in 2024, but all of that experience is a good learning opportunity for him. The Sooners and wide receivers coach Emmett Jones remade the position group in the transfer portal this offseason, and Kearney was one of a handful of players who decided to stick around in Norman. Kearney also had a nice performance in OU's Armed Forces Bowl loss against Navy. He posted his most receiving yards of the season and his only career touchdown on a scramble drill play from Michael Hawkins Jr. He also managed four catches against Texas back in October. With a lot of question marks and some lingering injury concerns for OU's wide receiver group heading into fall camp, Kearney could be a surprise player to watch in his second season as a Sooner. (AP Photo/Erin Hooley) CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot Sunday before Cleveland faced the Detroit Tigers. The move is retroactive to Saturday. Infielder Will Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Columbus Advertisement Thomas also missed 11 games in late May and early June because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Manager Stephen Vogt said before the game that next week's All-Star break should hopefully also give Thomas plenty of time to rest up for the second half of the season. 'With eight days until the break, we're not in a position to play short right now and wait day to day. And we want to give this the 13-14 days that we have from now until we come out of the end of the break to really try and knock it out.' Thomas hit a grand slam in last year's fifth and deciding game of the American League Division Series against Detroit, but his tenure in Cleveland has been mostly frustrating. Since being acquired at the trade deadline last year from Washington, Thomas has a .189 batting average in 92 games. This season, Thomas is batting .160 and .197 (13 for 66) since coming off the injured list on June 9. Advertisement Thomas also missed five weeks because of a right wrist bone bruise after getting hit by a pitch during the April 8 home opener against the Chicago White Sox. 'It's been a frustrating year for Lane. We feel it with him. It's not at all what we want for him. Not at all what he wants,' Vogt said.
