Coleman opens up on injury-hit season and a surprising effect of Moyes return

Seamus Coleman's season was summed up by last weekend's Goodison Park farewell - when his big moment, captaining the team for their final Premier League game at the historic ground, ended after just 18 minutes.
The Everton and Ireland skipper has managed less than 300 minutes in all competitions this season, across five Premier League games and one League Cup clash.
And on the international front, his performance in Heimir Hallgrímsson's debut as Ireland manager - a 2-0 defeat at home to England - ended after he injured himself while challenging Harry Maguire early in the second-half.
He hasn't featured since, and his prospects of a return for the June friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg hinge on the speed of his recovery from the knock that saw him substituted at the weekend.
For Coleman, it was a successful season on one level - Everton head to their brand new Bramley Moore Dock home as a Premier League side.
This season it never really looked in doubt, unlike in recent campaigns. In 2022/23, they finished just two points clear of the relegation zone, while 12 months earlier the gap was four points.
'The end result, absolutely, was for Everton Football Club to be heading into our new stadium in the Premier League,' Coleman told the official Everton programme.
'That's been hanging over our heads for a few years and now it's done.
'So, yeah, unselfishly, the goal was thankfully achieved but, you know, for my pride and professionalism, I've been disappointed with my availability this season – there is absolutely no getting away from that.
'I've had a couple of little niggles, I had an issue with my knee which I got resolved and that helped but I picked up another couple of little ones.
'The flip side to it is I've lived every minute of it and more than ever when it wasn't going well earlier in the season. It ended up me even standing on the sideline as a manager alongside Bainesy, when I was supposed to be on the bench that day.
'The emotions and the stress levels have been through the roof because of the uncertainty.'
As soon as David Moyes, the man that signed him in 2009, walked back through the door at Everton, however, uncertainty was no longer an issue.
Coleman even admitted that the Scot's return - after spells at Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, where he won the Europa Conference League - has left him a lot more chilled about the direction in which the club is heading.
'I must say, since the gaffer has come in, now I do feel relaxed and that's the biggest compliment I can give him,' said the Donegalman.
'I knew immediately there was someone in the building that will hurt every bit as much as me if Everton were to go down – and that there was someone in the building wanting Everton to succeed every bit as much as me.
'The manager has got unbelievable pride in being here. I know he's been to Manchester United, West Ham, Sunderland, Real Sociedad, but I just feel like Everton is his club. He's the manager, isn't he?
'It's helped me sleep a bit easier at night having him here again! I've been comfortable to step back a little bit because he gets it, and he knows what this is all about.
'The manager, Billy [McKinlay], Alan [Irvine] have all been fantastic for us. Bainesy, too, has been absolutely brilliant, which I think anyone who knew him knew he would be because he's that character and whatever he puts his mind to, he's nearly perfect in it.
'We're in good hands and now we must all move forward, together.'

‘All is fine now' – Harry Maguire to join up with Manchester United team-mates on tour after personal matter

The 32-year-old was a half-time introduction in Saturday's 0-0 friendly draw with Leeds but was replaced in the 74th minute, then conspicuous by his absence from Tuesday's 32-man tour squad. Maguire remained at home due to a personal matter and the player has now confirmed he will only be a day late joining up with Ruben Amorim's men Stateside. 'All is fine now,' Maguire posted on an Instagram story. 'I will be travelling tomorrow to meet up with the squad. Thanks for your concern.' Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have unsurprisingly joined Barcelona-bound Marcus Rashford in being omitted from the travelling party heading for Chicago. The five are searching for new clubs and have been training away from Ruben Amorim's first-team squad since indicating that they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo is part of the group after completing his move from Brentford on Monday for a fee rising to a potential £71million. Fellow summer arrivals Matheus Cunha, whose partner recently gave birth, and Diego Leon are also on the plane. Lisandro Martinez is included as he continues his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament injury sustained in February. PA understands the United defender is not yet ready for team training. Amorim's side are flying from Manchester to their base in Chicago, where they will play Bournemouth at Soldier Field on July 30 as part of the Premier League Summer Series. They start the pre-season tournament at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey – host of next year's World Cup final – against West Ham on Saturday evening local time. United finish their three-game trip against Everton at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta on August 3. Amorim's side welcome Fiorentina, including United great David De Gea, to Old Trafford for their final warm-up friendly on August 9 – the weekend before their Premier League opener at home to Arsenal.

Ireland stars running out of time to make Lions' second Test v Australia

Joe McCarthy and Mack Hansen are major doubts for the Lions' second Test against Australia on Ireland duo took no part today n either the 24-19 victory over First Nations/Pasifika at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium or in the training session for those involved in the first Test win in Brisbane last lock McCarthy is suffering from plantar fasciitis, a foot injury, after coming off just 43 minutes into that first Test, while Connacht winger Hansen missed out on that game with a foot injury of his own picked up in the victory over AUNZ.'He hasn't trained so far but with the nature of the week, which is a bit different, we'll see how he is for Thursday," said Farrell in relation to McCarthy."Mack's progressing. Whether he's progressing quick enough we'll see. Everyone's always different. How they progress through whatever, getting through the next stages and stuff. Sometimes something flares up and it might take a day or two to settle down and then off they go so we'll stay open minded about those two.'We'll see how people wake up in the morning. Things always change when you wake up in the morning from a match and get information you don't have the night before. We have got the day off tomorrow so it gives us a bit of space.' The Lions will resume training on Thursday and Lions boss Andy Farrell will reveal his second Test matchday 23 afterwards. If McCarthy doesn't make it, Farrell could move Tadhg Beirne to the second row. But it is more likely he will keep the faith with last week's highly effective back row unit of Beirne, Tom Curry and Jack Conan. If he does, England's Ollie Chessum will partner Maro Itoje. Garry Ringrose will still hope for involvement despite having to play 65 minutes today after Scotland's Darcy Graham was injured. Very few Lions hopefuls put their hands up for Test inclusion in a niggly, close encounter. 'I thought he performed really well, so some real good positives as far as that is concerned," Farrell must decide whether to start with the Irish centre partnership of Ringrose and Bundee Aki or retain the Scotland pair Sene Tuipulotu and Huw Jones. Owen Farrell, who skippered the Lions yesterday, is tipped for a bench role after an assured display that showcased his leadership Hugo Keenan could come under pressure for the full-back jersey from Blair Kinghorn, The Scot proved his fitness after a knee injury kept him out of the Brisbane victory. Farrell praised the contribution of Naas' Jamie Osborne, who scored two tries on his Lions debut. "For his first time wearing the shirt, I thought he was very good, there were some nice individual performances out there," he said. "I thought 14 points up and finding space everywhere, we started to play the game a little bit like an exhibition match and it was never going to be like that." Farrell is expecting a reaction from Schmidt's Wallabies. "If you can't get up for what's coming, we're all in the wrong place," he declared. "To me, this is the biggest game of our lives, every one of us, that's part of our squad so we'll make sure that we address the week like that."
