Who is the Wirral cat man? The mysterious cat figure inspiring an online witch hunt

Daily Mirror12 hours ago
"I put the flash on my phone and I saw the 'Cat Man' sat there staring right at me": a mysterious suited figure has been terrorising and fascinating the people of Wirral. But who is behind it?
Wirral residents may be witnessing a new urban legend in the making. Unnerving sightings of a man in a black cat costume have been reported stalking the coastal streets of Merseyside, inspiring amusement, confusion and terror. It's even turned into a TikTok witch hunt, with videos of sightings racking up thousands of views. But who is behind it?

Facebook user Abbie Gilbert was walking her dog when she first heard the sound of a grown man making cat noises. She shone a torch and suddenly he was there: a man in a cat suit waving his arms at her before scarpering up a hill.

She then posted the photos to Facebook, asking: 'Does anyone know who the freak in the cat mask and morph suit is at the coastal park near the harvester?' She added: 'Never been so scared.'

The strange cat-ear wearing figure has since been seen prowling mainly beach-side areas: in the scrubby grass and nearby parks. Most recent reported sightings appear to place him around the Leasowe Beach, a popular local spot.
On July 9, photos of the 'Cat Man' were posted to the Facebook group Crimewatch Wirral. The caption explained that they were in the Leasowe Bay area and they took a picture of the view.

A social media user wrote: 'I spotted something on the picture it looked like a black figure so I put the flash on my phone on and I saw the 'Cat Man' sat there staring right at me.' They added: 'I was absolutely shaken, please stay safe although it is hasn't committed a crime.'

Reactions have been mixed. Many of the comments haven't been taking the Cat Man seriously, with one even joking that someone should 'put a collar and a bell on him.' However, others are a lot more concerned. 'That's absolutely terrifying,' one wrote. 'It's just weird and creepy," another said.

On July 10, another Facebook user claimed that the cat-man 'was found peering through somebody's window and approaching people in a threatening manner walking their dogs on Leasowe Bay.' Meanwhile, there have been reports that the cat has been caught 'hissing' at people.
But while many are afraid, others are morbidly curious. TikTokers are now posting videos of themselves hanging by the Wirral coast at night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the mysterious figure for themselves. Some of these videos have hundreds of thousands of views, as commenters gather share their own tales of the suited cat.

A group has even been set up on Facebook specifically to track sightings of the mysterious prankster, which now has over 2.2K members – though this of course has led to its own problems. Within the scope of just 12 hours, group members have claimed to have spotted him in the middle of a field, getting into a caravan, and in two separate parks. 'Everyone's lying, can't be in 7 places at once lmao,' one person wrote.
Others have even made pleas to treat the cat man humanely, as the cat hunt has intensified. 'Cat man isn't going to come out if people do things to him and try to hunt him down to try hurt or unmask him,' one Facebook user wrote.
Theories as to who might be behind the costume are also running rampant. Some say he's suffering from a mental illness, others believe it's an elaborate hoax. Meanwhile, a few even believe they could be a sexual exhibitionist.
There may even be copycats. Vickie Cummings recently posted a TikTok of a 'Cat Man' sighting from her car, though as the suited figure approached many comments pointed out that it looked like a woman, casting doubt over the authenticity of the sighting. 'Apparently not the real cat man? So there's 2,' she later wrote in a TikTok caption.

Woman who 'seduced and blackmailed Buddhist monks' caught by Thai police

The woman, aged in her 30s, is accused by police in Thailand of enticing celibate Buddhist monks into sexual relationships before demanding hush money from them A woman who allegedly 'seduced and blackmailed' a string of Buddhist monks has been arrested by police in Thailand. The Southeast Asian nation has been rocked in recent weeks by an emerging sex scandal involving a number of senior monks, with the behaviour falling foul of a strict celibacy rule in place for ordained members of the faith. At least nine abbots and senior monks involved have been disrobed and cast out of the monkhood, the Royal Thai Police Central Investigation Bureau said. On Tuesday, Wilawan Emsawat, in her mid-30s, was arrested at her home in Nonthaburi province north of Bangkok. She is accused of enticing Buddhist monks into sexual relationships, before pressuring them into making large payments to cover up their intimacy. Charges against her include extortion, money laundering and receiving stolen goods. Police said they traced money transferred to her by a senior monk from a bank account belonging to his temple in northern Thailand. Wilawan has not made a statement since her arrest, and it is unclear if she has legal representation. Speaking to local media before her arrest, she acknowledged a relationship with one monk and said she had given him money. Police said Wilawan deliberately targeted senior monks for financial gain, and said they found several monks had transferred large amounts of money after she initiated romantic relationships with them. Her bank accounts received around 385 million baht (£8.8 million) in the past three years, but most of the funds were spent on online gambling websites, police said. Jaroonkiat Pankaew, deputy commissioner of Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau, said the investigation began last month after an abbot of a famous temple in Bangkok abruptly left the monkhood. The intelligence service - equivalent to the the UK's National Crime Agency or US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) - has since set up a Facebook page for people to report misbehaving monks Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has meanwhile ordered authorities to review and consider tightening existing laws related to monks and temples to restore faith in Buddhism, government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said yesterday. He added: "We will investigate monks across the country. I believe that the ripple effects of this investigation will lead to a lot of changes."

Caitlyn Jenner's gesture to Sophia Hutchins family after heartbreaking death

Caitlyn Jenner's manager died after colliding with a car while on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) ride near Caitlyn's Malibu mansion Caitlyn Jenner has reportedly been supporting Sophia Hutchins' family after her manager tragically died while on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) ride near Caitlyn's Malibu mansion. ‌ The LA Sheriff's Department reported earlier this month that the 29-year-old died at around 11.30am. The crash occurred on Decker Canyon Road, which is a public road about a mile north of Pacific Coast Highway. Authorities were called, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. It was said that drones were used to help locate Sophia's body after the ATV collided with another vehicle on the road above. ‌ ‌ Almost two weeks after the tragic accident, it has been reported that Caitlyn, 75, has offered Sophie's mum Amy a place to stay as they grieve the late manager's death. A source recently told TMZ: "Both devastated, Caitlyn and Amy have been leaning on each other for support during this incredibly difficult time." The Mirror have reached out to Caitlyn's reps for comment. ‌ In previous reports from MailOnline, officers claimed Sophia was speeding at the time of the crash. "It looks like she may have been speeding and rear-ended the other car, the other party, and then that caused her to veer to the right and go off the cliff," Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo said to the publication. ‌ "It doesn't seem like she was following them. I think she just she came up on them and then hit the car." The women in the Mazda, which Sophia is said to have tried to swerve around, were uninjured. The sergeant said: "So it looked like she tried to manoeuvre to go around it, but she was going too fast and just ended up clipping the rear end of that Mazda, causing her to veer off and go off the cliff there." It came as a source close to the Keeping Up With The Kardashian star disclosed to "Caitlyn is numb with shock. She is absolutely devastated and can't believe what's happened. Sophia was a big part of her life." ‌ Sophia helped Caitlyn with her professional affairs after her split from Kris Jenner in 2017. Sophia, who featured in Caitlyn's I Am Cait docuseries, wanted to help shield Caitlyn from exploitation. In a candid New York Times piece from 2019, she explained: "I saw nobody was managing her, and there were all these people taking massive advantage. And I was saying: 'Caitlyn, if I don't step in here and start managing you, you're going to go broke'."

Seven officers investigated after man 'in crisis' dies during Boston arrest

Seven police officers are being investigated after a man they restrained outside of a Boston-area fish market died. The officers handcuffed Francis Gigliotti, 43, near Bradford Seafood restaurant in Havervill on Friday night. Gigliotti was captured on CCTV walking onto the middle of White Street and into traffic. The footage obtained by NBC10 Boston showed Gigliotti appearing to fall while exiting a store and hitting his head on a car. The restaurant owner said Gigliotti was acting out of control, but some witnesses who recorded the incident on their cell phones said the officers restraining him were using too much force. Gigliotti became unresponsive during the scuffle and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His fiancée, Michele Rooney, said he was having a mental health crisis and was not carrying any weapons. 'Eyewitnesses say more than six officers restrained him—piling on top of him—while he screamed out for help and ultimately stopped breathing,' Rooney wrote in a GoFundMe page for Gigliotti's funeral expenses. 'I am completely devastated. Francis should still be here.' Rooney told NBC10 that witnesses who were videotaping before she arrived said that Gigliotti was hollering, 'Help, help, get off of me, help me, help me.' 'They had their knee on his neck and they were sitting on him. They were like, it was like a giant pig pile on top of him,' Rooney said of the officers. 'He had a heart of gold, he would never hurt anybody, he was screaming for help and their way of helping him is killing him by applying pressure on him?' On Monday, Haverhill police Chief Robert Pistone Jr announced that the seven officers were put on paid administrative leave as the Essex County District Attorney's Office reviews the incident. The officers were not wearing body cameras, as the police department does not have them, according to Mayor Melinda Barrett. Since the 1990s, the US Justice Department has told officers to roll suspects off their stomachs when they are handcuffed to avoid asphyxia, which can lead to suffocation and death. Rooney said that the medical examiner told her it could take up to 60 days to determine Gigliotti's cause of death. Over the weekend, a vigil was held for Gigliotti and some protesters rallied outside the police department demanding answers. Anyone with videos or photos from the incident is urged to share them with the district attorney's office. The GoFundMe page had raised more than $5,200 as of Tuesday evening. More Trending 'We are now left to carry not only the pain of his loss,' Rooney wrote, 'But the burden of funeral costs and the legal fight for justice in his name.' Gigliotti was from Haverhill, a suburb about 35 miles north of Boston. He was the co-founder of Teddy Bear Roofing, according to a Facebook post by the company. 'We started this business together less than a month ago, after working side-by-side for the last four years. What we built was more than a company. It was a dream. And it was finally starting to take shape,' states the post. 'Francis was kind, hardworking, loyal, and full of life. He had so much ahead of him, and he didn't deserve this. None of this is okay.'
