Hollywood Is Losing The War For Attention

Forbes05-05-2025
Hollywood hasn't lost its ability to tell great stories, yet it's losing the war for attention to platforms that reward engagement and iteration. TikTok users now spend 95 minutes a day on the app. Roblox reports nearly 98 million daily users, each spending over two hours inside its worlds. Twitch streams generate more monthly viewing than all broadcast scripted programming combined.

For a century, Hollywood operated on scarcity. There were limited screens, finite channels, and a well-grooved pipeline for finding, funding, and distributing content. Today's media economy is governed by abundance. Platforms operate as responsive ecosystems, delivering infinite content tailored by real-time feedback to the tastes of the user. Author, investor and former Amazon executive Matthew Ball suggests in his book The Metaverse, Building The Spatial Internet that creative work is no longer fixed from launch but instead tuned by user feedback.

Social media advertising revenue surpassed tv and cable television in time spent in 2022. For Gen Z that happened in 2020. The creator economy makes this shift visible. There are no gatekeepers. The algorithm shows your content to others if others like your content. According to Forbes, the top 50 social media creators earned more than $700 million in 2024.
Synthetic content now appears in two distinct forms. The first is human-driven: creators use AI tools to accelerate production or enhance quality and lower costs. Studios like Holywater and Fable are already producing shows this way. 'We start with the audience, then generate and evolve the content with them,' said Holywater founder Bogdan Nesvit. 'The next stage of content will be generated by AI, not just recommended by it.' Said Dean Takahashi of GamesBeat in an interview. 'TikTok's AI algorithms will create content, instead of curating it.'

Nowhere is this transformation clearer than in persistent game worlds we used to call The Metaverse. Roblox. Roblox revenue exceeded $3.60 billion in 2024, marking a 28.7% increase from the previous year. Hollywood, entertainment media, and many other industries have already been buffeted by the cultural changes wrought by technology, but we've not seen anything as disruptive as AI since the arrival of the web browser in 1993. Audience erosion has been happening for decades but AI is going to put a rocket under it. On the plus side, AI will fix the problem of skyrocketing production costs, leading to a new 'golden age' of filmmaking. Profits will return. Creatives will no longer be shackled by scarcity. There would be a parade except for the empty offices.

Sophocles said "there is no great gift from the gods that does not come with a curse." AI saves the entertainment business, but it's a job killer. And lower cost is not a sustainable advantage in a war with an algorithm, whose marginal cost is zero. Human made stories are never going away but when the war is over, they may not account for much of our attention.
This is the second in a series of stories that began with AI And Hollywood's Next Golden Age. There's much more to explore. In the coming weeks, I'll publish a series of follow-up essays examining what this disruption could mean for Hollywood, gaming, big tech, and pop culture.

Gen Z Has Lost Its Mind

For most of Gen Z, they've only known a world with smartphones and tap-to-pay. Therefore, they are reinventing the wheel and taking concepts from an analog society. You Can Now Pre-Order A Switch 2 Bundle With ‘Pokémon Legends: Z-A'

Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Nintendo's Switch 2 console launched last month in two distinct purchasing configurations: One was a vanilla base package, priced at $449.99, which only contained the device itself and no extras. The second option was a bundle that contained the Switch 2, plus a digital copy of Mario Kart World. I'm sure the base offering will stick around for the foreseeable future, but it seems there's already another unique bundle on the horizon, perhaps deploying to replace the current Mario Kart World variant. Nintendo has announced that you can now pre-order a brand new first-party Starter (apropos, given the pack-in software here) kit: A shiny Switch 2 with a fresh copy of the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Switch 2 Edition. The bundle is priced at $499.99, just like the MKW version, and is due to release alongside the new Pokémon game on October 16. Interestingly, Z-A is simultaneously launching on the legacy Switch, but apparently there isn't an OLED or Lite bundle arriving for either. It's not like the Switch needs any more damn sales, however. Still, I do worry about the performance of this last-gen version, given the track record of Pokémon titles on the Switch 1. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder The copy of Z-A included with this new bundle will be digital in nature, so if you're wanting a physical copy, it might be advisable to buy these products separately. That said, you're getting a discount with the bundle, seeing as Pokémon Legends: Z-A is separately priced at $69.99. You're saving $10 less than with the Mario Kart World bundle, though, which is currently going for $79.99. But it's better than nothing. From a financial perspective, I think these bundles are great, but I do wish Nintendo would make the consoles themselves more compelling. At the end of the day, you're really just buying a standard Switch 2 and saving some money on a single game. It would be cool if these systems boasted limited edition paint-jobs to match the particular game they're shipped with. Perhaps a rainbow, Earth-themed Switch 2 for Mario Kart World, or a Switch 2 with a Poké Ball aesthetic for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. We'll no doubt see special edition Switch 2 consoles down the road, though. I'd have considered pre-ordering this new bundle had I not literally snagged a Mario Kart World edition of the Switch 2 on Target's website late last night. That said, you can reserve the Pokémon edition from the My Nintendo Store and various other retailers today.

MrBeast CEO and 'Beast Games' winner rally brand partners and rare disease support on Wall Street

NEW YORK (AP) — MrBeast's new CEO hit Wall Street Wednesday as YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson's media empire looks to develop long-term brand partnerships and, in turn, unlock more funding for its charitable content. Venture capitalist Jeff Housenbold took over MrBeast leadership last summer with a mandate to professionalize an ever-growing entertainment company. YouTube's most popular creator had reached record audience levels far outpacing its startup days, while vowing to reassess its internal culture amid multiple controversies. But, despite joining Nasdaq's closing bell ceremony on Wednesday, Housenbold said their strategic plan does not currently include a public offering — or any active funding rounds. 'Do I want to make banger content? Yeah. That's cool," Housenbold told The Associated Press. "But what can we do with that banger content? Generate profits, make a sustainable business that gives us greater ability to impact people's lives around the world.' 'We're marching quickly to profitability, so we don't have to raise additional capital,' he added. Instead, MrBeast is focused on securing multi-year exclusive advertising deals as opposed to single-video brand partnerships. With 416 million subscribers and legions of impressionable young fans, Housenbold argued that MrBeast is uniquely positioned to deliver more bang for companies' marketing bucks by pointing that 'firehouse of attention' at them. Along the way, Housenbold said he is encouraging Donaldson to tout the channel's charitable works — which often feature quantifiable stunts such as building wells, removing ocean plastic or covering cataract surgery costs. The company, in his view, 'can do good while doing well.' 'The more people who like us 'cause we do good, the more people watch our videos," he said. 'The more people watch our videos, the more we're able to drive in fees from our advertising partners... the more we can invest in more content to do more good in the world.' New projects such as the Amazon Prime reality show and a James Patterson novel from HarperCollins aim to diversify the genders and ages of his audience. Housenbold said that base has historically consisted mostly of 8-to-25-year-olds and men. But Housenbold acknowledged missteps in last year's production of 'Beast Games," which prompted allegations of 'unsafe' conditions from some contestants who said an unorganized set led to injuries, irregular food provision and lacking access to medication. While describing most of those reports as 'inaccurate,' Housenbold said they were 'better prepared' for the second season's recently wrapped shoot. 'Building sets for a 10-episode show is different than a 22-minute YouTube video," he said. "The scale, the size, the sophistication, the safety, the security, the cost effectiveness of doing that. We didn't staff up enough for Beast Games.' Ringing Nasdaq's closing bell Wednesday with Housenbold was the winner of the $10 million grand prize awarded in that inaugural 'Beast Games' season. Jeffrey Allen, the father of a child with creatine transporter deficiency, has promised to put some of his winnings toward existing treatments and research for a cure to the rare genetic disorder. He said the Association for Creatine Deficiencies, where he is a board member, added 1,000 new donors in the weeks following the final 'Beast Games' episodes' release. He hopes Wednesday's visit will draw more attention and money to all rare diseases. 'This is where companies that are bringing true change to the marketplace come to listen to other companies," Allen said. "So, there's no better place for a budding rare disease nonprofit to come and show, 'Hey we're trying to change the world, too.'' ___ Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits receives support through the AP's collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.
