Northern Ont. RIDE check leads to impaired, drug possession charges

A 58-year-old Brantford man is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving and drug possession, following a traffic stop in Espanola over the weekend.
Members of Ontario Provincial Police's Manitoulin detachment conducted a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check at the intersection of Highway 6 and Old Webbwood Road.
A vehicle came through the check area at about 11 p.m. on July 19, police said in a news release.
Officers initiated an investigation after a vehicle passed through the checkpoint, leading to multiple charges for the driver.
The accused has been charged with two counts of drug possession, operation while prohibited and impaired driving along with a charge for driving with open alcohol in the vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court in Espanola on Sept. 22.
This incident marks the 96th impaired driving arrest handled by the Manitoulin OPP so far this year.
In addition to the charges, under provincial legislation, the motorist also received 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days at the owner's expense.
Authorities continue warn against impaired driving
In the news release, OPP emphasized that no amount of alcohol or drugs is safe for drivers and urged the public to report suspected impaired drivers.

Create Account OPP officers say they responded to a marine call on Balsam Lake – near Cobokonk – around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday and they were notified that a man in a canoe had gone overboard and failed to resurface. 'The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, including members of the Marine Unit and the Emergency Response Unit, patrolled the water extensively but were unable to locate the individual before nightfall,' the OPP said in a statement. Police in West Vancouver are appealing for witnesses after a one person died in a crash Tuesday afternoon. Officers were called to the scene of a single-vehicle collision on Pound Road around noon, according to a statement from the West Vancouver Police Department. 'While we are in the early stages of the investigation, current evidence suggests that the vehicle was travelling east on Pound Road when it left the roadway before hitting a tree and catching fire,' a spokesperson wrote on Tuesday. 'Tragically, the lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.' The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service were called in to assist with the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam video from the area is urged to call 604-925-7300. 'The West Vancouver Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and all those impacted by this unfortunate event,' the statement from police said, adding that witnesses 'struggling' in the aftermath of the incident can contact victim services by calling 604-925-7468.
