Dudhwa Tiger Reserve now home to 180 butterfly species
'The butterfly species count has reached 180 here,' said wildlife biologist Vipin Saini, who compiled the data. India, overall, is home to 1,500 species of butterflies.
As per a survey done by teams from the University of Lucknow, the species count stands at over 110 in Dudhwa.
Butterflies, also known as bio-indicators, are extremely sensitive to climate change and prefer being in a healthy environment. An increase in their number and species is suggestive of better ecology at DTR, which ranked fourth in India for tiger count in the 2022 census. The Dudhwa national park, spread over 490.3 sq km, is home to 135 tigers out of the total 205 in Uttar Pradesh. DTR had a tiger population of 82 in the 2018 census.
'Migratory butterflies from Uttarakhand also add to UP's butterfly population,' said Prof Amita Kanaujia of the department of zoology at the University of Lucknow.
The news of improving butterfly population at Dudhwa, which also has 450 species of birds, has sent ripples of excitement through the park administration and tourists. Initially, DTR was officially known for being home to only 45 butterfly species. This significant increase highlights the park's rich and unique biodiversity, further cementing its reputation as a haven for wildlife.
Some species on the list are not common in the region. Their names include Common Mormon, Common Mine, Common Lime, Twany Coaster, Gaudy baron (rare), Striped tiger, Common Tiger (male and female), Grey count (rare), Commandor.
The study of new species will soon be published in journals, said Saini.

Aqua Line extension till Boraki multi-modal hub gets Centre's nod
Noida: Centre has cleared the extension of Noida Metro's Aqua Line up to Boraki, less than an hour's drive from Jewar, which will take the city's transit network a step closer to the upcoming Noida International Airport. The 2.6-km-long elevated stretch will add two new stations—Junpat and Boraki—at a cost of Rs 416 crore. The project is expected to be ready in three years. The metro corridor extension is to take the Aqua Line to the proposed multi-modal transport hub at Boraki, where UP govt plans to integrate the Delhi-Howrah rail corridor with an inter-state bus terminal and rapid rail till Ghaziabad. "Once both the corridors are operational, it will become easier for commuters from Noida and Greater Noida to reach the airport," he said. The funding for the new metro corridor will be shared by the Centre and UP govt (20% each), with the remaining 60% coming through a loan from the National Capital Region Planning Board. NMRC estimates that ridership on the new segment could reach 60,000 daily by 2031. The Aqua Line currently runs 29.7km between Sector 51 in Noida and Depot Station in Jaitpur. NMRC has also proposed a 17-km extension from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park V in Greater Noida, which awaits clearance from the Centre. Similarly, the 11.6km corridor linking Sector 142 station to Botanical Garden via eight new stations is pending approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. UP to showcase cultural heritage at Japan Tourism Expo
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh will showcase its rich cultural, spiritual and natural heritage at the Japan Tourism Expo 2025 scheduled from Sep 25 to 28, an official spokesperson said on Wednesday. The UP tourism department will participate with a powerful and strategic presence, highlighting the state's heritage to a global audience, particularly visitors and investors from Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Officials said a themed pavilion spanning 54sqm will be set up at the venue. It will use advanced technology like digital LED screens, auto-navigation displays and AR-based selfie panels to offer an immersive experience.
