I tried Aldi's Smart Kettle and boiled water from my sofa

However, I thought the only way to see if some of the smart home gadgets are worth it is to try one for myself.
While saving time and effort is usually the reason people opt for these electronic devices and even robots, some things are so easy to do that I'm not sure I need to change the way I do them.
That being said, I tried out Aldi's Smart Kettle – it's certainly smart but is it worth it?
The Smart Kettle shows you the temperature of the water as it boils (Image: Newsquest)
Whether boiling water for a cuppa or your pasta, this Smart Kettle can be operated from any room in the house using an app on your phone - a real gamechanger!
The instructions for setting the kettle up were easy to understand and it was ready to go in minutes.
The booklet talks you through downloading the Tuya Smart app – an app that allows you to control various electronic smart devices, including Aldi's Smart Kettle.
If you find you're already standing next to the kettle, you can still boil it manually too.
Using the app, you can boil water in the kettle or even purify it. You can also select several options, including black tea, coffee, green tea, honey and dried milk.
This means you can boil the kettle at varying temperatures that suit the purpose. When it's finished, the kettle makes a beeping sound to let you know it's ready.
If you know you'll need boiling water again in a short while, you can keep it warm for up to two hours with a handy tab telling you how much longer it will stay warm for.
Are you a keen tea or coffee drinker at the same time each day? You can set a timer for the kettle to boil itself, ideal for your morning brew with the water able to boil while you convince yourself to get out of bed.
The kettle even knows when there isn't enough or any water in there and the boil dry protection will make sure it switches itself off when this happens.
Overall, Aldi's Smart Kettle is a clever appliance that I'd recommend for those of us who have busy lives and like to prepare early for a brew.
While I'm not usually keen on smart devices and the guilt that being lazy conjures up inside me, I can see this being very helpful and slotting in nicely to some homes – it has in mine.
I appreciate the quirky functions and the technological advances it has compared to my normal kettle, including the digital display which shows the temperature of the kettle rising as it boils.
Plus, as someone who works from home, it's so easy to pop the kettle on without having to move away from my desk which is ideal when I'm busy at my laptop but know I'll be due a cuppa soon.
Everyone's allowed to be lazy sometimes, right?

Brits believed to be making their cup of tea wrong - how do you brew it?
The Smart Kettle is available at Aldi for £29.99 and features smart app control over both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, a temperature display and an easy-to-use touch screen temperature control from 40 to 100C.
Research from the supermarket ahead of the launch of its Smart Kettle revealed that 48% of Brits say they often have to re-boil their kettle because they get distracted - this is where the kettle's keep warm function could really come in handy.
The study also showed that the kettle is normally on at 7am for the first cup of the day with 40% having a specific mug they always use which they believe helps their tea taste its best. You can schedule the kettle to have your water boiling for your morning brew before you've even made it downstairs.

How to stop your iPhone BREAKING in the heat – protect your mobile NOW

TOO HOT TO HANDLE How to stop your iPhone BREAKING in the heat – protect your mobile NOW Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT'S not just us feeling the heat this weekend - but our phones are too. As the mercury skyrockets to highs of 32C and many flocking to parks and beaches, your iPhone will be exposed to the elements too. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Hot weather can force your iPhone to temporarily shut down while it cools off An amber heat health alert has been issued for six regions across England, that will remain in place until Monday. This includes The West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and East of England. The UK Health Security Agency-issued warning means there's an increase in risk to health for people aged over 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. But that's not the only warning to watch out for. As well as themselves, Brits need to take special care of their expensive gadgets. Overheating can cause your smartphone to temporarily shut down – and can also damage your battery. Here are seven ways to protect your smartphone – be it an iPhone or Android handset – in hot weather. 1. Keep it out of direct sunlight Make sure to keep your iPhone cool by keeping it out of direct sunlight on hotter days. It may sound obvious, but using your device while it's soaking up extra heat from the sun can cause significant damage. Letting your iPhone get too toasty could trigger a worrying pop-up that shuts your phone down. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Even Apple has warned that letting your iPhone temperature rise too high could "permanently shorten battery life". "Low - or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behaviour," Apple explains. High temperatures can mess up your battery life for good. "Using an iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life," an Apple support post reads. 2. Remove the case Another way to help your iPhone cool down is to remove any case you move have slapped on. While they're a useful way to protect your device from scratches and drops, they also act as an insulating layer that can trap heat. This is particularly true if you use a leather or rubber case, which are excellent insulators. It may be worth weighing up whether – on hotter days – your case is doing more damage than good. 3. Turn off your phone If your phone is getting too hot, switching it off is a good way to ensure it doesn't sustain any long-term damage. This is a good way to shut down the processor, battery and any other parts that can get especially toasty. Of course, this leaves you unable to use your phone, so is not a permanent solution and should only be used in emergencies. Alternatively, you can just stop using your phone for five minutes to give it a chance to cool down. 4. Change your settings Changing your phone's settings is another way to help it to keep cool on scorching days. For instance, turning your screen's brightness down uses less of your phone's battery and so causes it to heat up less. If your phone automatically turns brightness to max when you're outside, consider turning this off. Also by turning your data off, you're saving battery which is also closely linked to phone temperature. Turning your phone onto low-power mode can also help fix the issue. 5. Don't push your phone to the limit Avoid using power-hungry apps for long periods of time. This is particularly important for gamers, because graphics-intensive game apps can cause a phone's processor to heat up very quickly. Certain features, such as GPS and gaming, can also cause problems when used in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time. 6. Don't leave your phone in your pocket Don't put your iPhone in confined places, like under bed covers or in your pocket. Your trousers or shorts can act as an insulating layer that traps heat around your device. This is particularly true if you're wearing something tight, such as skinny-fit jeans, that holds onto air more effectively. 7. Leave it somewhere cool If none of the above work, you can always try storing your phone somewhere cool. This might be under an electric fan or even in one of the cupboards in your kitchen. It is not recommended that you store your phone in the fridge or freezer, however, as this can damage it.

Huge EV boost as new chargers planned for UK add 249 miles in just 5 minutes

EV drivers tired of slow charges are in for a major boost as automotive giant prepares to roll out its ultra-fast 'Flash Charges' across the UK, dramatically enhancing the country's EV infrastructure Brits with electric vehicles (EVs) are set to experience a giant leap forward in charging technology - but there's one small catch. Chinese automotive giant BYD is preparing to bring its ultra-fast 'Flash Chargers' across the UK in a move set to dramatically enhance the UK's EV infrastructure, making charging quicker and more convenient than ever before. The new chargers, capable of delivering up to 1 megawatt (1,000 kW) of power, are engineered to reduce charging times substantially. ‌ However, these new technologies won't be rolled out in the UK until 2026, meaning EV owners will have to wait months before getting their hands on the super-fast chargers. The news comes shortly after BYD announced the creation of its own ultra-fast EV charger, representing a major step forward in the industry. It stands out for its remarkable capability — it can add approximately 1.2 miles of range every second, meaning drivers could gain up to 249 miles of range in just five minutes. ‌ EV sales hit 315k in 72 hours for one car brand as 500-mile range car launches This speed is comparable to the time it takes to refuel traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, effectively closing the gap between electric and petrol/diesel cars in terms of convenience and usability. The rollout of these high-speed chargers is expected to make EV ownership significantly more attractive to a broader range of drivers. In an exclusive interview with the Independent, BYD special advisor Alfredo Altavilla confirmed the company's ambitious plans. He stated: "In 2026. You will get a few stations in every country in Europe. They will be branded BYD, but they will be open to everybody." ‌ So while Flash Chargers will carry BYD branding, they will be accessible to all electric vehicle owners, not just those driving the manufacturer's models. But it's important to note that only vehicles equipped to handle megawatt-level charging will be able to take full advantage of the fastest charging speeds these stations will offer. BYD's latest car tech — the Super e-Platform — features a 1,000V high-voltage architecture with a Flash Charging Battery. It is available in the Han L and Tang L models, which can already be ordered in China. ‌ BYD's advisor told the Independent that Denza — the manufacturer's more upmarket brand — models would debut BYD's new technology across the UK and Europe, along with SUVs and sports cars from BYD's luxury brand Yangwang. Altavilla said: "The idea is for Denza and Yangwang to be the so-called technology manifesto of the BYD group. Those are the two brands where all new technologies will be firstly introduced. So, the flash charging for example." The introduction of BYD's Flash Chargers represents a major milestone in the evolution of EV infrastructure in the UK. With the ability to add nearly 250 miles of range in just five minutes, these chargers promise to make EVs even more practical and appealing for everyday use. As the UK moves towards a more environmentally friendly future, such innovations are set to play a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of greener technology and reducing our reliance on planet-killing fossil fuels.
