BERLIN (AFP) The leaders of Britain, France and Germany said Friday the "humanitarian catastrophe" in the Gaza Strip must end now, as the war-ravaged Palestinian territory faces a deepening crisis. "We call on the Israeli government to immediately lift restrictions on the flow of aid and urgently allow the UN and humanitarian NGOs to carry out their work to take action against starvation," they said in a joint statement released by Berlin.British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that "the most basic needs of the civilian population, including access to water and food, must be met without any further delay". "Withholding essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable," they said."Israel must uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law."More than 100 aid and human rights groups warned this week that "mass starvation" was spreading in Gaza after more than 21 months of war. Israel has rejected accusations that it is responsible for the deepening crisis in Gaza, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called "man-made".Israel placed the Gaza Strip under an aid blockade in March, which it only partially eased two months later while sidelining the longstanding UN-led distribution system. The European leaders also stressed that "the time has come to end the war in Gaza. "We urge all parties to bring an end to the conflict by reaching an immediate ceasefire.""We stand ready to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political process that leads to lasting security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians and the entire region," they said.
Starmer had earlier said he would hold an "emergency call" on Gaza on Friday with Macron and Merz.

Israeli forces board Gaza-bound aid ship, says French MEP

Emma Fourreau, a French MEP and member of the Gaza-bound Handala mission, says Israeli forces have approached the vessel. 'The Israeli army is here,' she wrote on X, adding that she and others on board planned to toss their phones into the sea. Her post came as Al Jazeera Arabic reported that three Israeli naval ships had moved close to the aid vessel, just hours after the crew reported spotting an Israeli drone overhead. Footage shared via livestream by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition later showed at least six Israeli soldiers boarding the ship. Activists on board could be seen sitting together with life jackets on, holding their arms in the air.

Israel resumes token aid airdrops while continuing land blockade of aid into Gaza

The Israeli military claims that it will reopen 'humanitarian corridors' for UN convoys in Gaza and restart aid airdrops, measures aimed at easing a crisis largely caused by its own blockade of the besieged enclave. The move comes after what the army described as a 'situational assessment,' and follows months of Israeli restrictions that severely limited the entry of food, water, and medicine leading to a famine in Gaza. The airdrop, coordinated with international aid organisations, will include seven pallets of items such as flour, sugar, and canned goods provided by foreign partners. Airdrops have been widely criticised by humanitarian officials as symbolic and insufficient compared to allowing sustained truck deliveries through land crossings. The Israeli army also said it would support the expansion of a water desalination plant in Gaza by connecting it to Israeli electricity. Israel has itself destroyed much of Gaza's water and electricity infrastructure. Aid groups and UN officials have long called on Israel to fully lift its blockade and grant unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance, warning that piecemeal efforts fall short amid deepening famine and widespread disease.
