Forget about the dentist appointment: THIS vitamin can prevent tooth decay by 50%
Getting a dentist appointment these days is not easy, let alone the money you have to spend to fix issues. Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems that affects children and adults alike.
But the treatment does not have to cost you an arm and a leg. What if tooth decay could be prevented with a simple, affordable nutrient? A study has found a link between tooth decay and vitamin deficiency.
A review of historical clinical trials found that a certain vitamin lowers the rate of tooth decay. The study is published in

.
Link between tooth decay and
vitamin D
The review found that vitamin D was linked with a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of dental caries.
To understand the link between vitamin D and tooth decay, the researchers reviewed 24 controlled clinical trials, spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, on approximately 3,000 children in several countries. These trials pointed out that vitamin D was associated with an approximately 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.
"My main goal was to summarize the clinical trial database so that we could take a fresh look at this vitamin D question," Dr.

Philippe Hujoel of the University of Washington, who conducted the review, said.
What is vitamin D
Vitamin D, also known as the 'sunshine vitamin,' is an essential nutrient. It is a fat-soluble nutrient that plays a crucial role in the body. From maintaining bone health, immune function, and mood regulation, vitamin D helps in many vital functions. Our body can naturally produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, it naturally makes vitamin D from cholesterol.
The sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays interact with the cholesterol in skin cells and trigger the process of vitamin D synthesis.
You can also get this nutrient from foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified foods (milk, orange juice).

Though vitamin D's role in supporting bone health has not been disputed, there has been a significant disagreement over its role in preventing caries, Hujoel noted.
In 1950, the American Medical Association and the US National Research Council concluded that vitamin D was beneficial in managing dental caries. Later in 1989, the National Research Council, despite new evidence supporting vitamin D's caries-fighting benefits, called the issue 'unresolved.
'
"Such inconsistent conclusions by different organizations do not make much sense from an evidence-based perspective," Hujoel said.
The trials the team reviewed had increased vitamin D levels in children through UV radiation or by diet (cod liver oil or other products containing the vitamin). The trials they reviewed were conducted in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Austria, New Zealand, and Sweden, and were held in institutional settings, schools, medical and dental practices, or hospitals. The participants were children or young adults between the ages of 2 and 16 years, with a weighted mean age of 10 years.

The findings from the University of Washington reaffirm the importance of vitamin D for dental health. Children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries,' Dr. Michael Hollick, professor of medicine at the Boston University Medical Center said.
Studies have also found that Vitamin D deficiency is linked to dental caries in young children. "Whether this is more than just a coincidence is open to debate.
In the meantime, pregnant women or young mothers can do little harm by realizing that vitamin D is essential to their offspring's health. Vitamin D does lead to teeth and bones that are better mineralized," Hujoel said.
"One has to be careful with the interpretation of this systematic review. The trials had weaknesses which could have biased the result, and most of the trial participants lived in an era that differs profoundly from today's environment,' Hujoel added.

250 lives saved in Mys through Jeevasarthakathe organ donation initiative
Mysuru: In the past year, Jeevasarthakathe, the organ donation programme, saved 250 lives in Mysuru district. The district health department retrieved organs from 25 brain-dead donors, enabling life-saving transplants for patients in need. Officials say awareness and coordination steadily improved under the state's health mission. The state govt introduced the scheme in 1994 with the intention to address organ transplantation and provide a second chance of life for individuals suffering from end-stage organ disease. The Jeevasarthakathe scheme aims to create an efficient system for organ and tissue procurement from deceased donors and ensure the distribution of organs after obtaining necessary permission. With Jeevasarthakathe coordination, organs or tissues from a deceased or brain-dead person (the donor) are transplanted to another person (recipient) for the replacement of damaged and failed organs after surgical removal. A brain-dead or cardiac death, living persons can donate nine to ten types of organs, including kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestine. Corneas can restore sight, heart valves, skin can help burn victims and skin grafts, and bones can be used for reconstructive surgery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo A brain-dead person can save the lives of 10 to 12 individuals by donating organs, officials stated. In the last year, the department of health, under the supervision of Jeevasarthakathe coordinators, retrieved 225 different organs from 25 brain-dead individuals and saved the lives of 250 individuals suffering from various chronic diseases of organ failure, among other reasons. Apart from these, people of all ages, including children and the elderly, can donate organs. The department of health carried out organ retrieval processes under the supervision of Jeevasarthakathe coordinators. Speaking to TOI, district surveillance officer Dr M Nagaraju said the Jeevasarthakathe scheme saved the lives of 250 individuals in the last year in Mysuru district. The department is also spreading awareness among people about the importance of donating organs to save the lives of those suffering from chronic organ diseases at all its hospitals by conducting workshops in schools and educational institutions. "We are also taking help from corporates and non-govt organisations involved in the promotion of health and family welfare activities as well as organ donor activities," he said. People who want to donate organs must register their names on the official website of Jeevasarthakathe, which was launched by the department of health. They can also register offline by visiting the district surveillance office of the department of health and family welfare and at govt-run hospitals for registration of organ donation, officials said.

HC sets aside Sen's suspension
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday set aside the West Bengal Medical Council's order, suspending former MP Santanu Sen's registration as a medical practitioner for two years from July 4, 2025, for his "infamous conduct". But the court restrained Sen from using FRCP (Glasgow), a fellowship, in his letterhead until further order. Justice Amrita Sinha said Sen might use the expression 'diploma FRCP', as mentioned in the certificate he obtained in 2019. Calling the medical council order "non-speaking" and "cryptic", Justice Sinha said the petitioner was not told about the reasons behind passing the order. Justice Sinha directed the state medical council to send the petitioner information, evidence, complaint or inquiry, based on which the order was passed. She also told the council to offer the petitioner an opportunity to raise all issues in his defence and pass a "reasoned" order. She let the council start the proceedings against Sen de novo, if it wanted. The petitioner stated it was a diploma, not a degree. But he wrote 'FRCP' beside MBBS, which could mislead the public into thinking 'FRCP' was a degree," Datta said. The AG said it was "obligatory" for a medical practitioner to register extra qualifications with the council. Sen said, "During the WBMC hearing, I replied to every query. But my deposition was not considered by the council before suspending my registration. The decision was unethical and an anti-doctor measure, taken out of personal vendetta. Despite the extremely good work done by the govt, this kind of decision may antagonise the medical community. I hope it is only a matter of a few days before such an unethical step is revoked. "
