‘Matter of great pride': Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to launch sports university, 23 academies across 8 cities

Time of India15 hours ago

NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister
Pushkar Singh Dhami
is set to launch two initiatives for the development of sports and athletes, marking the fifth year of his tenure. The first is the establishment of a sports university in Haldwani, whose foundation is to be laid on Sports Day, and the other is the establishment of 23 sports academies across eight cities in the state.
The academies will be established in cities like Dehradun, Haldwani, and Haridwar, where sports infrastructure was developed during the National Games.
'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively,' said Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The initiatives are taken up to better maintain the sports infrastructure that has already been created and to establish a solid platform for training athletes. Rapid progress is being made in both projects taken up by the government, with the notification for the university already being issued.
The 38th National Games were held in Uttarakhand, with the state scoring a century of medals and ranking seventh in the medal tally.
The event ultimately led to the establishment of sports infrastructure, marking a milestone in the field of sports.
A new sports policy was announced in the state in 2021 that focused on encouraging athletes and included a provision of incentives ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore for Olympic medal winners. The incentive amount has been doubled since then. Government jobs are also offered to athletes who win medals in national and international competitions.

Neeraj Chopra Lauds Brett Lee's 'Javelin Throw Past', Australia Great's Reply Is Pure Gold

Brett Lee has responded to encouraging words from India's two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, who said the former Australian cricketer could be a good javelin thrower. In a freewheeling interview with JioStar, the official broadcaster of the most significant events of his season - the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, the Tokyo Olympic Games gold medallist said Brett Lee could be a good javelin thrower. Chopra won a silver medal in the javelin throw event in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. "I have heard that Brett Lee was a javelin thrower. I think he could throw the javelin well, especially when he was in his peak years," said Chopra, who won back-to-back titles in the Paris Diamond League event and Ostrava Golden Spike meet. In his response to the interview, Brett Lee said he did throw the javelin during his schooling days, but was nowhere near as good as Neeraj. "I did throw the javelin back in my schooling days, but nowhere near what Neeraj does & continues to do," wrote the former Australian pacer in his post on X, formerly Twitter. He also explained why he did not continue with javelin despite indulging in it in his school days, and said the sport is very tough on the elbow. Brett Lee also expressed his admiration for Neeraj Chopra, who is one of the most popular and famous athletes on the international circuit. "Very tough on the elbow. I have, however, admired what this fine athlete can do and wish him well," said Brett Lee. He also expressed his interest in trying javelin alongside India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. "I would like to try javelin with Jasprit Bumrah too, and hope he teaches me some bowling skills. While bowling and javelin are both throws, they are very different. I would like to learn from Bumrah." After his win in Paris, Neeraj was asked by a media outlet whether he had ever tried cricket, especially bowling. Neeraj said he would also like to try his hand at baseball pitching at some point.

Brad Pitt's F1 Mints Rs 24 Crore In Four Days

Last Updated: Besides Brad Pitt, F1 The Movie also features Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzeles and Kerry Condon in key supporting roles. Brad Pitt has made a thunderous return to the cinema with his new sports drama F1 The Movie. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for directing Top Gun: Maverick, the film has earned a total of Rs 24.65 crore net within just four days of its release. F1 has been released in the country in four languages: English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. According to Sacnilk, F1 earned an impressive Rs 3 crore on Monday, June 30, alone, showing only a slight drop from its opening-day collection of Rs 5.5 crore. This is a positive sign that people are enjoying Brad Pitt's new sports drama, based on Formula One racing. What's even more impressive is that F1 is a standalone film and not part of any series or franchise, unlike many Hollywood movies that do well in India. It is an original story, which is competing strongly against new Bollywood releases like Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par and Kajol's Maa. People have been loving the movie in IMAX, which is also giving it a boost for the second weekend. If it keeps going like this, F1 might soon cross the Rs 60 crore, just like Final Destination: Bloodlines did. And globally, experts believe that the movie has a possibility of crossing $500 million and more if the upcoming releases, such as Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth, do not perform as well as expected. Besides Brad Pitt, F1 The Movie also features Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzeles and Kerry Condon in key supporting roles. The racing drama follows the story of Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a New York City-based Formula One driver who left racing following a horrible crash. After his forced retirement from Formula One, he started racing in other disciplines and working as a taxi driver. Decades later, he returns to the high-stakes world of racing with only one wish to prove himself again. He is brought back to Formula One by his friend and former teammate, Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, to train his team. Sonny is tasked with training a rookie driver, Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris. In addition to the lead cast, the film will also feature professional F1 drivers such as Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, among others. Released on June 27, F1 is running in theatres. First Published:

Daily Briefing: India-US trade talks and the July 9 deadline

Good morning, The second of the five-Test England vs India series begins tomorrow. Team India has yet to announce its Playing XI, though whispers suggest Jasprit Bumrah, the world's leading fast bowler, will probably sit this one out. This is part of a workload management strategy, which will see Bumrah, previously troubled by a long-standing back issue, play only three Tests. India may turn to Washington Sundar, an all-rounder, as a solution for weak bowling and a struggling lower order. Sundar practised with two senior spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, at the nets on Monday, and even batted — all under the watchful eyes of Bumrah and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Interestingly, another all-rounder, Nitish Reddy, was also getting match-ready on Monday. National sports editor Sandeep Dwivedi, reporting from Birmingham, has all the details. On that note, let's get to the rest of today's edition. Indian negotiators have extended their ongoing stay in the United States to resolve the differences that are hindering the interim trade deal. The July 9 deadline for Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs to return looms large over these talks. Quid pro quo: India has sought the elimination of reciprocal tariffs and guarantees of no future tariffs. It also aims to remove the US's additional duties on goods such as steel, aluminium, and auto components. Notably, India has sought zero duty on electronic exports to the US, despite Trump's earlier criticism of smartphone companies selling products in America that are manufactured elsewhere. The US, meanwhile, wants to open up Indian sectors, including automobiles, whisky, and agricultural products. Point of contention: The US demand to access India's market to sell its genetically modified (GM) products and to remove a crucial regulation regarding dairy products has led to tense discussions and even triggered protests from voices back home. On the money trail: In 1,960 swift and silent transactions, a staggering Rs 3.72 crore was credited and Rs 3.33 crore debited, moving in and out of a single bank account linked to an obscure outfit: the Jeevika Foundation, based in East Delhi. Remarkably, not one of these transfers triggered an alert from the bank. This 'mule' account now lies at the centre of at least six investigations by different state police forces, all tied to a growing web of digital arrest scams and cyber frauds. In Part 2 of our investigation, reporter Ritu Sarin interviews several bank officials to trace the money. Although financial institutions claim they conducted due diligence and adhered to KYC norms, the reality on the ground reveals a much darker story — one where warning signs were ignored and accountability was evaded. Disposed: More than 40 years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, the process of relocating the 337 tonnes of waste from the now-defunct Union Carbide factory began only this year, on January 1. The matter was finally concluded on Monday, with the entire waste incinerated at a disposal plant in Pithampur. Connect: Bijapur, a sprawling 6,500 sq km district in Chhattisgarh, has been one of the hardest-hit areas by Left Wing Extremism. As defence operations against the Maoists intensify, the local administration has been given an additional task. Over the past 18 months, they have been working to bring villagers closer to the mainstream, one mobile tower at a time. The task has proven to be challenging due to Maoist resistance. The law of the land: The 42nd Amendment to the Constitution, enacted under the Indira Gandhi government, introduced sweeping changes to the document. Most of these were reversed by the 44th Amendment during the subsequent Janata government. The Preamble, which now included the words 'secular' and 'socialist', however, was left unchanged. Recently, the use of the word has sparked fresh debate, with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar calling it a 'sacrilege to the spirit of Sanatan'. However, as my colleague Apurva Vishwanath explains, the Indian Constitution had long embodied the spirit of secularism even without the explicit mention. Thali index: Recent poverty estimates for India present a pretty optimistic picture. In most accounts, the calculation involves estimating the level of consumption expenditure sufficient for minimum calorie intake. But economists Pulapre Balakrishnan and Aman Raj suggest that this measurement may need revision. Their research shows that up to 40% of the rural population and 10% of the urban population could not afford two thalis a day in 2023-24. Band, baaja, budget: In a land of extravagant weddings, the Ahir community in Gujarat's Bhuj is setting a counter trend. The community's supreme body has decided to do away with the 'show-off' and 'competition' during wedding ceremonies. To alleviate the financial burden on families and preserve the community's traditions, a new resolution imposes limits on clothing and gold expenses, as well as the food menu. Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York mayoral elections, an Internet sensation and the chosen Gen Z messiah, has proven that a politician's love life need not be a scandal or a secret. Mamdani has been candid about meeting his wife on Hinge and even made it a political issue. But more crucially, Mamdani tapped into the reality that young voters who meet partners online, build careers through LinkedIn, and organise communities via social media seek leaders operating in the same digital ecosystem.
