Who is Mira Murati? Ex-OpenAI exec rejects $1 billion offer from Mark Zuckerberg to join Meta AI

Minta day ago
Albanian-American tech visionary Mira Murati, who was behind some of the most significant breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, is back on spotlight. The former OpenAI CTO has reportedly rejected a lush $1 billion offer from Mark Zuckerberg's Meta.
As per a report by Wired, Mira Murati's AI startup Thinking Machines Lab was offered $1 billion by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta to join its AI Superintelligence team.
'So far at Thinking Machines Lab, not a single person has taken the offer,' Murati was quoted as saying by the outlet.
According to the report, Mira Murati's team members were offered packages that ranged between $200 to $1 billion — every single one of which was rejected as employees refused to join the Meta Superintelligence Lab.
Who is Mira Murati?
Mira Murati, a trailblazer in the advancement of AI, was born in Albania in 1988. At the age of 16, Mira Murati received a scholarship to attend high school at Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Mira Murati has two undergraduate degrees — Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Colby College and a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Dartmouth College.
Before joining OpenAI, Murati held various roles in pioneering companies like Goldman Sachs, Zodiac Aerospace, and Tesla. According to her LinkedIn profile, Mira Murati joined Sam Altman's OpenAI in 2018.
She was named the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI quickly, and is credited with leading key projects like ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Codex — technologies that have changed the world.
Mira Murati also became a CEO of OpenAI for three days after Sam Altman was removed from the post following a boardroom drama at the company. He was reinstated five days later, following which Murati returned to her role at CTO of OpenAI.
Murati, who started Thinking Machines after an abrupt exit from OpenAI last September, is among a growing list of former executives from the ChatGPT maker who have launched AI startups.
Thinking Machines Lab, the artificial intelligence startup founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati, said earlier this month that it has raised $2 billion in funding.

Superintelligence Will Create A New Era For Humanity And Empowerment, Mark Zuckerberg Says

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that the company is making major strides toward developing "superintelligent" AI, calling it a transformative goal for the future. In a memo shared ahead of Meta's quarterly earnings, Zuckerberg said the tech giant is pouring billions into AI research-recruiting top talent, acquiring startups, and building massive data centres. He told investors that this investment is already showing promising results, positioning Meta at the forefront of the global race to advance powerful artificial intelligence. "In some ways this will be a new era for humanity, but in others it's just a continuation of historical trends," he shared in the memo. "As recently as 200 years ago, 90% of people were farmers growing food to survive. Advances in technology have steadily freed much of humanity to focus less on subsistence and more on the pursuits we choose. At each step, people have used our newfound productivity to achieve more than was previously possible, pushing the frontiers of science and health, as well as spending more time on creativity, culture, relationships, and enjoying life," he said. "I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose," he added. According to The New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg told investors that superintelligence is more advanced than the human brain and will enhance nearly every aspect of daily life. He explained that AI is already helping Meta's advertising by making social media feeds more engaging, keeping users on the platform longer. Additionally, he said AI will act as a personal assistant for users, ushering in "a new era of individual empowerment." The main way people will interact with superintelligence will be through Meta's smart glasses, which have cameras and software that can shoot and process videos, Mr Zuckerberg said. "I think that if history is a guide, then an even more important role will be how superintelligence empowers people to be more creative, develop culture and communities, connect with each other, and lead more fulfilling lives," he said. Mr Zuckerberg's comments came as Meta reported revenue of $47.5 billion for the second quarter, up 22 percent from a year earlier and above Wall Street estimates of $44.8 billion, according to data compiled by FactSet. Profit was $18.3 billion, up 36 percent from a year earlier and surpassing estimates of $15.1 billion.

Microsoft valuation surges above $4 trillion as AI lifts stocks

Shares of Microsoft spiked Thursday following blowout quarterly results, lifting the tech giant into the previously unprecedented $4 trillion club along with Nvidia, another artificial intelligence standout. The landmark valuation is the latest sign of growing bullishness about an AI investment boom that market watchers believe is still in the early stages, even as companies like Microsoft plan $100 billion or more in annual capital spending to add new capacity. Microsoft reported profit of $27.2 billion on revenue of $76.4 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter, capping another year of growth amid massive customer interest in the company's cutting-edge AI capacity. Shortly after midday, Microsoft shares were up 4.3%, giving it a market capitalisation slightly under $4 trillion after earlier eclipsing the benchmark. "Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. "We're innovating across the tech stack to help customers adapt and grow in this new era." The results drew plaudits from Wall Street analysts on an earnings conference call at which Nadella boasted that the company had opened new data centres across six continents in the last year and touted major contracts for global companies like Nestle and Barclays. Microsoft was one of the first tech giants to double down on artificial intelligence when the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 rocked the tech industry. Microsoft has had a strategic partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI since 2019, holding rights to its intellectual property. At the heart of the results was a stunning 39% surge in Azure, the company's legacy cloud computing platform, which is getting "supercharged" with AI, said Angelo Zino, technology analyst at CFRA Research. Zino attributed "just about all of" Microsoft's recent surge in valuation to AI. While Nvidia is part of a wave of tech companies that have risen to prominence with the AI boom of the last few years, Microsoft has long been among America's corporate elite, joining the prestigious Dow index in 1999, more than a decade after introducing the once-revolutionary Windows. The company's revenue base includes such workplace mainstays as the Outlook email platform and the LinkedIn career website. Microsoft also has a significant gaming division with the Xbox console. All of these businesses are set to benefit from Microsoft's AI advantages. "We view (Microsoft) as kind of the enterprise king," said Zino. "What AI does is it provides new growth opportunities for this company." For all of fiscal 2025, Microsoft reported revenues of $281.7 billion, up 15% from the prior year. Microsoft's revenues have more than doubled from 2018, when they were $110.4 billion. Zino thinks Microsoft is poised for a comparable run over the next six or seven years when it could see annual revenue growth of 10% as greater use of AI creates even more opportunity. The biggest risk to this outlook, and to the AI boom generally, would be "if we get to the point where supply for AI exceeds demand," Zino said. "That could put pressure on pricing for cloud computing and space."

Trade war: No F-35 jets from US for India? Govt mulls next steps after 25% tariff shock

The government is exploring options to respond to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, but has ruled out any immediate retaliation, Bloomberg reported. India has told US officials that it is not interested in acquiring the F-35 stealth fighter jets, despite continued American efforts to expand defence exports to New Delhi, Bloomberg reported. The Modi government is unlikely to approve any major new defence deals with the US in the near future, the report said. The report also says that officials in New Delhi were "shocked and disappointed" by Trump's tariff announcement on Wednesday. However, the government wants to keep trade talks on track and is looking at options to increase purchases from its largest trading partner. India is also considering expanding imports of natural gas, communication equipment, and gold from the US, the Bloomberg report said. But no defence purchases are being planned. 'Despite considering a boost in purchases of American goods, the Modi government is unlikely to buy additional defense equipments from the US, a key demand from Trump,' Bloomberg quoted officials familiar with the matter as saying. India has informed the US that it is not keen to buy the F-35 stealth fighter jets, Bloomberg reported. During PM Modi's visit to the White House in February, Trump had offered to sell the jets to India. Trump, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods starting August 1. He also mentioned a penalty for India's purchases of Russian military equipment and energy. "India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any country," Trump said. "Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of energy, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine — All things not good!" he added. In another post, Trump said: "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!"
