Steven Kwan out of Guardians' lineup against the Athletics with right wrist soreness

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan was out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics due to nagging right wrist soreness.
Manager Stephen Vogt said Kwan's status is day-to-day and that he has been dealing with wrist issues for over a month. Kwan left a May 28 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to wrist inflammation.
After playing in Tuesday night's All Star Game, Kwan met with doctors on Wednesday and received an injection.
Kwan's infield hit in the ninth inning drove in Bobby Witt Jr. with the tying run in the All-Star Game. The contest was tied at 6 after nine innings and was decided by a swing-off for the first time, which was won by the National League.
'We encouraged him to go play in the All-Star Game. He earned the right. We knew this was coming,' Vogt said.
It is only the sixth missed game for Kwan, who is batting .285 with six home runs and 32 RBIs.
Pitcher Shane Bieber will make his next rehab start on Tuesday for either Triple-A Columbus or Single-A Lake County.
Bieber — working his way back from Tommy John surgery in April 2024 — tossed two scoreless innings and struck out five on Tuesday in an Arizona Complex League outing. It was the first game action for the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner since he experienced soreness during a bullpen session on June 3.
Infielder Gabriel Arias began a rehab assignment for Triple-A Columbus on Friday night. Arias sprained his left ankle against St. Louis on June 29.

Right-hander Nic Enright was recalled from Columbus after Paul Sewald was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday due to a right shoulder strain.
Prospect Travis Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in last year's amateur draft, was activated off the injured list by Double-A Akron after missing two months due to an oblique strain.
The second baseman has a .252 batting average with four home runs, 17 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 33 games for the RubberDucks.

After ending streaks, Yankees vie for series win vs. Blue Jays

(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) The visiting New York Yankees aim to ride the momentum from a dramatic win into the rubber match of their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night. Ben Rice snapped a tie with a home run in the ninth inning against Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman in the Yankees' 5-4 win on Tuesday night. The Yankees had dropped five straight games in Toronto this season, including a 4-1 loss Monday in the opener of the series. 'We got the monkey off our back a little bit there,' said Yankees Devin Williams, who pitched the bottom of the ninth to earn the save on Tuesday. 'I said earlier, 'We played five games here and haven't come away with a win once.' So, it was nice to have a lead and be able to lock it down and leave with a win.' 'It's huge,' Rice said. 'Obviously, we lost five in a row to these guys, so coming back and getting a win here gives us some good momentum heading into tomorrow.' The Yankees snapped Toronto's 11-game home winning streak and moved to within three games of the first-place Blue Jays in the American League East. Momentum is said to be the next day's pitcher and the Yankees have a good candidate to provide it on Wednesday with scheduled starter Max Fried (11-3, 2.43 ERA). The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in five career starts against the Blue Jays. Fried left his last start before the All-Star break on July 12 with a blister on his left index finger. He was considered ready to start on Wednesday. He will be facing a strong mound opponent in right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-4, 3.89), who is scheduled to start for Toronto. He is 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees and is 1-1 with a 5.56 ERA in two starts versus them this season. In addition to Rice's big blast on Wednesday, the Yankees got two doubles, a homer and a couple superb catches in left field from Cody Bellinger. Jazz Chisholm Jr. belted a three-run homer on Tuesday. The Yankees overcame another throwing error by shortstop Anthony Volpe that led to two unearned runs in the sixth inning. Rice could not make the scoop on the one-bounce throw. Volpe and Oswald Peraza also contributed two unearned runs to the Blue Jays with throwing errors on Monday. The Yankees made the most of their chances, going 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranding three runners. The Blue Jays were 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Toronto's bullpen was solid leading to Hoffman, who was pitching for the fourth time in five days. His use is a sign of playing in meaningful games in a division race and could indicate where Toronto's priorities might be at the trade deadline. 'He does such a good job of letting us know how he feels,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'We're at the point now where guys are going to have to be pushed a little bit. I didn't want to start the ninth inning with someone else and then feel the urge to bring Jeff in. I'd rather give them a clean inning. Just a pull heater there to Rice. They can hit home runs, that's what they do.'

'Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' a statement from Sinner's team said Wednesday. Last year, Sinner tested positive twice for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid in March; the case wasn't made public until August, shortly before the U.S. Open, which he ended up winning for the second of his four Grand Slam titles. He initially was completely cleared, based on the defense that he accidentally was exposed to the banned substance, Clostebol, via a massage from his then-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner said his fitness trainer at the time, Ferrara, purchased a product in Italy and gave it to Naldi for a cut on Naldi's finger. Naldi then treated Sinner while not wearing gloves. Sinner then fired Naldi and Ferrara, and Ferrara was hired briefly by Matteo Berrettini, another Italian player. The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the exoneration, and Sinner agreed to serve a three-month ban that ended right before the Italian Open in May of this year. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this month, will return to action at the Cincinnati Open next month as he prepares to defend his U.S. Open title. Canada Sunshine Girls Olympics Sunshine Girls Columnists

Frank Reich excited about Bryce Young's resurgence after ‘terrible' start to QB's NFL career

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Stanford interim head football coach Frank Reich was walking to dinner in downtown Charlotte with four of his Cardinal players on Monday night when he heard a familiar voice from a passing car. 'Coach Reich, coach Reich!' the voice said. Soon the car stopped and pulled over and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young popped his head out the window to say hello and catch up with the coach who drafted him No. 1 overall in the 2023. Reich, viewed as a developer of quarterbacks, had been entrusted with Young's growth under center but the relationship was cut short early when Panthers owner David Tepper fired Reich just 11 games into his first season after a 1-10 start to the 2023 season. Young struggled under Reich's tutelage, something that carried over to 2024 when the former Heisman Trophy winner was benched two games into the season by new coach Dave Canales. Young would remain on the bench until veteran Andy Dalton sprained his thumb in a car accident in late October, allowing him to reclaim the starting job. Young made the most of his second chance. He finished the season with a flurry, completing 65% of his passes for 612 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions in his final three starts. Young accounted for five TDs — three passing and two rushing — in the Panthers' season-ending 44-38 overtime win against Atlanta, giving the franchise hope that he had finally turned the corner. 'I'm happy for Bryce,' Reich said Tuesday at ACC media days of Young's resurgence. 'We all know he was a good player.' Reich said the way things started in the NFL for Young was 'terrible.' 'It was terrible for him; it was terrible for all of us who were a part of it,' Reich said. 'There were so many things to unwind there before it could get going in the right direction and that just takes time. Sometimes you are given time as a head coach and sometimes you're not.' When asked what he meant by 'things to unwind,' Reich declined to elaborate, indicating he was only making a general statement. Reich said he has no regrets about his decision to start Young as a rookie in Week 1. 'To me I still hold the philosophy that if you're the first pick in the NFL draft, you're starting,' Reich said. 'To me that is a universal football principle. You're drafted number one, you're starting week one. Now if the rest of the roster isn't ready to support you, that's a different question. And sometimes it just takes a younger guy time to develop.' Young will open his third NFL season as Carolina unquestioned starting quarterback when the Panthers begin training camp on Wednesday in Charlotte. ___ AP NFL:
