Guardians Make Steven Kwan Trade Decision Amid Rumors, Per Insider

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. For the Cleveland Guardians, the main rumors seemingly surround All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase and Gold Glove outfielder Steven Kwan. While trading Kwan or Clase could boost the future in Cleveland, it would be a tough pill to swallow. Clase's future is seemingly up in the air still, but ESPN's Buster Olney recently suggested the Guardians wouldn't look to trade Kwan this season, noting the idea as "unlikely." Cox/Getty Images "The player asked about the most on the Guardians' roster is Steven Kwan, but given that he's 2 1/2 years away from free agency, it's unlikely he'll be traded, according to sources," Olney wrote in a post to Twitter/X on Tuesday. "His slash line this year: .288/.352/.398, with 11 stolen bases." Trading Kwan never seemed to make sense for Cleveland. This team went deep into the postseason last year and lost to the eventual American League pennant-winning New York Yankees. It's not like the Guardians need to blow their roster up. If Kwan was on an expiring contract, this idea would make sense, but he's not. There are still two additional years of arbitration left on his deal for the Guardians to take advantage of. Kwan is a building block in Cleveland. The team is talented. It's more likely Cleveland will give him a contract extension in the offseason rather than trade him right now. Mets' Biggest Trade Deadline Addition Could Come Out Of Left Field

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets are bound to be aggressive at the upcoming trade deadline. They desperately need to add pitching, both to the starting rotation and the bullpen, but there are a few other holes on the team. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Mets as one of the best fits in a potential blockbuster trade for Cleveland Guardians star left fielder Steven Kwan. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 06: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field on July 06, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 06: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field on July 06, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio."An All-Star the past two years and Gold Glove winner in all three of his previous big league seasons, Kwan is a do-everything left fielder with elite bat-to-ball skills and two years of club control after 2025," Passan wrote. "Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see whether teams are willing to blow them away with offers." A massive trade like this would come out of left field, as the Mets haven't been connected to Kwan up until this point. There were a few rumblings that New York could pursue Luis Robert Jr. or Jarren Duran, but those have since gone away. Now, it's Kwan that the front office could target to fill a hole in the outfield. Adding Kwan to the top of the lineup with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso would be a nightmare for opposing pitchers to attack. There's no doubt the Mets will be aggressive at the deadline, so it would make sense for them to pursue a deal like this. But a trade for Kwan would be one of luxury for the Mets. If New York can add to its starting rotation and bullpen while saving enough prospect capital to swing a Kwan trade, this is the kind of deal that could launch the Mets toward the World Series. Padres Predicted To Trade For Gold Glove Outfielder To Fill Massive Void

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently made the bold prediction that the San Diego Padres would swing a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Guardians to acquire outfielder Steven Kwan ahead of the trade deadline. "Shifting back now to prospective buyers, it sure seems like the San Diego Padres want to turn their left field question mark into an exclamation point," Rymer wrote. "They've reportedly been thirsting after Jarren Duran, with Dennis Lin of The Athletic writing that the Padres are 'enamored' with the 2024 All-Star Game MVP. But as long as the Boston Red Sox are contending, it's hard to see how they and the Friars are supposed to match up on a deal. So instead, it wouldn't be surprising if the Padres pivoted to Steven Kwan. "The 27-year-old is the best defensive left fielder in the game, as well as the best pure hitter this side of Luis Arraez. If the two of them were to team up in San Diego, the Padres would have MLB's two best contact merchants atop their lineup." CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 21: Brayan Rocchio #4 and Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrate their team's 10-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Progressive Field on July 21, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 21: Brayan Rocchio #4 and Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrate their team's 10-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Progressive Field on July 21, 2025 in Cleveland, Padres desperately need outfield help. While they've been closely linked to Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, that deal doesn't seem too likely at this point. Kwan is arguably the best outfielder on the market if the Guardians shop him. Not only would he add an elite contact bat at the top of the lineup ahead of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jackson Merrill, but he would add an elite glove beside two other elite outfield defenders. San Diego's outfield would practically be turned into a no-fly zone. But this idea largely centers around how willing the Guardians are to move Kwan when he still has two years of arbitration on his contract. If the Guardians are open to the idea, the Padres are seemingly the best fit to add the star. More MLB: Astros Landing $8 Million Slugger Would Boost Lineup Ahead Of Trade Deadline

Padres Outfield Trade Rumors Heating Up As Deadline Approaches

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres have a massive hole in left field. Fernando Tatis Jr. mans right field with superstar potential. Jackson Merrill is one of the best young center fielders in baseball. But left field has been a revolving door of below-average play in San Diego. Because of this, the Padres have been linked to numerous big trades to fill that void. The most common name mentioned closely with San Diego is Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, but it's unclear if there's anything brewing between the two teams. If that idea falls through, ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Padres as one of the "best fits" in a trade for Cleveland Guardians star Steven Kwan. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Brandon Lowe #8 of the Tampa Bay Rays and Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians look on prior to the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15,... "Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see whether teams are willing to blow them away with offers." It's unclear whether the Guardians are looking to trade Kwan this year, but if they are, it would likely take a large haul to land him. The Padres have a few top prospects who are likely untouchable, but beyond the top two or three prospects, San Diego could move anybody to land Kwan. This idea could make sense if the Padres are willing to give up multiple star prospects, but it doesn't make as much sense as a trade for Duran. The Guardians don't have much reason to trade Kwan, considering he has multiple years of affordable team control left on his deal. Could Trade for 'Do-Everything' $4 Million Gold Glove Outfielder Be Answer to Dodgers' Prayers?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently made the bold suggestion that the Los Angeles Dodgers could be one of the best fits in a blockbuster trade for Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan ahead of the trade deadline. "An All-Star the past two years and Gold Glove winner in all three of his previous big league seasons, Kwan is a do-everything left fielder with elite bat-to-ball skills and two years of club control after 2025," Passan wrote. "Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see whether teams are willing to blow them away with offers." But does this idea make any sense? ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians steals second base during the ninth inning of the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians steals second base during the ninth inning of the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images It does, but only under some specific circumstances. First, let's look at it from the Guardians' point of view. Cleveland doesn't need to trade Kwan because he has two additional years of arbitration left on his contract. The front office could hold onto him and continue building their team with him at the forefront. But if the Dodgers are willing to give up a haul, potentially including former top prospects Bobby Miller and James Outman, the Guardians might be inclined to move Kwan. The important thing to note in a potential Kwan trade is that the Guardians would need to add big league talent or prospects who are close to the big leagues in order for a deal to make sense. Obviously, this would be a great addition for the Dodgers. Kwan could play every day outfield in Los Angeles for the next two and a half seasons and set the table for the heavy hitters in the lineup. It's going to come down to how aggressive the Dodgers are and what they're willing to give up. More MLB: Jarren Duran Trade? MLB Insider Lists Braves As 'Best Fit'
