EU is complicit in Israeli crimes through inaction
Israel has been repeatedly accused of war crimes amid its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. West Jerusalem launched its military campaign in the enclave in response to the October 7, 2023, attack in which the Palestinian militants killed 1,200 people and took over 200 hostages.
Since then, more than 60,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Gaza, according to the enclave's health ministry. West Jerusalem also faced accusations of obstructing humanitarian aid in the area.
According to Borrell, a third of Israeli bombs falling on Gaza 'are made in Europe.'
'Many member states simply don't want to impose sanctions on Israel,' Borrell told the EU Observer in an interview published on Monday. He also believes that the EU Commission head, Ursula von der Leyen, also plays a major role in stalling the process as she simply does not put the issue of sanctions against Israel on the agenda and prevents an open debate on its within the commission.
According to the former top diplomat, Brussels only imposed restrictions against 'maybe 20 people' over the Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank, despite such policies being considered illegal by the international community. 'We sanctioned thousands in Russia for less,' he said, adding that restrictions considered by Brussels against West Jerusalem are nothing but 'a bad joke.'
'What [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu has done in Gaza surpasses many war crimes we've condemned,' Borrell stated, calling the situation in Gaza an example of 'horrors' that are 'greater than others.'
According to Borrell, further inaction in the face of Israel's violations could cost the EU its international image and reputation. 'There's a growing sense that inaction is starting to make us responsible for what's happening.'

Netanyahu decides on full occupation of Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ministers that he will seek cabinet backing for a plan to fully occupy Gaza, despite objections from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), The Times of Israel reported on Monday. Israel controlled Gaza for 38 years, from 1967 until 2005. After the IDF and Israeli settlers withdrew from the enclave, it was left to be governed by the Palestinian Authority, which also controlled parts of the occupied West Bank. Hamas took control of Gaza after it won elections there in 2006. Since then, no elections have been held. Several ministers reportedly said Netanyahu referred to the term 'occupation of the Strip' during private conversations, reflecting his vision for expanding military operations. It marks a significant shift in tone as the government prepares to discuss the future of the campaign. 'The die is cast – we are going for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip... There will be operations even in areas where hostages are being held. If the IDF chief of staff doesn't agree, he should resign,' a senior official close to Netanyahu was quoted by Ynet as saying. The IDF currently claims to hold approximately 75% of the territory. Under the new plan, the military would be expected to occupy the remaining area as well, bringing the entire enclave under Israeli control. The Times of Israel claims the IDF is against the idea of taking all of Gaza under control. The military believes it could take years to dismantle all Hamas infrastructure. Additionally, this approach could put hostages at risk of execution if troops move too close to where they are being held. The conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted in October 2023 with a surprise attack by Hamas in southern Israel, leaving about 1,200 dead and 250 taken hostage. Around 50 hostages have not yet been returned, with fewer than half believed to be still alive. Israel's counterattack has led to widespread destruction in Gaza, with the enclave's health authorities estimating at least 60,000 deaths.

India hits back at West over Russia oil trade hypocrisy
India has hit back at US and EU criticism over its oil trade with Russia, saying Western nations do even more business with Moscow themselves. The West has consistently pressured New Delhi over its energy ties with Moscow. US officials have accused India of 'effectively' financing Russia's conflict with Ukraine by purchasing large volumes of oil. India has strongly rejected the charge, saying its imports serve the national interest and help ensure affordable energy for its consumers. In a statement shared with RT on Monday, an official spokesperson said the purchases have also contributed to stability in global oil prices. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the spokesperson said, calling the targeting of India 'unjustified and unreasonable.' New Delhi also pointed to ongoing Western trade with Moscow, despite repeated pledges to sever economic ties. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' the spokesperson claimed. He cited data showing the EU traded €67.5 billion (over $78 billion) in goods with Russia in 2024 and €17.2 billion in services in 2023 – far more than India's total trade with Moscow. European imports of Russian LNG also hit a record 16.5 million tons last year, with trade extending beyond energy to fertilizers, chemicals, steel, and machinery.
