Revealed: Jurgen Klopp's warning to Pep Guardiola during summer phone call over Pep Lijnders

Yahoo7 days ago
Manchester City's Pep Guardiola was issued with a clear warning concerning his new assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders by Jurgen Klopp over the phone earlier this summer.
The behind-the-scenes reshuffle at City this summer has led to the formation of an intriguing new coaching unit under Pep Guardiola, featuring familiar names from both the Etihad Stadium and Anfield.
One appointment in particular – Pepijn Lijnders – sparked a personal call between the Manchester City manager and former Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp, during which the German issued a message that now adds another layer of intrigue to City's pre-season preparations.
Lijnders, who spent six years working alongside Klopp at Liverpool, has joined City following his dismissal from Red Bull Salzburg after a short managerial stint working as head coach at the Austrian giants. Despite his unsuccessful spell, the Dutchman remains highly respected across Europe for his tactical knowledge and innovation.
His return to Anfield in 2018 following a six-month period at NEC Nijmegen came with a crucial condition: greater influence. Lijnders made it clear he would only accept a second stint under Jurgen Klopp if it came with significantly more responsibility, including media duties and tactical preparation that reflected a shared leadership model.
'When Liverpool asked me back after NEC, I would never have taken the job if I had just been offered the chance to go back as No. 2,' Lijnders explained in 2021. 'Jurgen made me do press conferences, match discussions—basically everything he did himself.'
That desire for authority and active involvement was reportedly at the centre of a summer conversation between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp as City sought to fill the gap left by three key departures: Carlos Vicens (set-piece coach), Juanma Lillo (assistant manager), and Inigo Dominguez (technical coach). With Lijnders coming in alongside James French and Kolo Toure, the nature of his role and remit has become a significant point of interest at the club.
According to The Mirror's Simon Mullock, when Guardiola made a call to Klopp asking the former Liverpool manager whether his former assistant in Lijnders would be a good fit alongside him, the German coach warned he would quickly become restless if he was asked to do nothing more strenuous than put out cones for training.
With Guardiola known for his strong grip on tactical detail and training, the dynamic between him and Lijnders will now be under the microscope. While City have enjoyed great success under a compact and consistent coaching structure, the introduction of a high-profile assistant with strong ideas of his own could signal a new evolution.
Lijnders is expected to take a leading role in pre-match strategy and matchday management, particularly with Juanma Lillo now out of the picture. In some quarters, it has even been suggested that Guardiola is consciously expanding his coaching team's autonomy as part of a long-term soft transition toward the eventual post-Guardiola era.
Meanwhile, Lijnders' arrival could also influence City's tactical evolution across the coming season, with a greater emphasis on pressing structures and wide overloads – hallmarks of his time at Liverpool.
The next few weeks will offer early clues, starting with Manchester City's pre-season opener against Palermo in Sicily on 9 August.

Liverpool signed one of the most skilful players on the planet

Liverpool now have one of the most skilful players on the planet. It's been apparent over the last year that Arne Slot is keen on adding more skill to his attack. The Reds were brilliant last season, but they lacked a player who can take players on one vs one and create space for others. Shop the LFC Store LFC Kits Shop Now LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Someone who can also be unpredictable. This is why they had considered making a move for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the January transfer window. Ultimately, Paris Saint Germain were the ones who were able to sway the exquisite Georgian attacker, and they reaped the rewards, becoming Champions League winners and beating Liverpool along the way. For the Reds though, missing out on Kvaratskhelia may have been a silver lining. Because little did they realise, but they already had a player of his ilk, and had already signed him last summer. Richard Hughes got a lot of criticism last year when he ultimately didn't really go big on any transfer. Obviously, those critics are very silent now as Liverpool have embarked on a spending spree. But Hughes did make one transfer that could go onto retrospectively be known as one of his best deals ever. We are talking about the acquisition of Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea. Last year the 16-year-old's arrival caused shockwaves but little did we know just how good of a player Ngumoha was actually really is. There was a lot of hype, and a lot to live up to and over the course of the last year, he's done that. At academy level, Ngumoha has been averaging around 13 dribblers per 90 minutes, and completing over 50% of his attempts. Those are on par with the most skilful players on the planet. In pre-season, he's showing he can translate that to senior level as well. Against AC Milan he was one of the best players on the pitch, creating the most chances (two) and winning the most duels (4) in the first-half. Most importantly, he completed the most dribblers (3) on the same pitch that included Rafael Leao, which is impressive to say the least. Overall as we have no access to data from the Stoke City game, in which Ngumoha scored, he's played around 90 minutes for Liverpool in pre-season so far. In those 90 minutes, Ngumoha has attempted nine dribbles and completed six of them. It's a small sample size but these are the numbers he has produced at academy and youth international level, too. Ngumoha is simply one of the most skilful players on the planet already. He thrives in tight spaces and he has AC Milan's senior players not really knowing how to deal with him. There's no denying he will play more minutes for the first team next season. There's also no denying, Hughes pulled off a major coup when he signed him last summer. With Ngumoha in the side, Slot will finally have that unpredictable element. Add Florian Wirtz to the mix and Liverpool will undoubtedly be even better next season.

Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool 'prepared to go big' after Díaz sale

Liverpool Eye Record-Breaking Move for Alexander Isak Isak Sets His Sights on Anfield Liverpool are ready to launch a blockbuster move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. With Luis Díaz's €75 million switch to Bayern Munich nearing completion, Romano reveals that the Reds are 'prepared to go big for Alexander Isak' as they look to bolster Arne Slot's attacking options. Isak, for his part, is reportedly eager to join Liverpool and has made it his 'priority' this summer. Crucially, Romano adds: 'Isak, keen on the move and not even in talks with Saudi clubs. Only Liverpool.' That clear stance speaks volumes, especially given the current transfer market's Saudi riches. It's also telling that Isak has refused to join Newcastle's pre-season tour, a clear sign of his intent to push for a transfer. Newcastle Reluctant but Pressured Despite Isak's desire to leave, Newcastle remain reluctant to sell. Their resistance has been further hardened by transfer frustrations of their own — notably Brentford's refusal to sell Yoane Wissa, a player they'd hoped could be part of their succession plan. Nonetheless, pressure is mounting. The Magpies may be holding out for as much as £150 million, a figure Liverpool are unlikely to meet. Given Isak's stance and the disruption his exit could cause, Liverpool may view that price as unrealistic. Strategic Shift Post-Díaz Liverpool's intent seems to hinge on Díaz's departure. Once that move is finalised — with the Colombian winger set to fly to Germany on Monday — Liverpool will shift focus entirely to Isak. While some reports had suggested Hugo Ekitike, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, was the club's alternative to Isak, it appears the plan is now to have both players involved. Time to Back Arne Slot With Isak ruling out any approach from Saudi Arabia and Liverpool fully focused on landing the Swede, the ball is in FSG's court. Whether Liverpool go all-in with a club-record bid remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — Alexander Isak wants Liverpool, and Liverpool now want him. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis From a Liverpool supporter's perspective, this could be the type of statement signing that energises the fanbase even more in this extraordinary summer. Alexander Isak offers everything the modern forward needs — pace, intelligence, pressing ability, and a clinical edge in front of goal. His interest in joining Liverpool, while actively ignoring the Saudi cash, is a massive positive for those who still value footballing ambition over finances. Supporters may be wary of the suggested £150m fee — especially after recent spending — but context matters. With Luis Díaz likely departing, and Núñez's inconsistent form raising long-term doubts, fans will see Isak as the ideal replacement. He's Premier League-proven, still only 25, and seemingly wants the move. The arrival of Hugo Ekitike has helped calm concerns about squad depth, but the idea of both Ekitike and Isak leading the line gives real optimism. If Isak is the priority signing as Romano reports, then fans would expect the club to act decisively and not haggle over Newcastle's inflated demands for too long. This is the type of deal that would signal a bold new chapter at Anfield — one where Liverpool back their manager with serious firepower. From the stands at Anfield to the wider fanbase, this move would resonate as a clear commitment to challenging again.

Andy Robertson Responds to Liverpool Vice-Captain Rumours

Robertson, Rumour and Role: Shadows of Leadership at Liverpool In the humidity of Hong Kong's neon sky, Liverpool drifted through a pre-season spell that felt less like football and more like theatre. Against AC Milan, the match played out with a rhythm that twisted between purpose and mystery, leaving supporters with more questions than answers. Among them, one hums the loudest through the corridors of Anfield: who will become vice-captain now that Trent Alexander-Arnold has departed for Madrid's marble halls? This isn't a straightforward football tale. It's textured, laden with quiet glances and unspoken conversations. In the stillness following the Reds' defeat, a whisper took form — Andy Robertson. The Scotland captain, known for his relentless energy and razor-sharp edge down the left, was rumoured to be next in line. Photo: IMAGO Robertson Reacts in Shadows After the game, Robertson was asked directly about the role. The Scot responded, but it wasn't quite an answer, more of a laugh echoing through red mist. 'I've seen rumours, I've had texts and I've had people congratulating me, but I've not heard anything!' Robertson told The Anfield Wrap, a grin tugging at the corner of his words. 'We're obviously part of the leadership group, me, Mo [Salah], Ali [Alisson] and obviously Virgil being captain. The manager's not spoken to any of us yet, obviously we've lost Trent as vice captain so that role is available. But we do what we do, the four of us are a good tight-knit group.' It sounds casual. But listen closely, and there's something else beneath it. Something unsaid. Like an answer that's already written but waiting for the right time to be spoken aloud. Slot's Silence and the Decision Already Made Behind the curtain, Arne Slot already knows the name. Liverpool's head coach confirmed the decision exists. But like a magician holding a card behind his back, he refused to show it. 'It is probably already decided but I'm not telling it here yet who will be the new vice-captain,' Slot revealed after the match. 'But it's clear we have more than a few that can take that role.' Slot, who led Liverpool to Premier League glory in his very first season, operates not just with tactical brilliance but a sort of mysticism. He sees leadership not as a badge but a presence, a force humming through the training ground and dressing room alike. Leadership Beyond the Armband At Liverpool, vice-captaincy isn't only about titles. It's in gestures, eye contact, the silence before the storm. Robertson, Alisson, Salah — these figures move with gravity. Virgil van Dijk may wear the captain's armband, but the soul of leadership is diffused, like the red lights of Anfield spilling into fog. As rumours ripple and the truth waits, Liverpool prepare for what's next. The Premier League beckons again. The ghost of what was and the shape of what's coming both linger at Melwood, now under Slot's calm, cryptic command. Whether Robertson steps forward or remains part of the chorus, the play goes on. And Liverpool, under Slot's gaze, keep walking that line between clarity and dream.
