Shreyas Talpade Gets Interim Protection From Arrest In ‘Multi-Level Marketing' Scam Case
Last Updated: Shreyas Talpade gets interim protection from arrest by the Supreme Court in a multi-level marketing scam case; FIR includes charges of cheating, fraud. Shreyas Talpade has been granted interim protection from arrest in connection to the infamous cheating and multi-crore chit fund scam, on Monday, July 21, by the Supreme Court. The case involves charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and property transfer through deception. Along with Shreyas, veteran actor Alok Nath's name has also been mentioned. According to the latest update from the PTI agency, a bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and K.V. Viswanathan has asked the Haryana Police and other parties to respond to the petition Shreyas filed with the apex court, challenging the FIR registered against him. Earlier, the case was registered on January 22 under Sections 316(2), 318(2), and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Ajeet Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), Murthal, told ThePrint that the names of the two actors were included in the list of accused mentioned by the complainant in their statement to the police. Singh stated, 'The main complaint is against the society that is alleged to have duped people of their money by luring them to invest. We will have to investigate what role, if any, is ascribed to Shreyas Talpade and Alok Nath." Shreyas Talpade has been in the midst of controversy for a while now. After this complaint against him, he was named in a new multi-crore chit fund fraud case in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district. However, his team issued a three-part official statement to clear the air. 'It is deeply unfortunate that in today's world, a person's hard-earned reputation appears to be vulnerable to undue tarnishment by unfounded rumours. Recent reports alleging Mr. Shreyas Talpade's involvement in fraud or misconduct are completely false, baseless, and devoid of any merit whatsoever," a part of the statement read. On the work front, Shreyas Talpade was last seen in Kangana Ranaut's directorial Emergency. It is set during India's Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, a time marked by severe restrictions on civil liberties and press freedom. The film also features Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, Anupam Kher, the late actor Satish Kaushik, Vishak Nair, and others, with a screenplay penned by Ritesh Shah. Folk singer booked for song criticising Uttarakhand government
Garhwali folk singer Pawan Semwal was booked for allegedly 'promoting enmity' and 'insulting the modesty of women' in a song allegedly criticising Uttarakhand's Bharatiya Janata Party government over unemployment and crimes against women, The Times of India reported on Sunday. The song titled 'Tin Bhi Ni Thami', which translates to 'cannot handle it even for a bit', was shared by Semwal on his YouTube channel. He also posted a link to the video on Facebook. The song linked the rise in the number of liquor shops to an increase in prostitution in the state, The Times of India reported. Following the Facebook post, a resident of Dehradun had filed a complaint against Semwal on Saturday, alleging that the lyrics were offensive to all women in the state. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case at the Patel Nagar police station. Inspector Chandrabhan Singh Adhikhari, the station house officer at Patel Nagar, said that the case was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to promoting enmity between groups, making statements conducive to public mischief and using words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of women. Semwal, who was in Delhi, was summoned for questioning on Sunday. 'After a detailed questioning, he was served a notice under Section 35(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita under which he must appear before the police whenever summoned for probe,' The Times of India quoted Adhikari as saying. 'He was also warned not to repeat such acts.' The song had been uploaded to YouTube three days ago and was taken down soon after. Semwal re-uploaded the video on Saturday but deleted it again following the police action. In a purported video statement posted on social media, Semwal said that he had faced 'immense' pressure from the police to remove the song after its initial release. The Opposition Congress accused the BJP of silencing dissent. 'The lyrics of Semwal's song are much more than what is being projected,' the newspaper quoted Congress' Uttarakhand chief Karan Mahara as saying. 'The song highlights things, which the government does not want to hear. It is the voice of every resident who wants to see change.' The BJP said that the song was 'part of [Congress'] agenda of mudslinging', The Times of India reported. 'The government has no role in registering the case,' said BJP state Spokesperson Manveer Singh Chauhan, adding that the 'law will take its own course'.

Odisha: 15-year-old girl set on fire by three men in Puri district
A 15-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire by three unidentified persons while on her way to a friend's house in Odisha's Puri district on Saturday, The Indian Express reported. The girl has suffered 70% to 75% burn injuries and her condition is stable, Executive Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar Dr Ashutosh Biswas told The New Indian Express. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said that the girl has been airlifted to AIIMS, Delhi for ' the best possible treatment ', adding that the state government would ensure all necessary support to the teenager. A preliminary investigation found that three persons on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted her at an isolated spot, tied a handkerchief around her face, doused her with a flammable substance and set her on fire before fleeing, The Indian Express quoted the police as saying. Locals took her to Pipili hospital in Puri, from where she was shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. A special team has been formed to investigate the case, Deputy Inspector General of Police Pinak Mishra told The Indian Express. 'We will record the victim's statement once her condition improves,' the newspaper quoted Mishra as saying. 'The police have been taking information from her friends, relatives and other locals.' He added that a few persons have been detained for questioning, The Hindu reported. The incident comes almost a week after an undergraduate student set herself on fire on July 12 after her complaint of sexual harassment by a faculty member in Balasore district allegedly went unaddressed. She died of her injuries on July 14. Opposition slams state government Opposition leaders have condemned the incident, saying that it points to a 'deep systemic failure of governance' in the Bharatiya-Janata Party-ruled state. Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that he was 'deeply anguished' by the attack and claimed that such 'unthinkable' acts against women were now being reported almost daily in Odisha. Referring also to the recent case in Balasore, where an undergraduate student died after setting herself on fire, the Biju Janata Dal leader said these were not 'stray' incidents. 'These incidents occurring with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance,' he said on X. 'It shows that criminals have become emboldened under the present government and are not worried about being punished.' Patnaik also claimed that Odisha was becoming increasingly unsafe for women. Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das alleged that the BJP government and the state administration had become ' mere spectators ', while such incidents are occurring repeatedly, The Hindu reported. 'Girl students and women are unsafe in the state,' Das claimed. 'Criminals no longer fear the government, administration and police…Yet, the BJP government, utterly insensitive, continues to beat the drum of good governance.' His party colleague, KC Venugopal, said that another 'horrific' crime had come to light while Odisha was still reeling under the shock of the Balasore incident. 'How deep must the systemic rot in the police system be for criminals to set a girl on fire in broad daylight with such impunity?' he asked on X. 'With every passing hour, Odisha is becoming an even more unsafe place for women.' While Odisha is still reeling under the shock of the Balasore incident, another horrific crime has come to light. How deep must the systemic rot in the police system be for criminals to set a girl on fire in broad daylight with such impunity?
