Civilians In Gaza Face Heavy Attacks While Seeking Food At Aid Centres: UN Agency

Barnama08-06-2025
ISTANBUL, June 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported Saturday that civilians suffering from hunger in the Gaza Strip have come under heavy Israeli attacks while seeking food at aid distribution centres, reported Anadolu Ajansi (AA).
UNRWA cited in a statement the testimony of a Palestinian survivor of an attack on a distribution centre in Rafah, which had been established by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) under the guise of humanitarian aid.
The statement noted that starving Palestinians, in their desperate search for food, are being exposed to intense Israeli assaults at the so-called distribution centers, putting their lives at severe risk.

CAP backs vacancy tax to tackle property speculation in Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has voiced strong support for implementing a vacancy tax on residential properties left unoccupied for long periods. CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader stated that such a measure is crucial to reducing property speculation and making housing more affordable for Malaysians. 'A vacancy tax typically applies to properties that remain vacant—unsold or unrented—for more than six months in a year. 'In countries such as Canada and Australia, particularly in cities like Melbourne, this tax is set at between one and three per cent of the property or land value,' he said. Mohideen explained that the tax aims to discourage speculative investments, especially in the medium-cost housing segment, where rising prices in the subsale market have made homeownership unattainable for middle-income earners. He highlighted that many urban properties remain empty while thousands struggle to find affordable homes. 'A vacancy tax would act as a strong disincentive to leave properties idle and would encourage owners to either rent out or sell them, returning more units to the active housing market,' he added. CAP also urged the government to reassess the Real Property Gains Tax and stamp duty, proposing higher rates for short-term property sales and additional home purchases. Mohideen called for tighter restrictions on foreign buyers and stricter housing loan policies for individuals owning multiple properties, including lower loan-to-value ratios to deter speculative borrowing. 'Unless the government introduces comprehensive policy reforms, Malaysia's housing sector will continue to favour investors at the expense of ordinary citizens. It is the government's duty to uphold the principle that housing is a fundamental right, not a speculative commodity,' he stressed. - Bernama

Anwar condemns Israeli airstrikes on Damascus as violation of international law

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned Israel's recent airstrikes on Damascus, which violated Syria's sovereignty and resulted in the loss of innocent lives. 'These strikes constitute a clear violation of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria,' he said in a Facebook post today. He said Syria has endured immense hardship over the past decade and its people deserve peace, not further violence or external interference. 'Malaysia stands in solidarity with the Syrian people and calls for an immediate end to such violations and a renewed commitment to humanitarian principles and the rule of law,' he said. Israel launched airstrikes Wednesday on Damascus, targeting Syria's Defence Ministry and areas near the presidential palace. The strikes came as Israel resumed attacks in southern Syria's Suwayda province, claiming the operations were aimed at protecting the Druze minority and warning it will continue unless Syrian forces withdraw. The Syrian army had deployed troops to the area to restore order after clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups killed at least 30 people. — Bernama

Kelantan To Tighten Syariah Law Against LGBT, Immoral Acts

GENERAL KOTA BHARU, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan government remains committed to strengthening and amending the Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019 (EKJS) to enhance its effectiveness in curbing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) practices and immoral activities. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said that despite past legal challenges, the state government is determined to enhance the law and its enforcement. 'EKJS 2019 was introduced to address syariah offences including sodomy, musahaqah (same-sex relations between women) and other immoral acts that defile the sanctity of religious life. 'The state does not recognise deviant cultures that go against Islamic teachings. LGBT practices are a clear transgression of human nature, which undermines morals and social harmony,' he said in a statement published on his official Facebook page today. To boost prevention and enforcement, the state has formed a special committee involving the Royal Malaysia Police, the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department, the Kelantan Health Department, the Kelantan Islamic Foundation, the Social Welfare Department and the National Anti-Drugs Agency. The committee is responsible for coordinating comprehensive and inter-agency efforts to address moral decay and deviant behaviours that are increasingly visible in society, he added. Mohamed Fadzli said the state government has implemented the Rabbani Community Culture Programme to enhance Islamic understanding, engage with at-risk communities and build societal resilience against the spread of social ills. He also called on the federal government, particularly the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, to restrict access to online platforms that promote immoral content. 'The digital space must not be left unregulated and allowed to corrupt the minds and morals of society, especially the younger generation,' he said.
