Israel says it will cut off electricity and water to Unrwa's offices

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa) continues to be targeted by Israel. In the latest attack on the agency, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced the government was planning to cut off electricity and water to the aid group's offices in a post on X on Tuesday. In October 2024, Israel banned Unrwa from operating in Israel. It followed this up by forcing six Unrwa-run schools to close in East Jerusalem.

UNRWA calls for urgent fuel delivery to Gaza to prevent shutdown of basic services

GAZA — The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) urgently called for immediate fuel deliveries to the Gaza Strip on Saturday, warning that a shutdown of essential services is imminent amid Israel's ongoing military campaign. Without prompt shipments of fuel, UNRWA cautioned, Gaza faces a complete collapse of critical lifeline services such as hospital generators, ambulances, bakeries, and water pumping stations, which would exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation and amount to collective punishment of Gaza's 2.4 million residents. Gaza's Health Ministry echoed the warning, stating that power generators are nearing shutdown due to severe fuel shortages, threatening the operation of the remaining hospitals and healthcare facilities. The ministry renewed its urgent appeal for international pressure on Israel to allow the necessary fuel to sustain lifesaving medical equipment. The crisis deepened earlier this week when Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical center, announced the suspension of dialysis services due to lack of fuel. Since March 2, Israel has maintained a strict blockade, closing crossings to food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid, worsening famine-like conditions and increasing suffering across the enclave. Despite global calls for a ceasefire, Israeli military operations have continued unabated, resulting in the deaths of over 57,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children, since October 2023. In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave. — Agencies

Civilians In Gaza Face Heavy Attacks While Seeking Food At Aid Centres: UN Agency

ISTANBUL, June 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported Saturday that civilians suffering from hunger in the Gaza Strip have come under heavy Israeli attacks while seeking food at aid distribution centres, reported Anadolu Ajansi (AA). UNRWA cited in a statement the testimony of a Palestinian survivor of an attack on a distribution centre in Rafah, which had been established by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) under the guise of humanitarian aid. The statement noted that starving Palestinians, in their desperate search for food, are being exposed to intense Israeli assaults at the so-called distribution centers, putting their lives at severe risk.

It said many return home empty-handed after surviving attacks. The statement underlined the urgent need to resume secure aid distribution to Gazans and stressed that it must be carried out through UN agencies, including UNRWA. Since May 27, the Israeli army has been launching attacks on distribution zones established under the guise of humanitarian aid by the Israeli-US-backed GHF. Israeli forces have been opening fire on civilians flocking to the distribution sites in "buffer zones" created by Israel. According to data from the Media Office in Gaza, between May 27 and June 6, Israeli forces carried out attacks on Palestinians at the distribution centers, killing 110 victims and injuring 583. The bodies of nine Palestinians remain missing. – Bernama-Anadolu
