Trump's comments were somewhat mixed. While he denied immediate plans to dismiss Powell, he added he was not ruling out the possibility entirely
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he has no plans to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, despite previously hinting at the possibility during a private meeting with congressional Republicans that was later leaked to the press.
Asked by reporters if he intended to fire Powell, Trump replied, 'No, we're not planning on doing anything."
However, Trump's comments were somewhat mixed. While he denied immediate plans to dismiss Powell, he added he was not ruling out the possibility entirely.
'I don't rule out anything, but I think it's highly unlikely," Trump said. He also noted that he could make a change when Powell's term ends next year.
After months of increasing criticism of the independent central bank chief, Trump's mixed signals caused 30-year US Treasury bond yields to rise above five percent.
The US president has criticised Powell heavily in recent months, accusing him of not lowering interest rates fast enough. Trump has called Powell a 'numbskull" and a 'moron" during public remarks.
CNBC that the president indicated he would likely act soon.
Powell's current term as Fed Chair runs till May 2026, and he has said he does not intend to step down early. He has also stressed the importance of the Federal Reserve's independence in setting monetary policy.
Markets reacted negatively to the reports about Trump's potential plans. The US dollar dropped by 1% against the euro, while gold — seen as a safe-haven asset — gained value.
Wall Street also declined, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.2%, the S&P 500 losing 0.3%, and the Nasdaq Composite down 0.4%. Meanwhile, the yield on the 30-year US Treasury bond jumped on investor concerns.

Meghalaya: Aspiring entrepreneurs trained in Jaintia Hills pottery craft

Shillong, Jul 18 (PTI) Thirty aspiring entrepreneurs from Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills were trained in traditional Larnai pottery as part of a seven-day skill development programme aimed at preserving indigenous knowledge and promoting rural livelihoods, officials said. Organised by the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Centre (DDUCC), Wahiajer, a constituent college of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the programme titled 'Application of Indigenous Knowledge in Pottery Making' was held from July 12 to 18 at the DDUCC community hall. Renowned artisan Roilin Pyrtuh from Larnai village, known for its centuries-old pottery tradition, led the training. Larnai, located in West Jaintia Hills, is famous for its distinctive black pottery, crafted entirely by hand without the use of a potter's wheel. The process includes traditional clay preparation, shaping, open-firing, and finishing techniques that have been passed down through generations. Pyrtuh learned the craft from her mother, continuing a multi-generational family legacy. Her family stands among the few still exclusively practising traditional techniques without mechanisation, crafting one-of-a-kind pottery entirely by hand. The sessions focused on equipping them with livelihood skills while promoting cultural preservation and sustainable entrepreneurship. The valedictory function held on July 18 was graced by NEHU pro vice-chancellor Prof. S. Umdor as chief guest, and Lukas Jat, member of Wahiajer village, as guest of honour. Also in attendance were Dr. FR Sumer, principal in-charge, DDUCC; Latu Nartiang, branch manager of Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank, Ummulong; faculty, students, and community members. Umdor commended the DDUCC team for promoting indigenous trades and encouraged participants to tap into opportunities in local markets and tourism. He noted that the initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which integrates vocational education with academic learning. Certificates of participation were awarded to all trainees. PTI JOP MNB view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 17:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. His comments follow the release of a Justice Department memo confirming no evidence of a client list or blackmail attempt by Jeffrey Epstein. The memo also reaffirmed that Epstein died by suicide in 2019. Attorney General Pam Bondi, previously linked to remarks about a "list," later clarified she meant general documents. Despite growing public and political calls for transparency, the underlying case materials remain undisclosed by the Department of Justice. Watch to know more. See More
