Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot given extra Man Utd leave after Diogo Jota death
Manchester United have granted stars Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot additional time off following the tragic death of Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota. Fernandes and Dalot both attended the Liverpool forward's funeral in their homeland on Saturday after Jota, 28, died alongside his brother in a horrific car crash last week.
All three players were part of the Portugal squad who won the Nations League in July, beating Spain on penalties in the final. The United duo were scheduled to return to Manchester this week as the Red Devils begin pre-season training.
But Fernandes and Dalot will be allowed to return later than the rest of United's first-team quad. The Sun report that the pair have both been granted a week's compassionate leave.
A source adds that both players are 'heartbroken' and explains that United's squad have 'rallied around them'. Red Devils captain Fernandes and right-back Dalot each shared tributes on social media following Jota's death.
"Friend, colleague and companion in a thousand battles," Fernandes posted. "It is difficult to understand how it is possible for someone to leave so soon.
"May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly. My condolences to your entire family."
Dalot wrote: "Devastating... speechless... much strength to the family."
A number of other United players past and present shared tributes. Portugal captain and former Red Devils striker Cristiano Ronaldo also posted: "It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.
"To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."
Harry Maguire said: "So sad. RIP. Heartbreaking." Mason Mount commented: "Absolutely devastating news. Rest in peace Diogo and Andre. Deepest condolences and thoughts are with the family."
Amad also said: "My sincere condolences to Jota's Family and his Wife. We are all devastated by this news. May their souls rest in peace." Joshua Zirkzee added: "Unbelievable news... rest in perfect paradise, prayers to your loved ones."
United begin their pre-season campaign against Leeds in Sweden on Saturday, July 19. Ruben Amorim's team then play West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton on tour in the United States. Their fifth and final match is at home to Fiorentina on Saturday, August 9.

Manchester United are opening their doors to fans for away game screenings at Old Trafford this season. The new scheme, which will cost fans £25 per match, will see supporters unable to land away match tickets the chance to watch United from the international suite at Old Trafford. In what has been described by insiders as a pub-like atmosphere, the suite will be decked out with big screens showing the games, as well as a bar and hot food. The £25 admission includes one free drink as well as a portion of food in what sources feel represents a value-for-money experience. Season ticket holders now have the chance to buy tickets to stadium screenings of the first three away games of the season, at Fulham, at Manchester City, and at Brentford. United have one of the most in-demand away tickets and demand to go continues to be at an all-time high despite the disappointment of results on the pitch. Insiders hope the screenings can help ease the demand and prove popular, particularly given that more fan protests are planned against the club's ownership for the forthcoming season, as Mail Sport first revealed. There has been friction with supporters just recently after it emerged that bosses were considering bringing in a controversial personal seat licence system (PSL) should they move to a new stadium, which would see fans charged up to £4,000 simply for the right to buy a season ticket. That prospect triggered anger among large sections of the fanbase, who have already launched a series of protests against the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group. Southampton clinch Premier prize at SuperCup NI as one goal enough to topple Manchester United
That's how the 2025 SuperCup NI ended as the Saints marked a first, not just by winning the Premier tournament but tasting success in the competition for the first-ever time. The kids from the south of England celebrated on Northern Ireland's north coast after a performance that mixed coolness and composure with pace and quality in attack – although all they could muster was a single goal. Jude Daniels did the trick eight minutes into the second-half to win the Final and that was enough to give them the trophy. The Saints' front three of Kynan Duffy, Daniels and Marley Parry created constant problems for the United defence without being able to find the space to get too many shots in on Darlington Osuchukwu's goal. It was that type of game with few chances, and one goal was always likely to win it. When it came, Daniels' strike was worthy of winning any Final. The build-up, the final pass and the finish were all of an extremely high standard for players in their mid-teens. The move really got going with a beautiful exchange of passes between Archie Lovatt and Max Little, who was hugely impressive in midfield. Little laid the ball off to Parry on the left of the box and, with one touch, he found Daniels on the six-yard line, and he also only needed one touch to divert the ball into the net. United had their chances, the best of them in the first-half. The impressive Edson DeJonge-Seiros broke through on the left after a great pass by Emmanuel Ziro, and after beating George Wells, his shot went across the face of goal inches ahead of the line. The Southampton defence parted as Samuel O'Brien ran through and George Moloney had to make a good save, and then early in the second-half, Jacey Carrick's shot from distance was pushed to the side and Ziro could only send the rebound wide of the far post. Those who came to see if Kai Rooney could outdo his famous father Wayne and win the competition he graced 25 years previously weren't treated to a goal, but there were moments in which he showed why it's not just his name that makes him so highly rated. He brought a huge cheer from the crowd early on with a twist, turn and shot that many thought had found its way in, but the ball had instead ruffled the netting after coming off the advertising boards. Rooney then hit the side netting just after Southampton scored, screwed a shot high and wide and then, with his best move of the match late in the game, tricked past the Saints defence and pulled the ball back diagonally across the box – but agonisingly, nobody could latch onto it. United did have two more big chances to force a penalty shoot-out. Southampton goalkeeper Moloney produced a superb save to deny Ziro from point-blank range and then, from a corner deep in injury-time, Gazimagamed Ibragimov headed just over the bar. The sound of 'When the Saints go marching in' filled the air above the Coleraine Showgrounds as the Southampton youngsters lifted the trophy, and when they went marching in towards the changing room, they did so as winners. County Down took third place after a 1-0 win over Hamilton Academical, while Ichifuna defeated Intercontinental 6-1 to take the Globe competition. County Londonderry were 2-0 winners against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Vase, and County Armagh won the Bowl Final, beating County Antrim 3-2.
