Auburn flips 4-star QB Peyton Falzone from Penn State

Reuters26-06-2025
June 26 - Auburn, a late entry into the recruitment of four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone, got the recruit to flip from Penn State to the Tigers on Thursday.
Falzone announced on social media and told recruiting websites that he is committing to Auburn, after decommitting from Virginia Tech in November 2024 and then, in April, choosing Penn State in his home state.
The Nazareth (Pa.) Academy High School rising senior had posted on June 2 on social media that he received an offer from Auburn. He has not made an official or unofficial visit to the campus.
"Auburn is a place full of tradition," Falzone said in an interview with 247Sports. "My family and I have spent a lot of time discussing the school and its blend of elite football and high-level academics. It has it all. I'm blessed to be able to play at a school with a strong tradition of faith and family running throughout the university and the community. All of that is very important to us. I can't wait to be there. War Eagle."
Falzone is ranked the No. 246 prospect in the nation, No. 18 quarterback and No. 6 player in Pennsylvania for the Class of 2026, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Falzone threw for 2,135 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions, and rushed 78 times for 697 yards and eight TDs in 2024. As a sophomore in the 2023 season, Falzone passed for 2,528 yards with 19 TDs and four interceptions and rushed for 440 yards and 11 TDs.
He also has offers from Iowa, Utah, Syracuse, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin as well as Penn State, Virginia Tech and others.

Strong pitching, three HRs carry Phillies past Reds

July 5 - Edmundo Sosa, Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber homered as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the visiting Cincinnati Reds 5-1 on Saturday and evened the three-game series. The Phillies' three-homer attack complemented a solid effort by Ranger Suarez, who allowed one run and five hits over five innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out six before four Philadelphia relievers combined to hold Cincinnati scoreless the rest of the way. Reds starter Nick Lodolo (5-6) gave up three runs and four hits over six innings, walking two and striking out eight. Will Benson's homer accounted for the only run for Cincinnati. Both starting pitchers put up zeros through the first four innings. The closest either team came to a run during that stretch was a bases-loaded rally by Cincinnati in the fourth, but Suarez retired Jose Trevino on a groundout to escape that jam. The Reds finally broke through in the fifth when Benson sent a first-pitch fastball over the wall in right-center field. Suarez allowed two more singles in that inning, but he retired Austin Hays on a called third strike to keep it at 1-0. Philadelphia promptly tied it when Sosa homered against Lodolo in the bottom of the fifth. The hosts then tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Schwarber walked and Bohm delivered a two-run homer to center. Meanwhile, the Phillies' bullpen kept the Reds in check. Jordan Romano (1-3) worked around a leadoff double in a scoreless sixth and Tanner Banks logged a 1-2-3 seventh. Orion Kerkering allowed two baserunners -- including an error by shortstop Trea Turner -- in the eighth, but he escaped without allowing a run. Matt Strahm took care of things in the ninth to close out the Phillies' fourth win in six games. Strahm's job became a bit easier when Schwarber lifted a two-run homer to left -- his 27th of the season -- against Brent Suter in the eighth. --Field Level Media

Palmeiras vs Chelsea predictions: Club World Cup tips and odds

Our expert has two tips for the Club World Cup quarter-final contest between Palmeiras and Chelsea at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (kick-off, Saturday 2am BST). We think the Blues have the depth to get over the line. Back Blues to get over the line Following Manchester City's exit at the hands of Al-Hilal, the Club World Cup draw has opened up nicely for Chelsea, who are a value pick at 21/20 to beat Palmeiras and secure a spot in the last four. Enzo Maresca has experimented at times in this tournament – most notably in the 3-1 defeat by Flamengo in the group stage – but he is likely to revert to his strongest team and system for this game given the potential financial reward on the line. And while the absence of Moises Caicedo, who is suspended, is a huge blow, Nicolas Jackson returns from his ban and new signing Joao Pedro could be involved, while Palmeiras' defence is hindered by the suspension of captain Gustavo Gomez. Both teams went to extra time in the round of 16 but Chelsea have the superior squad depth and should cope better. Palmeiras rely on defensive grit and organisation but have yet to come up against a top side, drawing with Porto and Inter Miami either side of a 2-0 win against Al Ahly in the group stage, then seeing off Botafogo. Chelsea have the attacking quality to break them down and can win this in 90 minutes. Palmeiras' width can raise corner count At this year's Club World Cup, Palmeiras have directed 40 per cent of their attacks down the left side with just 28 per cent going through the middle. It is fair to say they have played with plenty of width and despite their defensive commitment, they like to strike at goal, averaging 17.3 shots per game in this tournament. Both factors could point to a high corner count with over 9.5 corners in the match appealing at 17/20. Palmeiras averaged 5.6 corners per game in the group stage before racking up 15 in their match with Botafogo (albeit after extra time), while Chelsea's group-stage average was 5.3 before they recorded 10 against Benfica after 120 minutes. Livvy Dunne's boyfriend Paul Skenes reveals shock career plan once he's quit baseball

Pirates star Paul Skenes has revealed a surprising career plan for when his playing days are over. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year, who is dating former LSU gymnastics star Livvy Dunne, has quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in the league. But he hilariously shared with a reporter on Tuesday that he would 'love to cut grass professionally' in the future. Skenes was snapped by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Noah Hiles talking with the Pirates grounds crew, with the reporter saying Skenes had been 'chopping it up with the boys for a good 15-20 minutes.' The pitcher later told Hiles that he was out there because he was 'bored,' before sharing his desire to one day cut grass for a living. For now, Skenes is thriving on the diamond as he's putting together another strong season for the struggling Pirates. Paul Skenes looks to have joined the Pirates grounds crew. He's been out there, chopping it up with the boys for a good 15-20 minutes now. — Noah Hiles (@_NoahHiles) July 1, 2025 Skenes is one of the best pitchers in the sport and will make millions in MLB before retiring Despite the team's 38-50 record, Skenes is pitching a 2.03 ERA with 115 strikeouts thus far this season. In fact, his ERA over his 41 career games is an even-better 1.99 Skenes is making $875,000 this year, though that number is expected to balloon once he negotiates his first long-term contract. Previously, ESPN's MLB insider Jeff Passan claimed there was a 'real argument' for the Pirates to trade Skenes at the deadline this year. 'The truth is, there will be teams that ask about Paul Skenes at the deadline this year, and I don't anticipate that he's going to be moved,' Passan began on the Pat McAfee Show. 'But there's a real argument to be made that the best thing for the Pittsburgh Pirates would be to move Paul Skenes while he has the most value.' Passan went on to claim that the famously stingy Pirates - who have the third-lowest payroll in the league this season - were not currently 'worthy' of getting Skenes to sign an extension. 'It's not just Paul Skenes who deserves better,' Passan continued. 'It's Pittsburgh Pirates fans who deserve better, and they deserve a system that allows teams to keep great players. 'Now in some cases, guys will stay with small market teams, we've seen that... But what incentive does Paul Skenes have to extend with the Pirates when the Pirates haven't shown the willingness – from either [owner] Bob Nutting all the way down – or the ability, to bring in guys who are going to make this team better? The Pirates haven't shown that they are worthy of a Paul Skenes extension at this point.' However, Pirates GM Ben Cherington later said any such trade talk was 'not part of the conversation at all.' The Pirates will face the Mariners on Friday after winning their last six games.
