FIFA pays tribute to Shaheen Shah Afridi among footballing greats

Express Tribune28-05-2025
FIFA has paid tribute to Pakistani pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, featuring him alongside football greats Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and Luka Modrić in a social media post celebrating global athletes associated with the iconic number 10 jersey.
The FIFA World Cup Instagram account posted an image on Tuesday highlighting Afridi with three of football's biggest stars—Messi, Neymar and Modrić—under the caption, 'The iconic.'
While Afridi is known for his performances on the cricket field, his inclusion in the tribute signifies a crossover of global sporting recognition.
There is speculation online from fans that the gesture was part of a wider effort to increase fan engagement in Pakistan ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, set to take place in the US.
Localised campaigns are reportedly in development to connect with sports fans across different regions.
The recognition comes during a high point in Afridi's cricketing career.
The 25-year-old fast bowler led Lahore Qalandars to a third HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) title, making him the most successful captain in the league's history.
Afridi's Qalandars chased down 202 to defeat Quetta Gladiators in the final at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium. Sikandar Raza secured the win with a six and a four in the final over, finishing the match with one ball to spare.
Already the only captain to claim consecutive HBL PSL titles in 2022 and 2023, Afridi now holds the distinction of lifting the trophy three times—more than any other captain in the competition.
Captains with most HBL PSL titles:
Shaheen Afridi (Lahore Qalandars) – 3
Misbah-ul-Haq (Islamabad United) – 1
Darren Sammy (Peshawar Zalmi) – 1
JP Duminy (Islamabad United) – 1
Sarfaraz Ahmed (Quetta Gladiators) – 1
Imad Wasim (Karachi Kings) – 1
Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans) – 1
Shadab Khan (Islamabad United) – 1
FIFA's post places Afridi in elite company, furthering his rise as a globally recognised athlete across sporting codes.

Record-breaking Root bats on, Eng 433-4

England's Joe Root celebrates his century on day three of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford. Photo: REUTERS Joe Root climbed to second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers after hitting a sparkling 38th century on Friday as England hunted a series-clinching win against India. Ben Stokes' men, 2-1 up in the five-match series, were 433-4 at tea on the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, 75 runs ahead of the toiling tourists. The imperious Root, who had just overtaken retired Australia great Ricky Ponting in the run-scoring charts, was 121 not out, with Stokes unbeaten on 36. Earlier, Ollie Pope (71) put on 144 for the third wicket with Root before he was dismissed by Washington Sundar, who also removed Harry Brook cheaply to give India renewed hope. But skipper Stokes ensured England regained the initiative, celebrating at the non-striker's end as Root reached 13,379 runs with a single behind point, moving one ahead of Ponting's figure. "Congratulations, Joe Root. Magnificent, second on the table," Ponting said on Sky Sports. England earlier resumed on 225-2 following a blistering opening partnership of 166 in 32 overs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on day two, with Pope 20 not out and Root on 11. India's pacemen had too often been wayward on Thursday and Jasprit Bumrah saw his first ball Friday drift down the legside to be clipped away for four by Root in elegant fashion. Root then uppercut Mohammed Siraj over the slips for another boundary. On 21, the former England skipper walked a long away across his stumps only to miss an intended glance off Siraj. India reviewed for lbw after Ahsan Raza ruled in Root's favour but replays upheld the Pakistani umpire's decision, indicating the ball would have missed leg stump. There was another scare when Root, on 22, was nearly run out but Ravindra Jadeja's shy at the stump missed. Root then leapfrogged India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis into third place in Test cricket's list of run-scorers. Pope, who drove Siraj for a superb four between cover and mid-off, completed a 93-ball fifty before Root followed him to that landmark in 99 balls. Spin, however, eventually paid dividends for India where pace had failed. Pope had added just one run to his lunchtime score of 70 when, beaten by the drift from off-spinner Sundar, he edged a flicked front-foot drive to KL Rahul at slip. England were soon 349-4 when Brook, on three, was stumped by Dhruv Jurel, deputising for injured India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Root reached his century in 178 balls with a leg glance for four off debutant paceman Anshul Kamboj. His 38th Test century drew him level with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara in fourth place on the list of most hundreds in a Test career. Most Test runs Player Runs Sachin Tendulkar (India) 15,921 Joe Root (England) 13,380* Ricky Ponting (Australia) 13,378 Jacques Kallis (South Africa) 13,289 Rahul Dravid (India) 13,288.

Daughters-in-law should go out to work, says Asma Abbas

Asma Abbas recently appeared on Good Morning Pakistan, where she and her youngest daughter-in-law, Sameen Ahmed, were featured in the special Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law segment. Sameen and Asma's youngest son, Ahmed got married in January of this year. Asma's message for her daughters-in-law, particularly Sameen, was both relevant and empowering. She shared her thoughts on the role of women in her family, emphasising that she values their education and believes they should use it to its fullest potential. "I encourage my daughters-in-law to work because they've earned their degrees, and those shouldn't go to waste?" she stated. In a society where many women are often expected to pause their careers after marriage, Asma's supportive stance on women pursuing professional goals was refreshing and much needed. During the discussion, Asma was asked about her two other daughters-in-law, to which she revealed, "Yes, they work as well." She stressed the importance of maintaining a home while also acknowledging that there's no need for women to be confined to house duties. "What will they do sitting at home?" she added. "We have house help." Sameen, who praised her in-laws for being kind and supportive, fondly recalled her first day in the family, when she had stayed up late, only to wake up to a welcoming and humorous response instead of a scolding. "I was expecting to be scolded for waking up late, but instead, they were really warm," Sameen shared. In a lighthearted moment, Asma added that she enjoys when women dress up in the morning for their work. "I like it when women dress up in the morning and go out for their work," she said with a smile. When asked about Sameen's habit of sleeping in, Asma responded with a playful tone, "I don't mind her waking up late. It reminds me of [my daughter] Zara, she also loves her sleep!" Asma's candid statements received widespread praise from viewers. One user commended her by saying, "This type of mindset is rare in Pakistani society!" and another one added, "Society needs mothers-in-law like you, you're a gem." However, there were some viewers who felt that Asma should not be concerned with whether her daughter-in-law chooses to work. "Oh God, Pakistani women are never going to change. If a woman wants to sit at home, even that is a problem now," penned one commenter. "Why does a mother-in-law get to say anything at all about whether one works or roams in a night dress? She's missed the whole point while trying to act like she's nailed it."
