Tropical storm Dexter forms in the Atlantic, National Hurricane Center gives major update on landfall in US

developed into a tropical storm overnight and is expected to move away from the United States.
NHC forecasts indicated the storm would track away from the U.S. coast and was not an immediate threat to land. A low pressure system, dubbed as AL95, developed into Tropical Storm Dexter over the western Atlantic late on Aug. 3, the hurricane center said. Dexter is releasing maximum sustained winds near 45 mph and the tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from its center, according to USA Today.

Will tropical storm Dexter make landfall in US?
The tropical storm is forecast to move away from the U.S. coast and stay north of Bermuda. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect and no hazards to land are expected.
As of 5 a.m. ET on Aug. 4, the storm was located a few hundred miles northwest of Bermuda and appeared to be moving away from the U.S., according to the hurricane center. The storm is moving about 12 mph and is expected to pick up speed before it starts slowing down on Aug. 5 and 6.

"Some slight strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days," the hurricane center said. "Dexter is likely to become post-tropical by Wednesday."

Dexter is the fourth named storm of 2025 in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Dexter is not a threat to the U.S. The hurricane center is forecasting the storm to track eastward and deeper into the Atlantic, where it is expected to lose its tropical features by Wednesday.
As of 4 a.m. CDT Monday, Tropical Storm Dexter was located about 255 miles northwest of Bermuda and was tracking to the east-northeast at 12 mph.
Dexter had sustained winds of 45 mph, making it a minimal tropical storm. The hurricane center said Dexter could get a bit stronger before losing its tropical features and becoming a post-tropical system on Wednesday. Dexter is no threat to any land areas.

A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph – an upgrade from a tropical depression. The NHC said a faster east-northeast or northeast motion is expected to continue through early Tuesday before it begins to slow down on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tropical Storm Dexter's formation comes during what meteorologists predicted to be an above-average hurricane season, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast predicting 13 to 19 named storms in 2025. Last year's hurricane season saw 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and significant devastation—including more than $113 billion in damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

‘Corpses' in queue at Kashi ghats as swollen Ganga overflows onto streets
1 2 Varanasi: Families wait for hours for their turn for the last rites of their near and dear ones at the Ghats in Kashi, as rising waters of the swollen Ganga overflowed on to the streets of Varanasi on Monday, leaving the Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats cremation grounds inundated. While pyres are being set at the upper platform at Manikarnika, cremation is taking place in streets near Harishchandra ghat. After submerging all ghats, Ganga waters have started flowing on roads, especially in upstream areas, while downstream, it flooded tributary Varuna and marooned dozens of localities on its banks. The Ganga in spate has not only affected lives of thousands in Varanasi, but it is also causing panic in Ballia and has marooned fields with paddy crops in Ghazipur and Chandauli districts. After crossing the 72-metre mark, above the danger level of 71.26 metres, the river water has entered the city areas. However, the pace of rise has reduced to less than one centimetre per hour in Varanasi. The district administration engaged 80 boats in relief and rescue operations while community kitchens are being operated to provide meals to flood-hit families. The highest flood level (HFL) in Varanasi was recorded at 73.9 metres in 1978. Recently, the Ganga water level touched 72.56 metres in 2016 and 72.63 metres in 2013. In Ballia, the river level was recorded above 59.65-metre mark against the HFL of 60.39 metres. Against the HFL of 80.34 metres, the river was at 78.37-metre mark in Mirzapur. The officials in Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Ghazipur, and Ballia are monitoring the flood-affected areas while continuing the relief and rescue operations. Meanwhile, the district administration have announced closure of schools for students till Class 12 on Aug 5 and 6.

Flooded roads leave city stranded
1 2 3 4 5 6 Kanpur: Heavy rainfall during the last 15 hours, though making the climatic conditions favourable, turned the entire city into several mini pools. Water logging at several places resulted in movement of normal traffic being badly hit on Monday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department and CSA observatory, the city received around 43.8 mm of rain till 8am on Monday. However, rains stopped around 1pm. Thereafter, people came out on roads and found themselves stuck at several places and most of them returned back to their homes. Several of them faced awkward situations when their vehicles' got stuck in waterlogged road. There was a jam-like situation at Govind Nagar, Shastri Nagar, P Road, Pony Road, Fazal Ganj, Rawatpur Sarsaul, Bidhanu Naubastaa Bara Chauraha, Baqar Mandi, etc. At Govind Nagar, water entered into the shops. Juhi railway under bridge, was filled with rainy, sewer water and sludge. As a result, the short and important route to connect South Kanpur was cut off. Citizens coming from the city and going to the city were forced to take long alternate routes. Roads were submerged till two to three feet of water at several places including the famous Anandeshwar temple. One injured was admitted to the hospital. One woman died at Jajmau mound. One Mohd Shafeeq and his wife Anees Fatima were living with their two sons in a mud wall house. Due to rains, the wall and platform of their house cracked as they were repairing their house, the mound sank. The debris of the mound fell on their house and both Shafeeq and Anees were caved in the debris. The neighbours tried to rescue them and took them to Kanshi Ram hospital, where doctors declared Anees dead and the condition of Shaqueel is stated to be critical. The second incident took place at Ghatampur where the wall of a dilapidated house collapsed leaving one minor seriously injured. CHC Ghatampur declared him dead when he was brought there by his parents. One Ranno Devi died at village Kaintha in Ghatampur when the roof of her house collapsed.
