Thompson in six-way tie for LPGA lead in Michigan
On a day when multiple players threatened but failed to break free atop the crowded leaderboard at Blythefield Country Club, Thompson was tied on 11-under 205 with Spain's Carlota Ciganda, South Korean Choi Hye-jin, Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Sweden's Madelene Sagstrom and Sofia Garcia of Paraguay.
The leaders were two strokes clear of Australian Karis Davidson, who fired a one-under 71 for 207, with another four players tied on 208.
For Thompson, it's another crack at a title she missed out on in a playoff last year, and a chance to add to her tally of 11 LPGA titles for the first time since 2019.
"Feel good about it," said Thompson, who is making just her sixth start of the season as she plays a limited schedule. "Hopefully I won't need my short game as much tomorrow. That's the goal. I didn't hit it my best today, but I tried to stay in the moment, stay positive and make the saves when I needed them."
Thompson started the day one adrift and after a bogey at the third reeled off three straight birdies at four, five and six. She responded to a bogey at the ninth with birdies at 10 and 11 and after a bogey at 14, birdied 16 and 18.
Choi, who was one of four players sharing the overnight lead, had three birdies without a bogey in her three-under 69 and had a chance to take the solo lead but missed a six-foot birdie putt at 18.
Ciganda, also among the first-round leaders, made her fourth birdie of the day at 18 to cap her 69 and keep her name in the leading bunch.
Sagstrom, winner of the LPGA Match Play earlier this season, thrust herself into contention when she picked up five shots in the space of three holes with eagles at the fourth and sixth sandwiched around a birdie at the fifth.
She had three birdies and three bogeys the rest of the way in a five-under 67.
Garcia had the solo lead at 13 under after an eagle and four birdies in her first 10 holes. But she fell back with three straight bogeys at 13, 14 and 15 before salvaging a share of the lead with a birdie at the last.
Koerstz Madsen, who won her lone LPGA title in Thailand in 2022, was 13-under with a two-shot lead after six birdies through 16 holes. But she closed with back-to-back bogeys and said nerves were a contributing factor.
"I know some of the swing got really fast at the end, so it's good that I can go and work on that and know what Swing thought I have to think about when that happens for tomorrow," she said.

The 24-year-old Australian was frustrated at being unable to complete a second flying lap in Q3 but determined to improve and challenge at the front. "For me, it's the fact that I didn't get to start (the lap), that was the problem. I had Gasly's spin at the last corner, so I didn't even open my second lap," he said. "Lando has been very quick all weekend, and it would've been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row. "It's always a shame when you don't even get the chance, but we can still have a good race from there. Sometimes it's just not your day." However, the Melbourne-native still has his eye on claiming his sixth Grand Prix win of the season on Sunday. "Our pace this weekend has looked very strong. The Ferrari pace looked good as well, which was a bit of a surprise," he said.

Pollock shines as Lions win big in Australia tour opener
In their first match in Australia since 2013, the Lions ran in eight tries on a cool night in front of 46,656 fans at Optus Stadium, most of whom were loudly supporting the tourists. But the victory was soured after Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams suffered a hamstring injury just after the interval following his second try. After a shock 28-24 defeat to Argentina in a warm-up in Dublin, the Lions looked far slicker with a revamped line-up led by 20-year-old Englishman Pollock. Having made his debut against the Pumas, Pollock spectacularly set up Williams in the 15th minute with a burst of speed. But there were teething problems for Andy Farrell's team as they opened their nine-game Australian itinerary, highlighted by a three-match series against the Wallabies starting on July 19. The Lions were undisciplined and conceded six penalties in a frenetic first half against a Force team with six internationals in their starting XV. However, the gulf in talent between the teams was evident as the Lions ran riot in a one-sided second half with five tries. The Lions easily beat the Force 69-17 on their last Australian tour and something similar was expected against a team that finished ninth in the 11-team Super Rugby ladder, the lowest of the four Australian franchises. The Nic White-led Force were without key Wallabies Carlo Tizzano, Jeremy Williams and Harry Potter. Ireland's Maguire and American Kupcho seize LPGA pairs lead
The back-nine starters united for eight birdies and an eagle to shoot the low round of the day at Midland Golf Club in Michigan and stand on 13-under 127 after 36 holes. "We ham and egged it really well," Kupcho said. "She made a lot of really good putts today and yesterday also. We'll just keep it going." Scotland's Gemma Dryburgh and Australian rookie Cassie Porter, the 18-hole leaders, combined for a 62 to stand second, one shot back on 128. "We complement each other really well. We have different strengths and kind of play to those," Dryburgh said. "We got going on the front. We had a lot of good putts." Maguire birdied three of the last six holes, closing the round with six straight one-putt greens, and credited her partner with setting her up for a solid putting effort. "Her length off the tee has been an advantage this week," Maguire said. "I think we're real fierce competitors and you see that in the Solheim Cup and week to week so I guess we're putting down our swords this week and coming together. Has been fun so far." An alternate-shot (foursomes) format will be used on Saturday with best ball again for Sunday's last round. "Just continue to hit fairways and greens and give each other putts," Kupcho said of their plans. "Just put ourselves in the best position and see what we can do." It was a big day for Porter, who made five birdies in a row from the par-five third through the par-three seventh. After she and Dryburgh both had bogeys at the eighth, Porter birdied the next four holes to reach 12-under before they closed with six pars. "We both made plenty of putts," said Porter.
