SCERT revamps Class 1 timetable; Hindi dropped
The earlier decision to introduce Hindi from Class 1 had drawn sharp criticism from educationists, language experts, activists, and political leaders, who argued that imposing a third language at such an early stage was detrimental to learning outcomes, especially in a multilingual state like Maharashtra.
Amid rising protests, the government rolled back its earlier directive. The revised SCERT timetable removes the Hindi language slot and reallocates that time to co-curricular and physical development subjects, such as Art, Sports, Work Education, and Physical Education. The new structure is intended to support holistic child development and ease academic pressure on young learners.
According to the revised schedule, the school day is divided into nine 35-minute sessions from Monday to Saturday, with scheduled breaks and activity periods to maintain engagement and focus. Core academic subjects, particularly Mathematics and Languages, are concentrated in the earlier part of the day, aligning with students' optimal attention spans.
Significantly, the plan also emphasises health and activity-based education, featuring dedicated time for Health & Physical Education, Art Education, and Work Education. The Adolescence Education Programme (AEP), focusing on awareness and life skills, has been retained.
In total, the weekly instructional time now stands at 990 minutes, distributed over 30 sessions. Saturdays will be used more flexibly, with a reduced academic load and greater emphasis on co-curricular activities to encourage creativity and physical activity.

‘No Hindi vs Marathi in Maharashtra': Aaditya Thackeray plays down language row, accuses BJP of spreading ‘poison' in state
NEW DELHI: A day after celebrating government's rollback on "Hindi imposition," Shive Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday dismissed the controversy between Hindi vs Marathi in Maharashtra. Thackeray claimed that that the controversy is only on "biased media" and the issue was of "burden of three languages" on students. "I think this controversy is only on biased media or social media. Otherwise, there is no Hindi vs Marathi in Maharashtra. The controversy was just about the burden of three languages on students of Std 1 and why should the third language be Hindi?" Aaditya said. "Several languages are spoken in Maharashtra, but we won't tolerate insult to our mother tongue in our own state. We won't tolerate imposition of any language," he added. On Maharashtra minister drawing a parallel between the ongoing row and the Pahalgam attack, Aaditya said, "There is a lot of poison in BJP's mind when it comes to Maharashtra. Today, BJP has compared Maharashtra to the terrorists in Pahalgam incident - the terrorists whom the BJP could not catch or stop." "It has been three months since the Pahalgam incident, but where did those terrorists go? Nobody knows if they fled to Pakistan or joined the BJP. But comparing them to Maharashtra shows the malice and poison that BJP has for the state," he added. This comes a day after Uddahv Thackeray and Raj Thackeray held a "victory rally" in Mumbai after the government decided to retreat from ots decision to introduce three-language policy in Maharashtra schools, under New Education Policy. Devendra Fadnavis government had issued a Government Resolution (GR) on April 16, making Hindi a compulsory third language for students in Classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools. The government also announced the formation of a committee under educationist Narendra Jadhav to suggest the way forward and oversee the implementation of the language policy. The panel has been given three months to study the issue and prepare a report. Meanwhile, the three-language policy has now snowballed into a "Marathi identity" crisis in the state, leading to multiple incidents of assault on those who speak Hindi by the workers of different political parties.

36 lakh school kits, sans political branding, distributed to students in State
In the current academic year, the government has distributed 35.94 lakh school kits to students from Classes 1 to 10 in government and aided schools with a total expenditure of ₹953.71 crore. A statement released by the Department of School Education said of this total expenditure, ₹778.68 crore was contributed by the State and ₹175.03 crore by the Centre. Each kit is worth around ₹2,279. These school kits comprise three sets of uniform cloth (olive green pants/skirts and light yellow-green striped shirts), one pair of shoes, two pairs of socks, a belt and a school bag besides textbooks, workbooks and notebooks. Students of Class 6 also get Oxford English-English-Telugu dictionary, for Class 1 a pictorial dictionary and dictionaries in Urdu, Tamil and Odia wherever applicable. The statement said for the first time, the Andhra Pradesh government partnered with the Quality Council of India (QCI) to conduct a three-stage quality check (raw materials, production and packaging) for the kits which have been named, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mithra Kits. This marks a departure from political branding seen during the previous government, when the scheme was named 'Jagananna Vidya Kanuka'. 'The focus of the TDP-led NDA government in the State is on keeping politics away from education. We want schoolchildren to do their learning without labels,' said the statement. It may be noted here that the Jagananna Vidya Kanuka scheme launched by the previous YSRCP government, drew significant public attention. Branded heavily with the image and name of then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, the kits became a hallmark of the government's welfare-driven narrative. Promoted as a flagship education initiative, the scheme was celebrated in YSRCP circles as a symbol of inclusive development. However, critics argued that the Jagan government blurred the lines between governance and political promotion, sparking a debate over the use of public resources for personal branding. The NDA government is also said to have saved ₹63.80 crore, compared to previous year, by using an online e-procurement system for tenders, which ensured complete transparency and efficiency, said the statement. ..
