All hypotheses on Covid-19 origins 'remain on the table': WHO chief - International
All hypotheses on how the Covid-19 pandemic began remain on the table, the World Health Organization said Thursday following an inconclusive investigation into the global catastrophe's origins.
The pandemic killed an estimated 20 million people, according to WHO, while shredding economies and crippling health systems.
Understanding where the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid came from is seen as key to preventing future pandemics.
The first cases were detected in Wuhan in China in late 2019, with the WHO first characterising the outbreak as a pandemic in March 2020.
The WHO set up the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) to take the investigation into the pandemic's origins as far as they could.
Its report was being published on Friday.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said SAGO had advanced understanding of the origins of Covid-19 but much of the information needed to evaluate fully all the hypotheses had not been provided.
"Despite our repeated requests, China hasn't provided hundreds of viral sequences from individuals with Covid-19 early in the pandemic, more detailed information on animals sold at markets in Wuhan, and information on work done and biosafety conditions at laboratories in Wuhan," he told a press conference.
"WHO is also aware of intelligence reports performed by other governments around the world on the origins of Covid-19. We have also requested access to those reports.
"As things stand, all hypotheses must remain on the table, including zoonotic spillover and lab leak."
Tedros said the UN health agency continued to appeal to Beijing and other countries with information about the origins of Covid-19 to share the information openly, in the interests of protecting the world from future pandemics.

WHO delivers its first medical aid to Gaza since March 2 - War on Gaza
The World Health Organization said Thursday that it had delivered its first medical shipment into Gaza since March 2, adding though that the nine truckloads were "a drop in the ocean". Wednesday's shipment of supplies, plasma, and blood will be distributed among hospitals in the Palestinian territory in the coming days, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X. More than two months later, it began allowing some food in, but no other aid items until now. Tedros said nine trucks carrying essential medical supplies, 2,000 units of blood, and 1,500 units of plasma were delivered via the Karm Abu Salem crossing with Israel, "without any looting incident, despite the high-risk conditions along the route". "These supplies will be distributed to priority hospitals in the coming days," Tedros said. "The blood and plasma were delivered to Nasser Medical Complex's cold storage facility for onward distribution to hospitals facing critical shortages, amid a growing influx of injuries, many linked to incidents at food distribution sites." Last week, the WHO said only 17 of Gaza's 36 hospitals were minimally to partially functional, with the rest unable to function at all. Tedros said four WHO trucks were still atKarm Abu Salem and more were on their way towards Gaza. "However, these medical supplies are only a drop in the ocean. Aid at scale is essential to save lives," he said. "WHO calls for the immediate, unimpeded and sustained delivery of health aid into Gaza through all possible routes." Israel began allowing supplies to trickle in at the end of May following its more than two-month total blockade, but distribution has been marred by chaotic scenes and near-daily reports of Israeli forces firing on people waiting to collect rations. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a new US- and Israel-backed food distribution system, began handing out food in Gaza on May 26. It has 'really thick, hard shell,' Dahlgren explained, in order for the explosives to withstand the impact of the ground and penetrate to the depths it's intended to reach. 'There's the shell and there's the explosive in the fuse – the explosive needs to be robust enough to not detonate without being fused, the shell needs to be strong enough to go down that far and to hit that hard and to impart enough energy to even go down that far. And then the fuse needs to be hard enough to survive all that, and smart enough to know when to blow up,' Dahlgren said. 'It's a really complex program.' The exact size of the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant is unclear; CNN has reported that that its halls are estimated to be 80 to 90 meters underground. A UK-based think tank, the Royal United Services Institute, said the MOP may not even be able to reach Fordow, saying in a recent report that it would 'likely require multiple impacts at the same aiming point to have a good chance of penetrating the facility.' Fordow could be at the 'the edge' of the MOP's capabilities with only one munition, said Dahlgren. Testing for the bomb began in 2004 amid the heightened concern about weapons of mass destruction, Dahlgren said. One of the factors that led to its development, he added, were studies that showed bombing a facility's entrance 'wouldn't generate enough blast pressure to destroy the entire facility.' 'Part of the need for these penetrators is really because it's hard to just bomb the entrances and get away with it,' Dahlgren said. 'You can temporarily slow the progress of a program but not fully destroy things that way.' In 2009, Boeing won the contract to integrate the weapons system with US aircraft. The Air Force's B-2 Spirit – a multi-role heavy bomber – is the only aircraft able to employ the bomb operationally. The B-2, made by Northrop Grumman, is the 'backbone of stealth technology,' according to the company. The aircraft flies out of Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, and was first publicly displayed in November 1988. The US used B-2 bombers in 2024 to strike the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, targeting underground weapons storage facilities. The bomber – flown by a two-man pilot crew – can fly approximately 6,000 nautical miles without being refueled, according to the Air Force. Its 'stealth' capabilities allow it to 'penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most valued, and heavily defended, targets,' the Air Force said. It's unclear how many of the munitions the US has in its inventory; in 2009, Boeing delivered 20 of them to the Air Force, which was current as of 2015. Dahlgren estimated there are roughly 30 munitions in the US arsenal.
