WWE and UFC TKO merger tease 'big announcement' as Dana White and Co launch bid to revolutionise boxing

Daily Record21-04-2025
The WWE and UFC merger's parent company, TKO, are hoping to make their mark in the word of boxing very soon
TKO chief Nick Khan says that a 'big announcement' is coming soon as the WWE and UFC merger look to make their move into professional boxing.
The group was formed in 2023, with the UFC and WWE now falling under the TKO banner. And after their link up with Saudi Minister for Sport Turki Al-Sheikh - who has been responsible for funding and staging some of the biggest fights in boxing in the past two and a half years - TKO are now looking to launch their own boxing league that will see some of the best names in the sport face off against each other.

In an appearance on the Bill Simmons podcast, TKO director Khan insists plans are at an advanced stage ahead of their first boxing cards and that an announcement is due in the coming weeks.
He said: "Nothing to be acquired. We're going to grow it organically. If we're in mid-April now, I'd look for a big announcement on that in the next 4-6 weeks as to what our first card's going to be and who is going to be on that card.
"We want it to be UFC and WWE-like. But you'll see an announcement with more to come. I don't mean to intentionally be cryptic on the whole thing, but we have a plan."
TKO's proposal to start a boxing league would completely shake up the whole landscape of the sport. Professional boxers currently compete for world honours in the four major sanctioning bodies, the World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
More lightly regarded titles around the world can be won under the banner of organisations such as the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and the European Boxing Union (EBU).

But with the financial might of Al-Sheikh - who has brought mega stars including Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury and Terence Crawford out to fight in the Middle East - TKO are now hoping to revolutionise the way the game is run.
However, last month WBO president Mauricio Sulaiman claimed he was not concerned about TKO's potential takoever and insists that added competition can only be good for boxing.
He told ESPN: "I have absolutely no concern or no negative views whatsoever [of TKO boxing].

"I think anything that comes into boxing is sensational. ... [Regarding a campaign],
I know a lot of people started speculating and finding conspiracy theories or whatever, but absolutely not.
"I think the WBC should make its position public, which is [TKO boxing] is a good opportunity because we have always supported any movement, any company, any tournaments that have been put together.

"I truly believe that with the multibillion joint venture that is supposed to be TKO and UFC and WWE and what His Excellency has done in just under two years, it should be a great thing for the sport."
Dana White has also recently told the same publication that he wants to see professional boxing recognise a single world champion in each weight class, much like the UFC.

"It's all going to go away," he stated. "There's going to be one belt. ... It'll be like the UFC.
"The model is the model that we have [in UFC]. ... WBC, IBF, WBA, etc., etc. They will deal with those traditional promoters that are out there that exist right now. We're not going to do that.
"We're going to have the basic weight classes that started everything. We will have one champion.
"And you know how you're going to know who the champion is because they're going to fight their way up through the gauntlet. And once you get into the top five, you know who the five baddest dudes in the heavyweight division are.
"And then you'll find out who the champion is. They will defend their titles and that's how it'll work."

Shocking moment NFL star George Kittle drop kicks rival during star-studded golf tournament

San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle is a big fan of wrestling, having been seen ringside at many WWE events in the past. However, at the celebrity-studded American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, Kittle was able to break out some of those wrestling moves he's seen - only this time, on a golf course. Kittle was partnered with WWE superstar The Miz for the unofficial tournament which has generated large crowds at the Edgewood Tahoe resort for years. On the tee at one of the holes, Kittle and Miz appeared to drum up a 'work' when the wrestler feigned annoyance with the NFL star and shoved him. Kittle backed up as the wrestler turned around to pump up the crowd, leading the Niner to crouch down. As Miz turned around, Kittle wound up and 'kicked' him in the face - emulating wrestling icon Shawn Michaels' signature finisher, the 'Sweet Chin Music'. George Kittle hits the SWEET CHIN MUSIC on the Miz! — NBC Sports (@NBCSports) July 13, 2025 San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle busted out some wrestling moves on the golf course The gallery laughed as Kittle patted Miz on the torso before doing a celebratory dance. Kittle has let his love of the sport be well known, especially after cameras caught him at Wrestlemania many times in the past. He even got in the ring at Wrestlemania 39 in Los Angeles. The Niners superstar has hinted that he'd consider a career in sports entertainment after he's done with football. 'I would love to do WWE,' Kittle said on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. 'I think there's definitely opportunity within that world, and I would love nothing more than to be a part of it.' 'My only question mark with that is I so much love being a fan of WWE. I would only do WWE if I bought a ring and practiced my ass off for a while so I wouldn't look like an idiot out there,' Kittle said. 'I've been in a WWE ring like three times. I don't know what I'm doing out there. I have an understanding of how it works, but I haven't moonsaulted off the top rope at WrestleMania like Pat McAfee did. Like what Logan Paul does.'

Marcus Rashford rejects £35m transfer offer to leave Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has rejected a £35m transfer offer to leave Manchester United but is still planning to leave Old Trafford this summer. Rashford, 27, has made over 400 appearances for his boyhood club but knows he does not have a future at United while Ruben Amorim is in charge. Amorim was critical of Rashford's output in training last season before the former Sporting Lisbon boss sanctioned his loan move to Aston Villa in January. Rashford is one of a number of players Amorim wants to sell this summer to trim his squad and raised funds for his transfer kitty. But there is also a desire from Rashford to move on following more than a decade in the Manchester United first team as the stagnating forward believes he would benefit from a summer switch. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. A permanent move to Aston Villa was initially raised as a possibility but Unai Emery was forced to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements after it emerged Rashford was prioritising a move to Barcelona. Rashford is still keen to join the La Liga champions, who are expected to sign a new winger for Hansi Flick before the summer transfer deadline. Barcelona are known admirers of Rashford and could revive their interest in the England international after missing out on first-choice target Nico Williams. Williams appeared to be edging towards a move to the Nou Camp only to sign a new 10-year contract with Athletic Bilbao with a £78m release clause. Barcelona have also expressed interest in Liverpool's Luis Diaz but continue to be reminded by Rashford's representatives that he is still keen on the move. Rashford views Barcelona as his dream destination and as a result has rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, according to Mundo Deportivo. It is claimed an unnamed Saudi club offered Rashford a contract worth 40m euros (£35m) but were knocked back by the Manchester United outcast. The Spanish outlet say Rashford could be offered another option to leave United with Serie A giants Juventus now expressing interest in a deal. A more unlikely outcome would see Rashford and Amorim repair their relationship and former Manchester United star Juan Mata hopes that can still be the case. More Trending 'I saw his first training with us. I love him. As a kid, I called him 'the wonderkid',' Mata told The Athletic. 'The way he played was fearless, you could feel he could win a game by himself at any time when he was playing at his best. 'As a Man United fan and as a friend of Marcus, I wish that he can succeed here because it's his club, his boyhood club. 'I don't know what's going to happen but if he stays and he can actually be happy and enjoy, I think it will be a win-win situation for both the club and him.'
