Ohio State basketball drops tough contest to Michigan at home

Yahoo16-02-2025
The Ohio State basketball team is in an extremely important stretch of its schedule with the season winding down. A loss or win here or there could mean the difference between remaining squarely on the bubble, and getting off it and away from the slippery slope it has seemingly lived on through the last few years.
Enter in the game against arch-rival Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines were in great position as the No. 20 ranked team in the country sitting on top of the Big Ten standings coming into the contest at the Schott. A win would have been huge, but that didn't quite happen despite a great effort against a varied and well-coached Wolverines squad.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout, and Ohio State had plenty of chances to knock off Michigan, it just didn't make enough plays down the stretch to get it done, losing a hard-fought battle 86-83 in front of a sell-out crowd in Value City Arena. The game was decided when Bruce Thornton had a shot to tie it in the lane but came up well short with a subsequent foul on the Wolverines with 0.2 seconds left.
The game was more or less lost on the boards. Michigan, with its size and effort, controlled the paint, winning the rebounding battle by a 45-29 margin, resulting in extra possessions for the Maize and Blue. Ohio State had a decisive advantage at the free throw line but failed to take advantage, making just 18-of-27 from the line to Michigan's 14-of-17. That all spelled doom in a game this close.
Devin Royal led the Buckeyes in scoring with 26 points on 10-of-16 from the field. Thornton (17) and John Mobley Jr. (16) were the only other OSU players in double figures.

The loss puts Ohio State in a more precarious position when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes' overall record now falls to 15-11, and the conference record moves to 7-8. It was clearly and opportunity lost and now there is some significant work to do.
The Buckeyes will next be in action on Thursday, as they host Northwestern at home.

Notre Dame, USC on another top rivalry list

Another publication has ranked the best college football rivalries of all time, and once again, Notre Dame-USC makes the list. This list, unlike one from a few weeks ago, is only 10 deep, so there was only room for one Notre Dame rivalry. Sorry, Michigan. The others on the list, which comes from Fox Sports, will not shock anyone. Number one is Michigan-Ohio State, number two is Alabama-Auburn and Oklahoma-Texas is number three. Army-Navy is fourth, with Notre Dame-USC rounding out the top five. The rest of the top 10: Florida State-Miami (FL), Florida-Georgia, BYU-Utah, Texas-Texas A&M and Mississippi State-Ole Miss. Iowa basketball recruiting target seemingly trending in different direction

Iowa basketball has been on a recruiting tear recently. But you can't win them all. Ben McCollum has already had a huge impact on the way the Hawkeyes recruit top talent, whether through the transfer portal or traditional recruiting. From bringing in Bennett Stirtz and Brendan Hausen via the portal or getting four-star prospect Trey Thompson to commit and re-classify, McCollum has been able to bring top talent to Iowa City consistently. But in recruiting, sometimes you don't win the battle. And after some recent comments from a top target in the 2026 class, it seems Iowa may be falling behind other schools to land the talents of Quinn Costello. Costello is a four-star power forward prospect from Boston, Massachusetts, in the class of 2026. The 6-foot-10, 195-pound forward is currently the 72nd best prospect in the entire class according to 247Sports and has offers from Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, and Syracuse, among others. After strong showings on the summer circuits, he's seen his ranking rise from an unranked prospect to a top 75 player in the class. Costello recently opened up to 247Sports about his recruitment and his failure to mention Iowa could be pretty telling on the Hawkeyes' standing in his recruitment. "Everyone is recruiting me hard," Costello said. "But I've heard from new schools like Florida State and Villanova , and then there are the ones who've been showing up for me the most like Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, and other schools." While Iowa is still in the mix for Costello, it's not a great sign that he didn't mention them as one of the teams recruiting him hard and he hasn't scheduled a visit to Iowa City yet. While those signs aren't great for the Hawkeyes, you'd be a fool to count McCollum out of a recruiting battle. McCollum has shown that he can bring top-tier talent to Iowa, and he'll look to do it again with Costello. Until then, the focus is all on 2025 and seeing if Iowa can finally make a run in March. Ohio State Star Jeremiah Smith Reveals Just How Close He Was To Joining Miami Hurricanes

Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith revealed this week just how close he was to taking his talents to the Miami Hurricanes two years ago. Jeremiah Smith took college football by storm in 2024 as a true freshman for the Buckeyes. In his first season in the Big Ten, the wide receiver led the team not just in yards (1,315) but also touchdowns (15) on just 76 catches. Ohio State does not win a National Championship last season without the young star. However, things could have been different. Although OSU was a favorite to land him in 2023, the Hurricanes were reportedly a serious contender to win his recruiting sweepstakes. On Tuesday, Smith revealed to On3 just how close he got to taking his talents to Miami two years ago. Jeremiah Smith stats: 76 catches, 1,315 receiving yards, 15 touchdowns, 17.3 yards per catch 'What went into me taking a long time to send my NIL was people on the business side of things. That night [that he sent his paperwork in], I definitely talked to Cam Ward. Thought about something… I didn't really tell him [that he was choosing OSU]. We just got on the phone, and he was like, 'What you gonna do?' And I was like, 'I don't know.' Then, a couple of hours later, I sent the NIL in.' Jeremiah Smith NIL value: $4.2 million Smith admits he has not talked to Ward since he made his decision. However, he does not believe the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and new Tennessee Titans QB holds any grudges. The Hurricanes had an outstanding offense in 2024 and posted a 10-3 record. Many in Miami believe that if Smith had committed to the program, they would have reached the college football playoffs and had a chance to compete for a National title. Ohio State fans are very happy he did not choose South Beach over Columbus.
