Michigan football's 2026 recruiting class soars to top 12 with 5 commits this week

It wasn't that long ago that Michigan football fans were lamenting the fact that you almost had to click 'read more' in order to see where the Wolverines were ranked in the 2026 recruiting team rankings. Even in the month of May, there was a local outcry as the maize and blue had just a handful of commits, seemingly languishing behind a series of also-rans. Oh, how things change. Perhaps patience was in order? Advertisement Now here we are, a month later, and fans are celebrating what's turning out to be one of the best classes in the country. The Wolverines got two commitments on Friday, about 15 minutes apart (if that), when Richmond (Va.) Huguenot three-star linebacker Markel Dabney and Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee both pledged to the class. That's adding on to commitments this week from St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet four-star defensive tackle Titan Davis, Mansfield (Tx.) four-star wide receiver Zion Robinson, and Needham (Mass.) St. Sebastian's four-star offensive tackle Marky Walbridge. Oh, and there are still two or three outstanding commits who have told Sherrone Moore and the program, but haven't announced yet publicly. So, where does Michigan rank now that it's added five commitments in five days? Here's a look at the different recruiting services: Advertisement 247Sports team rankings: No. 11 overall, 0 five-stars, 9 four-stars, 6 three-stars, average rating (90.77), overall rating (229.93) On3 team rankings: No. 11 overall, 0 five-stars, 9 four-stars, 6 three-stars, average rating (88.58), score (90.010) Rivals team rankings: No. 12 overall, 1 five-star, 9 four-stars, 4 three-stars, points (1762) We'll have to wait about a month to see where ESPN ranks the maize and blue. With the new rankings update, Michigan has surpassed teams such as Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and LSU (via all the rankings services). Whereas, beforehand, the Wolverines were behind all of them. There are still several top targets that are trending toward the maize and blue who decide soon, such as Richmond (Va.) Hermitage four-star CB Andre Clarke, Frisco (Tx.) Panther Creek four-star S Donovan Webb, Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star WR Travis Johnson, Fort Worth (Tx.) North Crowley four-star IOL John Turntine III, Miami (Fla.) Northwestern five-star WR Calvin Russell, and Carrollton (Ga.) four-star CB Dorian Barney -- most of whom have at least one prediction that they'll end up in a winged helmet come decision day. Michigan football EA Sports College Football 26 game ranking revealed

Now in its second year, the EA Sports College Football franchise is a good way to get at least a basic, cursory idea of how each college team will be in the season. Or at least how prognosticators feel about the field. Michigan football will likely have a punishing defense but is revamping the offense -- and there's no telling just how quickly the Wolverines will be able to put together a unit that's significantly more functional than what we saw on the field in 2024. Still, EA Sports has a lot of faith that the maize and blue will be significantly improved compared to last year, with Michigan being ranked at No. 15 overall in the soon-to-be-released EA Sports College Football 26 video game. The rankings for the top 25 teams were revealed on Friday. Via On3: In the actual season, Michigan football plays just two of the listed ranked teams -- No. 17 Oklahoma in Week 2 and No. 3 Ohio State in Week 14. Of course, this is just a barometer for the season, or, if you're playing the video game, shows you the strength of the team if you choose to play as the Wolverines. The new EA Sports College Football 26 game is set to be released on July 10, with the deluxe edition getting a three-day early digital release on July 7.

Michigan basketball star C Vladislav Goldin goes undrafted, signs with Miami Heat

Of the Michigan basketball contingent, the first went off the board in the NBA draft on Wednesday evening, with center Danny Wolf being selected by the Brooklyn Nets with the No. 27 overall pick. Now it's time for his frontcourt compatriot to see his NBA dreams come true. The Wolverines likely would not have been a Sweet 16 team had center Vladislav Goldin not followed head coach Dusty May from Boca Raton to Ann Arbor. But after averaging 16.6 points per game, seven rebounds, and 1.1 assists, Goldin was the primary scoring option for the maize and blue in 2024-25. Goldin didn't end up getting selected in the 2025 NBA draft but he ended up getting picked up by the Miami Heat on a two-way contract, bringing him back to South Florida. Here's Yahoo Sports' NBA scouting report on Goldin: STRENGTHS Shooting upside: Goldin began shooting 3s as a senior, and though he made only 11 of his 33 attempts, it's an encouraging sign for his long-term potential. In college, he made 52.8% of his 299 hook shots and runners, a sign of solid touch. As a junior, he made 66.3% of his free throws, then went up to 73.1% as a senior. With a nice, relaxed shot release there's plenty of reason to believe it will be a reliable shot for him. At-rim finishing: Efficient scorer around the rim with a variety of post moves and toughness and feel for scoring against contact at the rim off of a roll. Motor: Goldin plays hard and with emotion. If he's able to improve his quickness he could end up a solid interior defender and rebounder. CONCERNS Perimeter defense: May struggle to guard stretch bigs, hedge in pick-and-rolls, or switch onto smaller players. Athleticism: Not the most agile in small spaces and the open floor, which could be exploited in fast-paced games. Passing: Goldin logged 95 assists to 236 turnovers in college, and didn't display much feel for making his teammates better with the pass. With Wolf and Goldin both off to the NBA, the Wolverines will likely use a rotation of transfers Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara, with Mara being more in the Goldin-type role when both are on the court at the same time.

Michigan football 2026 recruiting class climbs to No. 17 in ESPN rankings with key commits

Michigan football has been on an incredible hot streak in the month of June, building out its 2026 recruiting class, with several top prospects committing to the Wolverines with plenty more to come. Many (both fans and media) were questioning whether or not the maize and blue were going to put together a top class as they had last year, forgetting that Michigan tends to fill out the list of committed prospects after official visit season. But even with many of the Wolverines' top overall targets still on the board, ESPN has taken notice of what Michigan has done. Last time ESPN updated its 2026 recruiting rankings, the maize and blue were ranked No. 22. Now they're up five spots to No. 17. 17. Michigan Wolverines Previous ranking: 22 ESPN 300 commits: 6Top offensive prospect: QB Brady SmigielTop defensive prospect: DE Titan Davis The Wolverines signed the No. 1 QB for the 2025 cycle in Bryce Underwood and he carries high expectations, but they continue to add talent to the position and landed ESPN 300 signal-caller Brady Smigiel. The onetime Florida State commit is not only an accurate passer, but he also plays with the confidence and swagger that will be needed battling with five-star Underwood. After losing two DLs in the first round of the NFL draft, Michigan added several DLs to this class, including ESPN 300 DEs Titan Davis and McHale Blade. Four-star DE Tariq Boney is a player to keep an eye on. He lacks ideal length but can be a well-rounded technician and a quick contributor. After scoring from off the beaten path with former standout TE Colston Loveland (Idaho), the Wolverines hope to strike big again from that same region with Matt Ludwig out of Montana. He is a versatile player with good ball skills who can be tough after the catch and fights for yards. Something (logic?) tells us that it will be much higher next month when ESPN updates the list again. The aforementioned Brady Smigiel is the highest-rated recruit the Wolverines have via ESPN, at No. 44 overall. Newly-committed wide receiver Zion Robinson is next at No. 116. Here are the Michigan football commits who are ranked in the ESPN300: 44. Newbury Park (Calif.) four-star QB Brady Smigiel 116. Mansfield (Tx.) four-star WR Zion Robinson 164. St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet four-star DT Titan Davis 193. Cartersville (Ga.) Cass four-star IOL Bear McWhorter 270. Billings (Mont.) West four-star TE Matt Ludwig 273. Chicago (Ill.) Simeon four-star EDGE McHale Blade According to ESPN, the Wolverines have eight four-stars committed, five three-stars, and one unranked (kicker commit Micah Drescher).
