The Mitchells Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) has issued an urgent call for a commission of inquiry into gang-related violence, following a deadly shooting in Tafelsig that claimed the lives of two teenagers and left another critically wounded.
The mass shooting took place on Tuesday night, May 6, at the corner of Platteklip Street and Cable Way, Tafelsig. According to police reports, the victims—two males aged 18 and 19—were gunned down while standing in the road. A third male was seriously injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police say a Toyota Etios drove past the group and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The attack is believed to be gang-related.
As residents of Mitchells Plain reel from yet another violent incident, the CPF's call for structural interventions, accountability, and community mobilisation underscores the urgency of addressing the deep-rooted causes of gang violence.
Chairperson of the Mitchells Plain CPF, Norman Jantjies, said the community is under siege and the violence is affecting households across the suburb.
He has called for urgent collaboration between law enforcement agencies and residents to tackle the spiralling crisis.
'We as the CPF are very concerned because these shootings and killings are going on unabated, and it looks like it is the whole of Mitchells Plain that is affected,' said Jantjies.
'We feel more needs to be done by the law enforcement agencies. We need increased visibility and profiling of all the gangsters and make sure that we have the number plate detection and cameras. We note that most shooters drive to their targets.'
Jantjies lamented the community's reluctance to come forward as witnesses, citing fear and intimidation. He argued that surveillance technology, such as license plate recognition and street cameras, could help close the information gap and assist police in identifying suspects.
'We have a problem with people refusing to be witnesses. We need cameras to assist us in identifying the perpetrators,' he said.

The CPF is also developing a long-term anti-gang strategy with stakeholders across sectors.
Jantjies emphasised that this issue must transcend political divisions and be approached as a collective community crisis.
'We are saying that the Mitchells Plain community is developing a gang strategy, we want everybody to come on board. We should not look into this politically—everybody must sit down at the table, this is not just going to go away,' he said.
'This impacts every household in Mitchells Plain. We repeat our call that we need a commission of inquiry to look into this ongoing gang violence that we are faced with. It goes right from prevention and detection to prosecution.'
The CPF chair also expressed frustration over a pattern of cases being withdrawn in court, allowing perpetrators to escape justice.
'We have another problem of cases being withdrawn at court, and this means that people are getting away with murder,' Jantjies said.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the details of Tuesday's shooting and said investigations are under way.
'The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Tuesday night, 6 May 2025, on the corner of Platteklip Street and Cable Way, Tafelsig, Mitchell's Plain, where two males aged 18 and 19 were shot and fatally wounded and another male shot and wounded, are under investigation,' Twigg said.

Four gunmen sought after a public prosecutor gunned down in Gqeberha

A public prosecutor was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon Image: SAPS Police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt for four suspects who shot and killed a prosecutor on Thursday afternoon. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was gunned down in broad daylight in Algoa Park in Gqeberha at about 3.30 pm. Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said the prosecutor was shot just outside her home. 'A female public prosecutor arrived home in Lotton Street, Young Park. While still seated in her vehicle, a Toyota Etios, four unknown suspects wearing masks stopped with a white VW Polo in the street, they got out of the vehicle, and multiple shots were fired at her vehicle,' Janse Van Rensburg said. Brown was rushed to the hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. She was declared dead on arrival. 'The motive and the suspects are unknown, and the investigation is ongoing,' Janse van Rensburg said. National spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga, has condemned the brutal murder. 'Tracy Brown was shot assassination-style by four armed men in front of her house in Gqeberha, in the presence of her partner and minor child. The motive for Ms Brown's senseless killing is unknown. Her murder is an attack on the rule of law and our tireless efforts to hold criminals accountable. "The NPA, together with law enforcement, will spare no effort in ensuring that the perpetrators of this brutal murder are brought to justice,' Mhaga said. He said the recent killings of prosecutors who put their lives on the line every day in the pursuit of justice is deeply disturbing. This murder follows the killing of another prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, from the Engcobo Magistrates Court in April this year. 'Our prosecutors take on their duties with courage and a deep commitment to serving the people, often at great personal risk. To target those who dedicate their lives to upholding the law is to strike at the heart of our constitutional democracy. 'We will not be deterred in our resolve to deliver on our mandate to ensure justice for the people of our country. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Ms Brown's family, friends, and colleagues at this sad and difficult time,' Mhaga said. Police have urged anyone with information that can assist the investigation to the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Errol Kleinhans at 083 243 4567, or Crime Stop at 08600 1011 or the nearest police station. Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via MySAPS App. All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous. IOL

Gqeberha prosecutor fatally shot, justice minister wants court officials protected

Regional court prosecutor Tracy Brown, who was attached to the New Brighton court in Gqeberha, was fatally shot on arrival at her home on Thursday afternoon. The motive for the killing is yet to be confirmed and justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has urged anyone with information to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities in their investigation. Another Eastern Cape prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, aged 30, was shot dead near his Mthatha home on April 29. The minister said she is "deeply disturbed that such acts of violence continue to claim the lives of officers of the court". While the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has security and employee assistance measures in place for prosecutors, Kubayi said there is a need to review and strengthen the measures. The existing policy on prosecutor safety provides for employee assistance and close protection. but Kubayi said recent events highlight concerning gaps in implementation. "Thee protections must be reinforced and better coordinated with other security cluster stakeholders to ensure our prosecutors can carry out their duties without fear for their lives. "Government remains committed to ensuring those who serve the justice system are protected and acts of violence against them are met with the full might of the law." Police spokesperson Capt Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the prosecutor had arrived home in Young Park at about 3.30pm on Thursday. "While still seated in her vehicle a Toyota Etios, four unknown suspects wearing masks stopped with a white VW Polo in the street, they got out of the vehicle and multiple shots were fired at her vehicle. "The deceased was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds but passed away on her arrival. The motive and the suspects are unknown, and the investigation is ongoing."
