Francesco Farioli appointed Porto head coach
The 36-year-old has joined the Portuguese club less than two months after leaving Ajax, whom he coached for one season.
The Italian, who guided Ajax to a second-place finish and missed out on the Eredivisie title to PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the campaign, was the first non-Dutch coach at the Amsterdam club since Danish manager Morten Olsen left in 1998.
Farioli replaces Martin Anselmi at Porto; the Argentinian won just 10 of his 21 matches in charge, overseeing a third-place finish in Portugal's Primeira Liga and a group stage exit at this summer's Club World Cup.

Bem-vindo, Francesco Farioli 🤝 #SeguimosJuntos @france_fario

Porto endured a trophyless 2024-25 and have not won the Portuguese league title since 2022.
Farioli started his coaching career in Turkey and enjoyed a successful 2023-24 season in charge of French club Nice, where he helped guide the side to fifth in Ligue 1.
At Nice and Ajax, he primarily deployed a 4-3-3 formation, in which his side generally pressed high in a man-to-man system, with similarities to Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi's style of play.

Wissa leaves Brentford pre-season training camp
Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has left the team's pre-season base in Portugal amid growing uncertainty over his future. BBC Sport has learned the 28-year-old has returned to London from the Bees' training camp. Wissa will now hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles with a trio of Premier League clubs keen on him. Newcastle, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are among those with a firm interest in the DR Congo international. All three clubs can offer him European football next season and it is understood agreeing personal terms, particularly with either Tottenham or Newcastle - whose efforts to land Wissa have intensified in the last 48 hours - will not be an issue. Wissa is understood to have been unsettled by the speculation regarding his future in recent weeks. He is expected to join back up with the team upon their return to London if he continues to be a Brentford player. The outcome of the meeting is likely to be pivotal towards how Brentford approach resolving Wissa's future. Brentford recently tried to open negotiations with Wissa over a new contract, but he is understood to prefer a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium this summer. Wissa's Brentford team-mate Bryan Mbeumo is set to join Manchester United after the Bees accepted a £65m bid. Brentford initially had no intention of losing both Mbeumo and Wissa this summer. However, with Wissa turning 29 in September the scenario of a depreciating asset – who this summer could command a fee in the region of £40m, if not more - will likely be a consideration. That he has just 12 months left on his current deal, though there is an option to activate by a further year, is another factor to mull over. Wissa joined Brentford from from French club Lorient in August 2021 and has scored 49 goals in 149 games in all competitions for the Bees. He scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League games last season. Brentford face Portuguese Primeira Liga side Gil Vicente at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos in their first pre-season friendly on 25 July. Brentford turn down £25m Yoane Wissa offer from Newcastle
Brentford have turned down an offer from Newcastle United to sign Yoane Wissa. A proposal worth £25million was knocked back but the north east club's pursuit is ongoing, while personal terms would be no problem. Wissa has returned from Brentford's pre-season training camp in Portugal to hold face-to-face talks over his future with the Brentford hierarchy. Advertisement The Athletic reported on July 17 that Newcastle were exploring a deal to sign the 28-year-old after cooling their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, who is poised to join Liverpool. Nottingham Forest have also previously shown interest in signing Wissa. The Athletic reported on July 10 that Forest had seen a fresh bid for Wissa turned down by Brentford after their approach for the forward in January was also rejected. Brentford have valued Wissa at more than £50m, underlining his importance to them — which has only increased after Bryan Mbeumo joined Manchester United. Wissa joined Brentford from Lorient in August 2021 and has a year left on his contract, with Brentford holding an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months. He scored 19 Premier League goals last season, and any exit now would only add to a huge summer of change at Brentford. Thomas Frank, who brought Wissa to England, has since moved from Brentford to Tottenham Hotspur along with three members of his backroom staff. As well as Mbeumo's exit, captain Christian Norgaard has joined Arsenal. Keith Andrews, the former midfielder and previously the club's set-piece coach, was appointed as Frank's replacement last month.

Arsenal on verge of total agreement for Viktor Gyokeres transfer from Sporting CP
Arsenal and Sporting CP are on the verge of a total agreement for the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres. A deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m; $74.2m) plus €10m (£8.6m; $11.7m) of future bonuses had already been struck in principle. But issues remained over the nature and achievability of those contingency payments, which caused a delay in the proposed move being finalised. Advertisement Talks to resolve that are now at an extremely advanced stage, with a conclusion imminent. Only finishing touches and some minor tweaks are required before the switch can be completed. Gyokeres was focused only on joining Arsenal and, despite late interest from elsewhere, he did not consider any other team. The 27-year-old Sweden international's agent also waived his commission to help the switch, while a contract until June 2030 has been prepared. Frederico Varandas, the president of the Portuguese club, said on July 12 that Gyokeres would be issued a 'heavy fine' and told to apologise to his Sporting team-mates after the Swede missed the deadline to report for pre-season training amid Arsenal's approach. Gyokeres has been one of Europe's most in-demand strikers this summer after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season, and was identified as Arsenal's preferred centre-forward target. Arsenal were without a recognised No. 9 for much of 2024-25 following injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, as they finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive campaign, ten points behind champions Liverpool with 17 fewer goals scored. After leaving Brighton & Hove Albion for around £1m to Coventry City in 2021, Gyokeres emerged a key figure for the Championship side before his £17m move to Sporting in 2023. He recorded 97 goals and 28 assists for the Portuguese club, helping them to consecutive league titles and the Taca de Portugal last season. Arsenal have been active in their first summer transfer window led by new sporting director Andrea Berta. Midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard have joined from Real Sociedad and Brentford respectively, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke have arrived from Chelsea. Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera is set to join up with his new team-mates in Singapore after finalising his move from Spain. Gyokeres made his Sweden debut aged 20 and has played 26 games at international level, scoring 15 goals. Analysis by data writer Thom Harris There's quite an obvious appeal to Gyokeres when flicking through the numbers; his 68 league goals since joining Sporting two summers ago is well over double that of any other player in Portugal throughout that time, a brutal finisher, able to generate freakish power on either side. Advertisement But there's more to the Swede than just lasered shots and penalty-box poaching — Gyokeres is a prodigious runner, direct, explosive, and with the physical capacity to repeat those movements at high intensity. As we can see from his SkillCorner run profile below — comparing his off-ball work to strikers across Europe's top seven leagues — he's often targeting the space in-behind, or pulling wide to run the channels, happy to take a defender out wide before powering inside and getting his shot away. The Premier League, of course, is a different proposition, and while Gyokeres clearly has the physical capabilities to battle it out with the strongest of centre-backs, he may not be afforded quite as much space to attack for a side such as Arsenal, often pass-heavy and patient in their build-up. He also isn't prolific in the air, without a single headed goal in league football last season. But the Swede is a handful, a guaranteed goalscorer, a relentless runner, and a ruthless No. 9 who can turn half-chances into goals. If Premier League teams thought they had figured out Arteta's Arsenal, this signing would add a new dimension. (Top image: Pedro Loureiro/Eurasia)
